Jacobs in line for rare start

Sharks coach John Plumtree confirmed this morning that Stefan Terblanche will miss this weekend’s trip to Johannesburg, following the birth of his son earlier in the week.

Given that the coach has already indicated that Marius Joubert will be dropped to focus on his conditioning, the chances are good that Adrian Jacobs will enjoy a rare start in the number 13 jersey this weekend. The combination of Jacobs at Meyer Bosman is one that Sharks fans heave been keen to see in action for a number of months now, with some feeling that Jacobs might just be the best guy to capitalise on the work that Bosman does in crossing the advantage line.

The side will be announced later today and is expected to contain both Lwazi Mvovo and Jean Deysel, although the latter will play off the bench. Both players were unlucky to miss out on selection for the Springbok World Cup squad on Tuesday.

  • Well Mr. Plummo, little bit to late now, non-existant player management of a contracted Bok surely costing him a once in a lifetime oppertunity of playing in the WC, well that’s now water under the bridge, can say with surety that this loyal talented player will still do his bit as gamebreaker for the Sharks after this dissapointing chapter…GO ADI !!!

  • @Charlie (Comment 3) : Charlie, I doubt if Adi would have been chosen ahead of the “wonderful two” anyway – and the other person who covers on centre directly is Juan de Jongh (Butch as well, but he can cover on FH too which gives him some advantage in being selected)…Frans Steyn can also do it, so can Lambie and they cover more than one poistion. So that alone makes me doubt that he would have gone. I still feel for him though!

  • Plumtree must have fallen on his head. A wise midfield selection? At the Sharks? And Adi isn’t even 35 yet…

  • @Big Fish (Comment 13) : let’s wait and see… the decision to give Stef the week off might mean Plum decides to postpone Marius’s conditioning break.

  • @Ice (Comment 10) : As The Sharks labelled Jacobs, and many do also, as the ultimate impact player it might just be what the Boks would have need, if 5 points are on the cards, I just hope that I can control myself to zip it if such a situation occured (touch wood 😉 ) as I am still backing The Boks 100% to take the WC !!!

  • An open letter to John Plumtree:

    Dear coach

While I do not have a mandate to speak on behalf of all of the readership of Sharksworld, my exaggerated sense of self-worth has caused me to volunteer my services as emmisary from the blogosphere. So here’s what we (and by “we” I mean “I”) would like to request:

    1) Please afford Adi Jacobs an extended opportunity in his best position (13) to show you, and us the fans his worth. I am not sure if you are familiar with the business term “sweating your assets”, but to have a contracted Shark and Bok, whose salary is surely not inconsequential, sitting on the sidelines makes no sense.

    2) Meyer Bosman has been largely disappointing, but has shown some tantalising glimpses of potential. Please overcome your aversion to specialists, and make an appointment for Meyer with with Dr. Calder. Just see what it’s done for Bryan Banana, who most of us thought was beyond hope. After that, send him to Henry Honibal, Pieter Muller, Pokkel (when he is inebriated), or someone else versed in the arts of the tackle. Bosman is a big boy, there’s no reason why he should not be able to master defense. If it means that in order to accomplish the above you have to play Jean Deysel at 12 while Bosman is on hiatus, and it costs us all our games, so be it. Focus on the Super 15.

    3) I know the Sharks have made some costly signings, and I am not sure what role you played in them, but please don’t feel compelled to use players who are not up to scratch just because they costs you a packet. Sometimes it’s necessary to say “I was wrong”, and a golden handshake, though costly in the short term is better that protracted sub-par performances.

    4) Do not be scared to give young players a shot. Surely you have been presented with enough case studies to show that it can work? And even if it doesn’t, we the fans will applaud you for your bravery, and will not hold any losses incurred against you.

    Thanks for listening

    Yours sincerely
    CS
