The Sharks recorded their third win of the season over the Bulls (and the second in succession at Loftus) when they prevailed by 39 points to 27 on Saturday afternoon. Let’s have a look at how the individuals did.

1) Dale Chadwick. An early penalty for obstructions was about the only blot on his copybook on a day when he destroyed first the highly-rated Bok Werner Kruger and later Rossouw de Klerk in the scrums. Great work on defence as well. 8/10
2) Craig Burden. Starting to get back to his fiery best – and the try he scored was simply sublime. Some early lineout woes reduce his score by a point. 7/10
3) Eugene van Staden. Not quite the destructive scrummaging performance we were looking for from Eugene and he was quiet in general play too. 6/10
4) Jandre Marais. Very good execution of the basics and put in some great tackles, but needs to adjust to the pace of a game like this a little better. He’s very young still, and performed credibly in only his second start. 6/10
5) Ross Skeate. A truly monstrous game from a man who is shaping up to be the Sharks’ best tight forward of the campaign. Keep it up, Skeato! 8/10
6) Keegan Daniel. A good game from the skipper, who was all over the field, putting in huge tackles and generally playing the linking role. Still a better 8 than a 6, but still performed well. 7/10
7) Marcell Coetzee. An uncharacteristically quiet game from the youngster, who’s frankly starting to look a tad overplayed. He’s carried a huge workload in the first 8 rounds and probably needs a little wise management now. 6/10
8) Jean Deysel. A difficult encounter for the big Bok, since he hasn’t played in the number 8 jersey for quite some time. He was superb on defence, but could perhaps have offered more variation on attack. 7/10

9) Charl McLeod. Only lasted 24 minutes before going off with an AC joint injury, which is a real pity, because he was looking back to his absolute best. Quick, pinpoint service was the order of the day and enabled the Sharks to play with pace and width. 8/10
10) Fred Michalak. A really good outing, marked by superb options-taking and absolutely wonderful kicking at posts. A real boon to the Sharks this season – and doesn’t he just love playing at Loftus. 8/10
11) Lwazi Mvovo. Despite a good try, the old demon of low work rate was again evident, with Lwazi needing to find more to do as the team’s main strike runner. Dropped a pretty regulation pass too with the fourth try looming. 6/10
12) Meyer Bosman. Superb outing, with the spilled ball that led to Bjorn Basson’s first try the only howler. Kicked well at posts, which seemed to give him confidence, tackled like a machine and seemed far more incisive (and decisive) on attack. Keep it up, Meyer! 9/10
13) Stefan Terblanche. A very solid outing, with Stef showing some real verve on attack and some nice touches in distribution. 7/10
14) Sibusiso Sithole. Great game from the youngster, who showed the best of both his attacking and defensive qualities. Could also look for more work, but looks a real prospect for the future. 8/10
15) Louis Ludik. Another solid outing from a man who is just getting better and better. Starting to become a real threat on attack again and the only slight criticism is that he could look to link with his fellow outside backs a little more on the counter. 8/10

16) Kyle Cooper. Just another 7 minutes for the man whose frustration levels must surely be starting to mount. We can’t rate him on that and neither can the Sharks coaches.
17) Wiehahn Herbst. A great cameo by Worsie, who put in huge tackles and applied real pressure on Greyling in the scrums for the first time in the match. 7/10
18) Anton Bresler. A very good showing in the half-hour he was on. Some big hits and a few nice runs with the ball, in addition to the typical donkey-work in the tight. 7/10
19) Alistair Hargreaves. Was very busy on the field, but looked a little rusty. Will need to up his game to lift Skeate from the starting lineup. 6/10
20) Jacques Botes. Beavered away, industriously at the breakdowns and on defence, but we saw little of him on attack. 6/10
21) Conrad Hoffmann. Coming back into his own after a long injury lay-off. Service wasn’t quite as slick as McLeod’s, but he did his reputation no harm with this performance. 7/10
22) Adrian Jacobs. Only got 7 minutes at the end, which wasn’t enough. He love scoring tries at Loftus, so we should have unleashed him earlier.

  • I want to congratulate Meyer Bosman as well. His best outing all year.

Maybe we should keep him around for less challenging matches after all . .

  • Bosman had an absolute blinder. At one stage I stopped drinking just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. I thought Deysel also had a solid game at 8. Overall a good team effort by all the players.

But sometimes I want to pull my hair out. With the bonus point try a possiblity, we got a turnover ball about halfway between their 22 and the 10m line. I can’t remember who it was (either Stefan or Freddy), but he went for a drop when he had 5 on 3 numbers to his right.

Lack of bonus points have plagued Sharks rugby for a while now and nothing has changed.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 2) : It was Stefan – we had penalty advantage at that stage – and I think he just wanted to ensure that we get 3 extra points – hence ‘waisting”the ball to get the penalty kick.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 2) : you’re right, actually… it was silly. Knowing we had the penalty coming, we should have tried something more adventurous.

  • Its really pleasing to see that the young front row is doing the thing at scrum time and in general play, it bodes really well for next years Super 15.

Im also very chuffed with Ross Skeates dedication, very consistant and he gives it his all.

  • There is a typo under the Ross Skeate paragraph. Should read 9 out of 10. How much better can the man play!?

  • I would also like to give the backline coaching staff a thumbs up. The Sithole try from FIRST phase was great. It was the first time in a long time that I remember the Sharks having a successful backline set move.

Now that wasn’t so difficult now was it! More of the same please.

  • I thought the Sharks did well but decision making at times was still of school boy stuff! Yes sum silly decisions probably resulted in the Sharks not getting 4 tries, but the worst decision has to be in the last 5min that gave the Bulls the chance for a bonus point! Scrum or 22m drop out and we take the scrum?? Really? With the way scrums are being reffed these days? That made no sense at all and the Bulls scored from the turnover and then came back and got the 4th try! Hope decisions like that dont cost the Sharks in the end!

  • Pretty acurate summary. Thought Stef is very lucky to get a 7 though. I thought he was decidedly average. Again.
Drop kicks with an overlap, backflip passes to no one. One or 2 other basic errors.
Adi should have come on with 20 to go.

    On that point..

I was watching a replay, and I am sure the ref blew the final whistle and then after the assistant ref said something, continued the game..

    Anyone else see this?

@Muzi (Comment 7) : The problem is that Elton is playing against B teams. Wait until he has to go against the A team flyhalves in the Super 15 next year. But then I doubt he will, Butch will start for the Lions then.
