Injury blows for Province

Western Province coach Alister Coetzee has been hit with some bad news this week, ahead of his side’s Currie Cup clash against the Leopards.

Demetri Catrakilis, the Ikeys Varsity Cup flyhalf who has stepped up so well to claim the number 10 jersey after an injury crisis in the Western Province ranks ruled out virtually all other contenders, has himself been ruled out for this weekend after sustaining a bicep injury against Griquas. Catrakilis, who has emerged as this season’s second-highest points scorer, will probably be replaced by scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage as his team is forced to turn to a makeshift option at flyhalf.

Worse news, though, is that Duane Vermuelen – the big number 8 who was earlier in the year named Currie Cup captain for Province – will play no rugby at all for the remainder of the season. Vermeulen had knee surgery after the Super Rugby competition and most pundits felt that he was a strange choice for captain, given the length of the rehabilitation period required. With that period now extended for a second time, at least Province know where they stand with Vermeulen and will continue to use hookers Tiaan Liebenberg and Deon Fourie as captains.

Nick Koster has established himself as an exciting option at number 8 in Vermeulen’s absence as well.

  • Damn, Demitri carried that injury into the Kwas game, you could see how heavily his arm was strapped.

  • Wonder how far Cronje is from coming back. Would like to see him gain some confidence at this level. Probably the best 10 in the Cape when he gets settled, but with all these injuries he’ll be lucky to get his career started.

Anyone have an idea how far Cronje or van Aswegen are from coming back?

  • @hendrikp (Comment 3) : Cronje is actually available for selection this weekend and would probably have played off the bench on Saturday

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 5) :

Then why not play him at flyhalf instead of moving Duvenhage?

Or is the Duvenhage move to flyhalf just a rumour to start with?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 6) : I think because he will have absolutely no match fitness, I don’t think its a rumour at all, Duvenage has hit out at 10 enough times and well I honestly beleive that Allister can’t wait to see the back of Cronje.

Where will Cronje go though? Do you have any idea?

Who will you play at scrumhalf then?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 8) : I’ve heard Bulls but I can’t place any weight on that.

Louis Schreuder will come in at scrumhalf.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 9) :

Why would he want to see the back of Cronje? What’s the problem? From what I saw at Junior World Champs he could be a very very very good flyhalf. Just needs a bit of maturity.

Hope he doesn’t go to the Bulls. Shouldn’t give up on his career just yet!

  • @hendrikp (Comment 11) : You really get the impression he doesn’t rate him. The mutterings around the Newlands press box are the same, the coach doesn’t have the biggest crush on Cronje.

I think he is a decent talent, if going to the Bulls gives him some gametime then so be it, maybe he should have a look at PE.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 12) :

Don’t think it was that he didn’t rate him. If you consider his performance when he started that game against the Blues (almost cost us that game before Sadie and de Jongh rescued it in the 2nd half with Duvenage at 10), then you’d see why they said he wasn’t ready.

AC explained his selection of van Aswegen ahead of Cronje during the S15. Said he felt Cronje wasn’t mature enough at that level yet. That he didn’t believe the player had the confidence yet against tough opposition, and it showed.

But Cronje will get there with oppurtunities. It starts at CC level. If he settles, then he’ll make it at S15 level also.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 13) : I think theres more to it, if you check Coetzee in the press conferences when they mention Lionel Cronje its almost as if he has to swallow a mouthfull of bile before he can give his answer.

Look, you may be right and I could be a bit of a conspiracy theorist here.
