There will be extra cover for the Lions’ forwards when they take on the Sharks in Johannesburg on Saturday, coach John Mitchell revealed on Wednesday.

SAPA reports that the Currie Cup log leaders included five forwards and two backline specialists in their list of replacements for the match with most of the focus expected to be on centre Doppies La Grange.

La Grange returns after a prolonged hamstring injury which he picked up during the team’s second round victory against Griquas.

Lock Wikus van Heerden is also back in the team after he withdrew from their previous match against Western Province at the last minute.

Lions: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Josh Strauss (captain), 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.

Substitutes: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse, 18 Johan Snyman, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Warren Whiteley, 21 Doppies La Grange, 22 Burton Francis

  • How fitting that the game before the halfway mark is a top of the table clash.

Sharks to win this by a good margin

  • Guess it`s way too early for me to expect a sharks team?

    Possible Option :
Stefan, Richards, Ludik, Adi, Mvovo, Michalak, Charl, Kanko, Coetzee, Hargreaves, Bresler, Botes, Herbst, Burden, Van Staden.

  • This is a good Lions side so it is going to be a tough one in JHB – just like the S15 earlier this year or the Currie Cup game there last year.

  • @steve (Comment 6) : it’s building up to be a close one. I think if Freddy is on song again, it will go our way.

  • @war1 (Comment 9) : he’s ok, I think… can’t recall us having too many issues with him in the past?

All I want is a ref who will recognise which side is dominating the scrums…

  • we could have our hands full with the combo of Snyman, Rhodes and Whiteley on the bench… three big lads who’ll look to turn the forward tide in their side’s favour in the second half… assuming it isn’t already going that way.

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : The extra l/fwd and no scrumhalf on the bench. 😕 It will be interesting to see Doppies back in his old halfback position unless they see Killian filling the role as backup at no.9

  • @beet (Comment 14) : we’ll also have 5 forwards on the bench, but one of them will be Botes, who’s just a bit smaller than any of the Lions boys 🙂

  • @beet (Comment 14) : no, Doppies will be backup at 9… maybe a few early, hard hits on Bondesio wouldn’t be a bad idea?

  • @beet (Comment 8) : Re U21’s – dont know as yet – Should be much the same as the side that started against WP – they went quite well up front against WP with a few 1st choice guys out or injured early on so it will be interesting to see if they change anything. I know there are quite a few niggles and a bit of flu about that will also influence the 22 for Saturday.
