The Lions have confirmed that captain Josh Strauss has been withdrawn for this evening’s match against the Sharks, having failed to recover sufficiently form a rib injury sustained against Western Province.

Strauss’s place at the back of the scrum will go to former Sharks Vodacom Cup eighthman, Warren Whiteley, with young flanker Jaco Kriel coming into the 22 as replacement. Former captain Cobus “Baywatch” Grobbelaar will now captain the side from the number 6 jersey.

Lions: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Cobus Grobbelaar (capt), 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Replacements: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse, 18 Johan Snyman, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Jaco Kriel, 21 Doppies La Grange, 22 Burton Francis.

  • Lions can still do this Warren is a strong defender and Kriel on the bench I rate higher that Grobelaar, it will be close but I think in the end it will come down to the flyhalf that will dictate the game the best

  • I see this withdrawal as a massive boost for the Sharks.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 6) : Not sure it was really a late change as such, chances were always that he wasn’t playing. Lions will miss him though, could well swing the game the sharks way 🙁

  • @Greg (Comment 7) : Also the headline here is a bit misleading, Josh not skipper, Doppies is, he is in fact back, albeit on the bench. Josh was stand-in captain while Doppies was injured.
