I’ll take the points

While the Sharks hardly dished up a vintage performance against the Pumas on Saturday, I feel that the ultimate result of five log points in the bag, is the important thing.

Looking at the game in the context of the season so far, I’ll be honest and admit that I wasn’t expecting so much as the bonus point, given the way the Sharks have struggled in these games against supposedly lesser opposition. The leopard doesn’t change his spots, so they say, at least not overnight and to expect that the team would suddenly have overcome all their problems and put 80 points past the Pumas was probably a little naive.

No, the key thing here is progress and something that the fans would do well to credit is that the Sharks are, in fact, winning the vast majority of their games. They had only managed bonus points in two fixtures prior to this one, making even that feat against the Pumas one to celebrate. We as fans tend to have exacting standards and expect the team to always live up to them, but perhaps, sometimes, we need to shelve those and rather love the team we have.

The Sharks, in short, are still in very good nick in this Currie Cup and with home games against both Western Province and the Lions to come, can do a fair bit of damage to the sides above them. A first-place finish is by no means out of the question, although second now does look more achievable, with a win at home against Province now becoming the significant result that the Sharks simply must achieve. Saturday’s draw between the Cheetahs and the Bulls was a real blessing and the team can now go to Bloemfontein full of confidence, knowing that even a slip-up there will not see them drop further than the third place they currently hold.

  • What concerns me is the amount of points scored against us.

  • @JarsonX (Comment 1) : it is a concern, but that intercept try was just lucky… I reckon if you take those 7 points out, it’s a more accurate reflection.

My feeling is that the Sharks weren’t actually all that bad for 80% of the game… it was just impatience and individualism that halted their momentum at crucial times

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : I’m actually referring to other games as well. The Bulls’ 4 last week, the thrashing by Griquas etc.

  • @shaniboi (Comment 5) : exactly… jee, with all the moaning we’re doing after a victory, imagine how bad it would be if we actually lost?

  • What has happened to Mvovo? He got one chance and ran straight into the defender. Didn’t even try and take him on the outside.

  • The Sharks are very well known for not being able to up their game and put away the ‘minnows”. Having said that we did get the 5 points so cant really ask for more. And how the Pumas have not won a game i dont know. I think they just dont know how to win and close out a game which is the case of a lot of the smaller less successful teams.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 7) : I think the lad has got to be struggling a bit with the disappointment of not making the World Cup squad. He needs to get over it quickly, though, because a guy like Mark Richards would have made more of the chances on Saturday and Plum knows that

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : Yeh i agree with u Rob. There is no room for sentiment in professional sport. I know Plum is backing the player, Mvovo, but guys like Richards have produced and need to be brought on. On a funny note, JLP looked a bit surprised to be on the field again on Sat! Thought he did ok tho!

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : I hope he does. The best way for him to overcome the disappointment of not going to the RWC would be to prove that he should have been on the plane.

But he’s still young and learning so hopefully he’ll bounce back, but he has work to do, because at the moment he is a shadow of the player he was last year.

The way the Sharks are playing doesn’t help, though. Between Mvovs and Sburu they touched the ball about 5 times in the entire game.

  • Luckily I missed the first half so I had less stress than you guys this weekend.

Maybe it`s a good thing the pumas pushed us to perform. Otherwise we never would`ve gone for the bonus point try!
