Cronje starts for WP

DHL Western Province coach Allister Coetzee today named his team to face the Toyota Cheetahs at Newlands at 5pm on Braaiday.

Coetzee who is surprisingly still sporting a full head of hair has managed to string together 22 players to take to the field. JD Moller gets to pull on the number 1 jumper for the first time in ages after the young Ginger prop Steven Kitshoff entered the “out for the rest of the season” club.  Lionel Cronje , who recently signed a contract with the Bulls has been given the poisoned flyhalf jumper and must be wondering if this is some sort of cruel joke by the coach.

Hylton Lobberts and De Kock Steenkamp continue as the preferred second row partnership, I would have preferred having any other number 5 in the squad but I think its one of the only surviving relationships in this campaign.

There was talk in the week of possibly playing livewire hooker Deon Fourie at flank in an effort to aid their ball retention at the breakdown but that idea has been shelved and WP are starting the loose trio of Fenton-Wells , Daniller and Koster. Deon Fourie will wear the number 16 jersey.

In the backs Dewaldt Duvenage will pull the strings seeing that its Cronjes first proper hit out for months (he played off the bench for Hamiltons 2nd team last week) , Brache and Sadie will continue as a midfield partnership with Sadie also almost not making the squad due to a stomach ailment all week.JJ Engelbrecht , Danie Poolman and Conrad Jantjes make up the back three and are also the only other stable partnership in the hoops.

Logic says that it will be a long day for the Newlands crew on Saturday but that  was also the logic for most games this season, this WP team still has alot of self belief and with the home ground advantage may put up a better than expected showing against a rampant Cheetahs side.

15 Conrad Jantjes, 14  Danie Poolman, 13  Johann Sadie, 12 Marcel Brache’, 11  JJ Engelbrecht, 10 Lionel Cronje, 9 Dewaldt Duvenage, 8 Nick Koster, 7 Tertius Daniller, 6 Nick Fenton-Wells, 5 De Kock Steenkamp, 4  Hilton Lobberts, 3 Brok Harris, 2 Tiaan Liebenberg (captain), 1 JD Moller

Substitutes:  16 Deon Fourie, 17 Frans Malherbe, 18 Nizaam Carr, 19 Siya Kolisi, 20 Louis Schreuder, 21 Berton Klaasen, 22 Heinrich Steyl

  • I hope we can still make the semis. We need at least 2 wins from the 4 remaining games! 🙄

  • I still think it’s strange that Quinn Roux is available but not on the bench. He’s in the u21s instead.

  • @beet (Comment 8) :

It definitely said Quinn Roux when they first put it up… but quickly changed to Hugo.

Would imagine that Roux would be in the senior side if he were fit considering the injuries.
