Marais in line for start?

It’s always somewhat dodgy to draw conclusions from a photograph, but if one or two of the snaps I’ve seen of the Sharks training session yesterday have any relevance, then John Plumtree might be looking to freshen up his second row ahead of Saturday’s must-win clash against the Blue Bulls.

Jandre Marais looks likely to get a start in the number 4 jersey this week, replacing Anton Bresler, while Ross Skeate should continue alongside him. Other changes up-front might see Eugene van Staden come in at tighthead prop for Wiehahn Herbst as well. With Alistair Hargreaves back in the frame too, there could be an almighty scrap between him and Bresler for the number 18 shirt, although the loss of a loose forward from the squad (Ryan Kankowski has injured his hand) might see both included if the Sharks again opt for five forwards on the bench.

The composition of the loose trio is still a mystery at this stage, though, after Kankowski’s withdrawal. Keegan Daniel and Marcell Coetzee are both quite comfortable at number 8, while we shouldn’t forget that Jacques Botes and even Jean Deysel have also spent time in the position earlier in their careers. With Daniel the captain, he’s probably the only one who can be assured a place in the run-on side, although his twin Deysel must surely be a starter this week too after a superb cameo against the Lions.

Some will argue, though, that shuffling the forwards while the backs remain largely impotent on attack is an exercise in real futility. We expect the line-up to be confirmed tomorrow.

  • I don’t think we can read into team selections by looking at how one scrum in practise lined up. Unless you know anything else . . .

Rough guess here. About 1.98m, 115kg or so?

He deserves a start. Sharks need to build up that depth ahead of S15.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 11) : As far as I can see, he is competing with Bresler for the four jersey with Skeate and Hargreaves fighting it out for the five jersey.
