Round 8 of the Currie Cup has come to an end and it’s time to have a look at how the various team managers are faring in the Fantasy League over on www.justrugby.net.

The battle at the top of the table continues as Hansa (Byrne99) has extended his lead to 26 points over new second placed team, Red Zibearians. Zibbie and his Red Zibearians ended third overall in the round and took second place away from Te Maklik, who finished twentieth in the current round. The round was won by Greg The Lion, who managed 650.75 points (including the 50 MVP points), beating JarsonX and the White Stripes by 11 points to take the MVP. Greg’s Lions’ top performance in the eighth round has pushed him onto the top 20 overall. The White Stripes, after finishing second in the round, has quite a lead in fourth spot over Dwellies Sharks in fifth.

Although the round scores were higher than last week, the individual scores were relatively low with prop Marcel van der Merwe ending top of the pops with 31 points. He just ousted his front row buddy Coenie Oosthuizen who finished a single point behind on 30. Third, fourth and fifth all finished on 23 points. Elton Jantjies, JJ Engelbrecht and Rudi Vogt finishing what is effectively tied third.

Eight rounds into the competition, Fred Michalak still leads the overall points log, on 153 and still has a 19 point lead which is now occupied by Sias Ebersohn, who is on 134 points. Ebersohn overtook Demetri Catrakilis who has fallen to third spot, seven points behind on 127. Centre Johann Sadie has jumped to fourth and joins Jano Vermaak on 116 points. Even though we generally only cover the top 5, but sixth spot deserves a special mention, Boom Prinsloo racking up the points and is only 13 points behind the high scoring backline players.

The above log should see some interesting changes after this weekend as we are aware that Demetri Catrakilis will not be playing. Also, Sias Ebersohn will again only feature from the bench in the Cheetahs’ game, with Johan Goosen given a run against the Bulls. From the Sharks camp, the early week injury news is that Charl McLeod will not be taking part in the match against the Pumas. News from Johannesburg is that Josh Strauss and Doppies la Grange will both start this weekend, meaning that fantasy managers can entrust them with starting spots again.
