Skeate confirmed out

Those who saw Ross Skeate leave the field just 11 minutes into the Sharks’ game against the Pumas last week – and have been following the saga of his broken nose on Twitter – will be unsurprised to learn that the big lock has been ruled out of action for two weeks or so, while the damage heals.

Sharks coach John Plumtree has confirmed that Skeate isn’t expected to be ready to play again until the Sharks host his former side, Western Province, on 1 October, meaning a likely return to the starting lineup for Anton Bresler. Jandre Marais will no doubt come back into the 22 as lock replacement wile Skeate is out.

The only other injury concerns for the Sharks are the ongoing shoulder problem troubling scrumhalf Charl McLeod – that should keep him out for another week at the most, since backup Ross Cronje has been released to play in the National Club Championship for Rovers next week – and loose forward Ryan Kankowski, continuing his rehabilitation for a broken thumb.

The Sharks side to face the Cheetahs will be announced later today.

  • Nice to see Conrad Hoffmann getting a few games though. He’s not ‘slow’ as some are making out, and will only get better with significant game-time.

Really is a case of are the Sharks happy with sticking with the average McLeod? Or give game time to someone who’s got the potential to push Hougaard and Pienaar for the Springboks 9 jersey? 😀

Do you have some Western Province knowledge on Hoffmann? What did you make of him while he was in the Cape?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) :

From what I’ve seen of Hoffmann, he reminds me a lot of Ruan Pienaar.

Some players have the small things that you don’t take notice of… like holding the ball in good positions to link with other players (keeping it alive etc.), vision to make things happen, a good boot… Hoffmann looks special.

Hoffmann for me is a guy who can do anything. McLeod is a less talented version who works his butt off, but was nowhere near Springbok standard. Should’ve been Jano Vermaak before him (not Sarel Pretorius as some say). I like McLeod as a back-up option, but I think Hoffmann, if he stops getting injured, is one of the most talented rugby players in SA. Could probably stick him anywhere in the backline.

@Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) : He was damned talented, had a crappy shoulder injury and then got shuffled around the backline till he got gatvol and went to warm the bench at the Sharks 😀

I agree with you re vision and the ability to make things happen and thats where the flyhalf experiment came in, then it was fullback and then wing and then ai ja.

I remember when he played his first S14 game and totally owned it.

  • When will we see the team announcement? Early Saturday morning?

I would really love to see Adi get a start. Also wish Ross could have been available to play. I like his style of play. He seems to read the game very well. He’s quick to the breakdown, and seems very un-phased under pressure. I like his decision making; he has lots of potential if given a chance. I really hope he sticks around for a while longer, even though Plum hasn’t used him much this season when he’s had a choice.

Hey and also great to see Lambie get a start, albeit at the expense of others, but who cares, as long as another sharkie gets his turn, I’m okay with it. And this weekend there’s two sharkies making their World Cup debut, as Odwa is on the wing two. I hope they both have a great game!

  • Does Ross being released to play for Rovers give us further indication that he is moving to the lions? I hope not.!!there was a time when Ross wasn’t popular on this site. I’m glad people are now recognising his talent.:)

  • @mikey (Comment 14) : I think the immediate implication is that McLeod will definitely be ready for next weekend, if not this weekend. He is third choice scrumhalf at the Sharks and that may factor into his decision if indeed there is a decision to make.

  • @mikey (Comment 14) : I’m still not the biggest fan of the guy. I always felt like he had talent, but his confidence sometimes goes into cockiness and I just don’t like that in players.

This weekend at the game he was running tackle bags at the pre-match warm-up. He walked around while everyone else was running into place. His attitude was one of someone that really just didn’t want to be there.

Maybe he felt like he should be with his club team, to me it came across as a player who felt he shouldn’t be the one carrying the tackle bags. Whatever his reason for his attitude, I feel like a player should always be excited to have an opportunity to play for his province.

Still, there is no denying his talent, but maybe his attitude could do with a readjustment. I don’t know him personally, this is just my observation from afar.

  • @Letgo (Comment 17) : fair observation but his performance didn’t indicate a negative attitude. (Driving people back in the tackle, line breaks, quick ball, etc).its a shame he seemed to have a negative attitude though. I don’t see the point in rushing mcloed into the 22 when Cronje played so well last week. Maybe there is something we don’t know about?

    Or

Do you think he will be the 2nd best scrummie after FdP have left? In that case who would you think is the best? I’d guess F Hougaard?

We know what he is capable off. He just needs to deliver it again. Do you think that just maybe he’s bok selection at the EOYT went to his head?

Something we have to remember behind the form of all our players is how they are being coached.. Plum might be telling them to do things differently…

  • And just before I forget some one mentioned on another thread that Marcell C looked out of sorts and thought he was being over played ,I would think that this dip in form coincides with the return of Deysel who has probably stollen the spot light in some sense. What this says to me is that Marcell is most comfortable as a ball carying blindside in which case he is behind both deysel and alberts

This would be my loose trio for next year. Backup players in brackets.

    6. Keegan (Botes)
    7. Alberts (Deysel)
    8. Kanko (Coetzee)

That’s assuming all of them are in top form..
