The Lions team to take on the Leopards on Friday has been announced, with a few changes from the team that took care of Griquas last weekend.

Wikus van Heerden has picked up a knee injury and has been ruled out of the match and is replaced by Johan Snyman in the second row. Michael Rhodes comes into the starting line-up and Derick Minnie switching flanks to complete the loose trio with Josh Strauss.

Deon van Resnburg takes a complete break from rugby, falling out of the match 22 completely, being replaced by Jannie Boshoff in the 14 jersey. The bench sees Rudi Paige providing backup to Michael Bondesio.

Golden Lions: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Jannie Boshoff, 13 Doppies la Grange, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Joshua Strauss (c), 7 Michael Rhodes, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Johan Snyman, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg

Substitutes: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse, 18 Warrem Whiteley, 19 Jaco Kriel, 20 Rudi Paige, 21 Burton Francis, 22 James Kamana

  • Without Wikus van Heerden, the average age in this team has dropped to about 24…

  • They’ll still get smashed in the Super 15. 😐

Won’t get any flair from la Grange as a centre. Bondesio is a poor scrumhalf. About time they get an actual lock in there – Johan Snyman. And they definitely need a bigger mongrel blindside like Rhodes to build that starting XV for next year.

At the moment I’d say the front-row, Franco van der Merwe, Joshua Strauss, Elton Jantjies, Lionel Mapoe & Jaco Taute are the only ones that have established themselves as the starters – no contest.

Ruan Venter will be a good lock for them in a couple of years if they aren’t going to back the likes of Johan Snyman, David Bulbring & George Earle.

Anyone know much about that other young lock, Ruan Botha I think his name is?

Deon van Rensburg has had quite a good centre, don’t you think?

  • @hendrikp (Comment 10) : I would rather have Alwyn Hollenbach in my team than anything the sharks have to offer in centre!

  • @hendrikp (Comment 10) :

I’d add Minnie, Maku, and Hollenbach as def starters..

In agreement with Bandesio, not a Superugby player.

With regards to us being smashed ..we’ll wait and see ..

See Mclovin opnions ..and he knows his rugby 😎 πŸ˜€

  • @CoffeeshopBok;-) (Comment 16) :

Sorry I said that wrong. I wasn’t referring to ‘definite starters’. In that case there would be a few that you could include that maybe don’t quite cut it… rather I was referring to players I think they can build a team around. Maku is included as part of the front-row I referred to.

Not sure Hollenbach will measure up as a 12. That channel will be targeted way more at S15 level and even though we all hate to see it, being able to ‘crash ball’ is also important for a 12. They’d probably be better off switching back to Doppies when the Super 15 rolls around.

And Minnie’s a decent player but the Lions need to aim higher if they want to actually do something with this team. Try bring through a Springbok in each position sort of thing, instead of settling on the average players. πŸ˜€

  • @hendrikp (Comment 17) :

Absolutly and the talent is there but it comes down to their atitude and desire to aim for Bok rugby and hopefully playing in a winning side.

We are short a quality center for the future..Taute can fill 12 and imo could be very good there ..but I see him as a future Bok 15 ..

Doppies never lets u down but he is also getting along though ..

  • @Greg (Comment 20) :

 I’m not even so sure the Lions have it in them to win this Currie Cup. Reckon they’d get knocked over in the play-offs by SOMEBODY surely! Not much true quality there, but you’ve got to give John Mitchell credit. He’s got a good culture going there and he’s playing the right sort of rugby with the players that he has.

lol . i missed where we got smashed every weekends this year in Super 15 . i think there where about 2 or 3 weeks when we where completely outplayed . i think we could aim for a mid table finish

Hollebach plays much better than doppies id say . Taute and Elton are legends in the making . so is baardman !! hehe
