Mitchell sends Paige packing

Lions coach John Mitchell has made scrumhalf Rudy Paige the scapegoat for last weekend’s unexpected loss against the Blue Bulls, with Michael Bondesio coming back into the number 9 jersey for this weekend’s clash with the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

Stating that he won’t have a scrumhalf in his team that “can’t make his tackles”, Mitchell has dropped Paige right out of the 22 this week, opting for a back line replacement corps that contains no specialist scrumhalf cover this week. Doppies le Grange will stand in for Bondesio should the latter be unable to complete the match.

Lions team: Jaco Taute, Deon van Rensburg, Doppies la Grange, Alwyn Hollenbach, Michael Killian, Elton Jantjies, Michael Bondesio, Joshua Strauss (captain), Derick Minnie, Cobus Grobbelaar, Franco van der Merwe, Michael Rhodes, Patric Cilliers, Bandise Maku, JC Janse van Rensburg.

Replacements: Martin Bezuidenhout, Jacobie Adriaanse, David Bulbring, Warren Whiteley, Burton Francis, James Kamana, Dylan des Fountain.

  • The Cheetahs like a flowing running game, if the Lions slow the game down, play structured rugby and take the points on offer the can do it. The line out works at most 10% of the time take the 3 points and build on a lead

  • @Mutley (Comment 5) : The Lions dont play slow and structured! They run the ball from everywhere. This will be a high scoring game with defense just being the thing that surrounds the stadium.

  • I appload Mitchells` approach! We need more coaches in this country with this kind of attitude. Don`t be afraid to hurt the players feelings . . . call a spade a spade!

    Hope Plum saw this.

  • Seems like Mitchell is blaming Paige for their loss, this amounts to criticizing his player in public. Yesterday Plum got crucified for doing the same, today the opposition coach gets praised.

  • @wpw (Comment 19) : Media were always going to ask questions why he was not selected for the game, the coach would have had to explain his decision in anyway. By the way I did not comment yesterday…

  • Shame I actually thought young Rudy had a decent game. Nothing flashy but he seemed to execute the basics of scrumhalf play quite well. The Lions had a lot of ball and there weren’t any issues with the quality they got from Paige. However I obviously wasn’t paying careful enough attention to those handful of times when the Lions were asked to defend. 😳

I suspected that Mitchell didn’t trust the quality of his no. 9 juniors when he picked Doppies as backup for a few games before last Saturday.

  • @beet (Comment 25) :

Sounds to me like Mitchell not backing his players will be a problem. Earlier in the season he was more then happy to single certain players out also.

Can’t see how it’s doing Rudy Paige any good playing him for one game and then dropping him while letting him know how useless he was. Stick him on the bench and give him an opportunity to make up for it.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 26) : Mitchell didn’t exactly have good relations with key players in Perth either and before that he pissed off the NZRU – this despite having an 84% test winning record. He’s not always the most diplomatic guy. I think he can rub people up the wrong way and has a short fuse.

When he joined the Lions, I suspected that the behind the scenes nonsense that is part and parcel of the Lions organisation would finally lead to his downfall (I know Laurie Mains didn’t like it) but he’s surprised me and seems to be going strong up in Jozi. The fan base seem really happy with him and he hasn’t rubbed or been rubbed up the wrong way by key players or officials there either.

  • There are a few instances in which mowing down your own players in public can be justified.

What Lievermont and Mitchell have done doesn’t fall in that bracket.

  • I dont think Mitchell really criticised Paige if you read the article. All Mitchell said was “”Rudi got a great education last week and he knows what is required,” and this was in response to the media asking about Paige. “I certainly won’t accept a scrumhalf in the squad, going forward, if he can’t make his tackles,” Mitchell added.

I would hardly label that criticizing a player. Mitchell has constructively told Paige what he needs to improve upon in order to regain a place in the squad.
