McLeod ruled out

Injury news from the Sharks camp is that scrumhalf Charl McLeod has, as expected, been ruled out of Saturday’s game against the Pumas.

The newly-capped Bok went off just 25 minutes into last Saturday’s game against the Bulls, having injured his shoulder and Sharks team doctor Ewoudt van der Linde has confirmed that he will definitely sit out this weekend’s encounter – and possibly also next week’s important away game against the Cheetahs.

Conrad Hoffmann, who took over from McLeod at Loftus and performed well, will move into the starting scrumhalf berth, with Ross Cronje recalled from the club ranks to provide cover off the bench. The latter is suggested to have concluded a deal to join the Lions at the end of the season, meaning that these next two weeks may well be the last time that the popular Michaelhouse boy will play in Sharks colours.

Cronje’s recall to the Currie Cup side couldn’t have come at a worse time, though, for his club side, College Rovers who, having secured their spot at the National Club Championships, will now look to defend that title without one of their key backline playmakers.

  • How strange the world we live in is. 🙂

The day after news breaks about a possible move, the guy gets called up. 🙂

I say the Sharks should ask him if it’s true or not and if it is then play Reinach and not Cronje. Invest in what you are going to have available and not in what you won’t.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) :

And you consider Reinach good enough to one day be the Sharks starting scrumhalf? If not then why bother when you can bring in a guy who’s been part of the system, and can deliver if you need him? I think they’d be stupid to look past Cronje.

Not that I wish injury on any player, but I’m glad to see that Hoffmann will be getting some game time. Would like to see the Sharks rotate the bench every week so a few of those players can get some more game-time (even if it’s at club level). Hoffmann is ‘potentially’ the best scrumhalf, by far, at the Sharks.

  • KSA Shark(comment1) You hit the nail on the head – the message will go to other players considering moving. But IMO Sharks management need to be more transparent with their younger talent too – buying in players does unsettle. 🙂

  • @hendrikp (Comment 3) : Why would Reinach not be good enough? While I’ve seen very little of him this season, what I have seen was good.

I’m saying playing Reinach IF Cronje confirms that he has signed for someone else, I’m NOT saying play him ahead of Cronje.

Sends the wrong message telling a player he’s not part of the squad anymore if he chooses to sign elsewhere. It’s not professional. The difference with Jano Vermaak was that he was dishonest.

You don’t do that to a player. If Cronje is the best, he should play.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 5) :

Also I think Reinach is another of those players who are probably hyped up a bit more because of the need in the position, rather then his actual ability. Haven’t seen much, but what I’ve seen hasn’t exactly been what I’d call S15 quality. They’d be better off trying to pinch Nic Groom for a 3rd scrumhalf.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 6) : So in a competition that almost everyone is crying out to be used as a platform to give youngsters a chance to see what they can do, you want to use a youngster who has confirmed (remember that I am saying Reinach must play IF it is confirmed) that he will not be part of your squad for next year???

    That is very flawed logic.

The Sharks would not be benching a frontline player because he signed for another club, they are probably the ONE union that don’t hold players back who want to leave. They would however (if they played Cronje who has signed for another union) be aiding to the further development of a player who they know is leaving them. In effect robbing a player who WILL be there next year of valuable exposure.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 7) : If the prospects of Reinach have been hyped a bit because there is a need for a scrumhalf surely Cronje should have been the one who should have been hyped about?

I did not mention Reinach as S15 quality BTW, we have McLeod and Hoffman for that, IF either of them is injured then our #3 would have to step up (provinces with 3 S15 quality scrumhalves are like hens teeth) whether we liked it or not. I would rather have a #3 step up who has CC experience. Experience that can be gained now rather than giving it to a player who is leaving.

I just want to see the best players starting, regardless of age. If that means it’s a youngster, then so be it.

In the Bulls case for example I want Arno Botha starting ahead of Stegmann or Potgieter. Not because he’s younger. Because he is better.

My thoughts were the stronger the CC is, the better?

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 13) :

I don’t think it would matter if he has CC experience. If he’s not good enough, he won’t cut it regardless.

He’s been hyped up ahead of Cronje because he’s younger. A few years ago I’m sure you guys posted the same things about him.

But in a couple of years we’ll talk about Reinach 😉

  • Have we forgotten that the Sharks have a certain contracted and monthly paid player in JLP sitting around and picking his nose. Put him on the bench and get Michalak to cover scrumhalf. Either that or sell JLP, but its a waste of money for him to hold tackle bags and go surfing on game days!

A frontline player should play until he is finished with his contract.

Cronje is NOT a frontline player though and is only 3rd (4th if we count Michalak) in the pecking order so playing him would help develop him rather than benefit the Sharks IF the rumours are true.

IF the Rumours are true then rather give a guy you are going to use next year the exposure than giving it to a guy who will be gone next year.

  • The only 2 bonus points the sharks have gained this season has been when Rosscoe Cronje is starting. I think this paid tribute to his decision making and flair. He already has super rugby experience and I believe that he would be a valuable 3rd scrumhalf in Super rugby. Although where there is smoke there is fire and I believe this rumour has more truth than lies to it.
