Rampant Cheetahs smash Sharks

The Sharks were sent back to Durban with their tails firmly between their legs after suffering an humiliating 53-32 loss to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein yesterday afternoon. While the home side only outscored their visitors by five tries to four, the metronomic boot of flyhalf Johan Goosen ensured that they emerged comfortable winners in the end.

A bright start for the hosts saw them gain the early physical ascendancy, with their robust pack making good progress against a Sharks 8 that looked a little shell-shocked at the intensity of what was being thrown at them. With the Sharks quick to invoke the ire of referee Marius Jonker, it wasn’t long before Goosen succeeded with with the first of five penalties – and although this first was soon neutralised by a Fred Michalak equaliser – Goosen soon stroked over two further 3-pointers to take the Cheetahs out to a 9-3 lead after a quarter of an hour.

A wonderful set piece move from the Sharks saw Stefan Terblanche score the opening try in the right-hand corner, with another Michalak penalty soon after the missed conversion putting the visitors ahead, briefly, at 11-9. Goosen, who showed that his boot is by no means the only impressive part of his game, scored a wonderful individual try shortly afterwards to wrestle the lead back. As the ball started to see some air towards the end of the half, the teams then traded goals with Lwazi Mvovo’s score cancelled out by Lappies Labuschagne’s. successful conversions on both sides saw the Cheetahs take a 23-18 lead into the change room, along with much of the momentum.

Any chance of the Sharks sneaking this one, though, ended pretty quickly after half time, with Goosen again nailing a penalty and a wonderful drop goal – from all of 50m out – to stretch the lead to 11 points again. The Sharks scored a well-worked try through Jacques Botes, although it was again a Mvovo break that set it up, but once replacement lock forward Jandre Marais had been carded for a high-tackle – in the build-up to a great try by Ashley Johnson – the floodgates opened well and truly. Labuschagne soon bagged his second, with Tewis de Bruyn’s score then bringing up the half century for the hosts.

For the Sharks, there was scant consolation from Botes’s second try, late in the game, which at least gave the a bonus point which some might argue was a little undeserved given the comprehensive nature of the Cheetahs’ victory.

Scorers:
Cheetahs (53): Tries Goosen, Labuschagne(2), Johnson, De Bruyn. Conversions Goosen(3), Sias Ebersohn(2). Penalties Goosen(5). Drop goal Goosen.
Sharks (32): Tries Terblanche, Mvovo, Botes(2). Conversions Michalak(2), Meyer Bosman. Penalties Michalak (2)

  • this lose is not normal. in fact, it is not common either. our problems are the centres of two former free-state has beens. if the sharks want to win, they must get ou steyntjie back for next years super rugby competition before it’s too late. something just tells me he is getting tired of the french life and is getting hungry for some braai vleis and pap. πŸ˜•

  • @Talent (Comment 5) :  Goosen is not available dream on its no surprise he turned down a bulls junior contract in grade 10.
He has a two year contract with the cheetahs already signed last month.
The kid is loyal to the cheetahs .
And we all know how mr herold verster is he will take you to court if you try poach goosen.

The bulls are in need of a new young flyhalf and i would seriously look at Lionel Cronje the boy can jol and heyneke meyer can fix his head.

Geez dude, Lambie has excelled at 10 in Super rugby and even played there for the Boks, and after 2 or 3 games you want him shunted to 15 to accommodate the latest CC flavour of the month?

Goosen has a lot of talent, but let’s see him prove himself at a higher level before stuffing Pat around.

  • Is this the same lambie who practually won the currie cup final for us last year..

Guys I honestly think three differences in our team last year compared to this year is lambie, sykes and strauss..the team gelled n played like a unit..this year the boys look more like individuals then team mates..

Sithole I rate is one of the best promising young players playing in the sharks set up..he is showing up mvovo big time..could be quiet a good center moving..big strong n like a steam roller the boy is..

Don’t rise to the bait. At the end of the day, Lambie is at the WC at 20, living the dream. No amount of hateration is gonna change that.

    @shaniboi (Comment 17) :
Sithole is super-strong and quick with ball in hand. But Mvovo scored 2 great tries on Saturday, and Sithole’s defence is still suspect.

All the best to the kid, but let’s not cast Mvovo aside just yet.

As a bulle supporter i am glad he is not at loftus we certainly know how to stuff up young talented running flyhalves. πŸ‘Ώ I hope Tony Janjies eltons boet is better than his brother πŸ˜€

Down there at Queens College there is a kid by the name of joshua stander he has already signed a bulls junior contract and i believe he is the next big thing after goosen.

  • I don’t think anyone is not saying Johan Goosen is not super-talented. Just like everybody else, I have been hearing (and occasionally) seeing his talent since before the performance-inducing supplements issue.

The point is simply that Pat has produced the goods at the highest level, and that deserves a helluva lot of respect.

Goosen’s instinct for space is as instinctive as Quade Cooper’s, but he seems to have enough toe to even play 15, so I for one am not assuming that a future Bok (and maybe Sharks ) backline will have to choose between the 2.

  • The Sharks scored 32 points which is good enough on attack! But if u concede 53 points you will lose most games!
So i think we should worry less about the attacking from our centres and more about the defense of the team! I dont remember the Cheetahs breaking through the centres too often, but everywhere else on the field the Sharks missed tackles!
We looked like 10yr old girls trying to defend!
If thats the standard of defense we are going to get then the Currie Cup is a 2nd tier competition. Any Super Rugby side would have put 100 past the Sharks on Saturday!

We have far tooo many average junior centres doing nothing at the bulls.

Sadie..Jho..Small Smith..Serfontein..Francois Venter and Swanepoel are the young players who can make the step up BUT do not be surprised if venter or small smith end up going to other unions.

  • I don’t think we should be overly churlish about Goosen either. The kid put in a great performance against a pretty useful team on paper. While I agree that it’s completely premature to call him a legend, he played bloody well against the opposition he faced on the day and that’s all you can really ask for.

I don’t want him to come to the Sharks simply because I feel we have more than enough great young options at flyhalf and to not play Goosen at flyhalf would be a waste of a great natural talent. But I do like to think that I’m big enough to concede that it is possible for teams other than the Sharks to possess good players

lol . and when the Sharks win the Currie cup is great but if the Lions like like winnings its watered down πŸ˜›

we are just the guys sitting in the corner keeping up the AVG by saying . ‘you guys lost more players to other unions then to the boks and THATS why your struggling to keep up the pace in the currie cup ‘ πŸ˜›

  • @KSA Shark Β© (Comment 32) : see, now comments like that irritate me. Surely we want all juniors with talent to make the step up, why do you seem to want him to fail? Because he isn’t from the Sharks?

I for one am VERY excited about the talent he has, and can’t wait to see what he can do at SR level, he could be a great asset to the Cheetah’s and even the Boks one day.

  • @molly (Comment 73) : Making the step up is great, what winds me up (or irritates me) is the FACT that every player who has one or in this case two good games is suddenly the best thing since sliced bread and has to be the next Bok in their playing position.

Since the start of the 2011 season everytime someone has a good game, we just HAVE to buy him, bring him back to SA, or make him the next Springbok. It gets more than just a little tiring.

i guess EP’s woes of the recent past have primed me to be able to celebrate all youngsters including the one nurtured in my own province/union even when they excel for the benefit of others…

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 64) : agree! Marcell is still a boy and I think he’s taken a heavy physical toll. We all know how Plum likes to break his 7s… Deysel and Alberts have both been worked into the ground before. I think Marcell is probably just bloody sore and needs a bit of a break.

  • Lord, save me from sanctimonious proselytizers. πŸ™„

A rugby blog is for discussing rugby (and on this site, a Sharks bent should not be a surprise); I find it amusing that some people want to come and live their messianic fantasies out here saving fans from their undenied fanaticism for their team.

Dude, I can’t deny your ability to stir emotion. And I seldom disregard what you say, even though sometimes I think that you tell the truth, but in a way meant to rub people up the wrong way. Doesn’t change the fact that you know your rugby of course.

    @Zibbie (Comment 83) :
Dude, you can say whatever you like; just don’t be surprised if people on a Sharks site don’t agree with you.

Regarding the watered-down CC, I apologise if I offended you. I didn’t think I would – after all, nobody has won this CC yet. It could yet be the Sharks, and my remark about it being watered-down will still apply – I’m not targetting any team in giving my opinion on this.

im not offended . more im …. bamboozled lol . im sorry that i sounded attacking in any way . my frustration is not specifically aimed at you . More people in general and again i apologies

i do however feel a bit frustrated . i do feel the Lions are showing some improvement . im not saying they are going to wipe everybody of the board in next years Super 15 . but i do believe we will give a much improved performance

and i do not base this hope/believe on the fact that we beat The Sharks or the Bulls (although enjoyable i must admit πŸ˜› )

In recant years the Lions have not only struggled against the top 4 teams . we have struggled to put away smaller sides like the pumas ( last year we won the away game narrowly in the dying minutes and the home game we lost ) and the Griquas we last beat twice in a season in 2008 .
