Here’s to hoping…

So here we go again, taking apart another poor Sharks performance, looking for players to blame, looking for areas where we can blame the coach and just generally moaning and bitching about what we see on a Saturday evening when we know they can do better.

For those that know me well, you will know that I do not take a Sharks loss, or even a poor Sharks performance, very well. For those that do not know me well, you can ask Rob how I have to restrain myself in my post mortem articles.

This week, I was fuming for a bit, and I still rather disappointed in the showing put in from the boys, but upon watching a replay over the weekend, and I might get shot for this, I can see some improvements.

The problem that I see, is that the Sharks focus has gone. Instead of sticking to their game plan, and altering it to improve it as the season goes along, they are fixing individual elements. For instance, last weekend, the Sharks lacked go forward ball, so we stuck an extra loose forward in the locks and fixed it. But the effect of this what that the line-outs went to a ball of crap. Now this week we will work on our line outs, but what will go wrong this time? See where I am going with this?

The positive, in my mind, is that we are working on things. We might be left with Joubert and Stef in the run on team when they are clearly not pulling their weight, but something is happening at training to fix these individual elements, even though not much thought is given to the bigger picture. Its clutching at straws I know, but bear with me.

The selection of Adi Jacobs in the centres, and the dropping of senior players like Al Hargreaves and Fred Michalak, who are both horribly our of form and whose minds seem miles away from the Sharks, are also positives. When last did Plumtree drop a player for being horribly out of form? When last did Plum admit that he is getting it wrong and he has to look at playing Adi Jacobs.

The Sharks, albeit by some form of miracle, are still lyning in second spot on the log, and could still make that all important home semi final spot, and the best part of it all is that it is still in our hands. We do not need any favours from the Bulls or whichever other team.

Going forward, I am hoping to take even more positives out of next weekend’s game. I am hoping to see a better performance from our forwards. But most importantly, I am hoping to be able to write about a better performance from our senior players, who are letting the team down week in and week out.

So here’s to hoping…

  • Cheers! As pissed as I was / sometimes gets with the boys, I always hope for a better performance the next week, even believe we will…it’s not nice being let down, but tja, that’s me – keep my beerglass half full, please! 😉

  • Hard to be positive Rich, but certainly nobody at the Sharks is TRYING to lose.

I just wish that the changes and actions showed more high-level thinking rather than just being reactive.

Should we have been surprised that Deysel at lock with the newish Cooper at hooker would equal poor lineouts? Has Daniel and Botes in combo ever worked? What justifies selecting Joubert and Oupa?

I’m far from convinced, and hope is hard to find.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 3) :

Honestly, I found it hard to write this..

You hit it on the head, I couldn’t think of the right way to say it, but reactive is exaclty what the approach.. nothing new, just react to what’s wrong.

Cooper has been with the Sharks for years now, Im not sure how he can get the line out calls wrong? I know it was a case of two different line out jumpers in each half, but still, this is a basic rugby activity that should be 100% spot on.

As for your other questions, Daniel and Botes was always going to be too light, we all know that, and nothing justifies Joubert and Oupa ahead of the talent we have in the U21’s..

  • Richard, I must say, I admire your ability to be positive in the midst of the murk we find ourselves in. As I’ve said before, the fact that we’re near the top of the log is irrelevant in my eyes; the fact that we have not used the development opportunities offered us in this Currie Cup to address areas of weakness is what really rankles me. Well, that and the hopelessly reactive approach from our coaching staff.

Until I see evidence of the above issues being addressed (and I fear it’s possibly already too late to address it adequately before next year’s Super 15), the following will apply (I know I’ve already posted this today, but I’m full of vitriol this morning!)

The Sharks is, has and will always be my team; however, in lieu of the above, here is my list of priorities for the coming weekend. Similar criteria will be applied for the following weekends.

    1) Playing with my daughter and hanging out with my wife
    2) Bokke vs. convicts
    3) Finishing the two books that I have been busy with for what seems like an inordinate amount of time
    4) Developing deep, lasting relationships with the two whiskies I picked up in Jhb this weekend
    5) Music music music!
    17) Sorting out the mess of photos on the home pc
    18) Sticking down the edges of the wallpaper where it is lifting in the spare room
    43) Washing my hair
    87) Staring blankly into space
    143) Taking pleasure in the functioning of my respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems
    254) Watching the Sharks/Leopards

  • Rich makes some very good points here and on the one hand, it does seem a little ridiculous to be putting on the sack cloth and ashes when we’re actually still in second position. I mean, for me the real positive is that we KNOW this team can put together the sort of one off performance that can beat any other side in this competition.

It’s the lack of learning and growing that frustrates the kak out of me right now, though…. actually don’t care too much about winning or not winning the Currie Cup against a full-strength Lions side. But I want to see us stand a realistic chance in Super Rugby last year and if I’m honest, right now, I see us going backwards.

How bad has it got that I would LOVE nothing more than for Francois Sodding Steyn to come back? I used to LOATHE the guy, FFS…

Buying Frans Steyn, or any other over 25 centre would do only one thing… Chase away the likes of Paul Jordaan, Piet Lindeque, Heimar Williams and Fred Zeilinga..

We have a star academy, use it FFS!!!

  • I agree, nice article Richard.

Without being rude, there comes a time to be realistic and call a spade, for what it is, A SPADE!! I’ts an absolute joke, we are in trouble and we keep on trying to sugar coat it.

Province beat us with a Varsity cup team!!!! When last did we play well, Bulls super 15 last. We will keep on being mediocre if we do not change the way we do things.
Lets look at reality, Daniels is not a captain, he can’t even manage himself so how can he captain the team. He loses focus and would often rather play the man and not the ball.

We do not have locks, again Skeate was bought, but money well wasted.Well done Rudolph!!!!!!!! Hargreaves is a pretty boy and can’t do the grind work.

Our centres again for the last 10 months are useless to say the least, with the exception of an overweight Jacobs that do try SOMETIMES!!

Bosman is nowhere, I do not understand how he keeps on being picked, he is nowhere.Great buy Rudolph
Joubert also money well wasted, WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well done Rudolph.

John Smit is going, use that mone to get a backline for next year please.

Get Frans at 12, Johan Goosen at 10, Lambie at 15 and move Ndungane to 13!!!!!

Can we please get backline couches that can couch, identify talent and introduce flair into a useless backline.

Can we start looking at the top eg Rudolph. Shit runs downhill.

  • Spring Cleaning needed at the Sharks. Badly.

Old furniture and dead wood to be thrown out:

But numero uno on the ‘get rid of’ list:

Rudolf Strauli. Sweet t its, has there ever been a more useless talent scout and signer of has beens in the history of the game?!

  • Eish Rich, you are a better man than I am.

I am a firm beliver in let them be and they will work it out in the end. If not then I will bitch/cry/rant at the end.

Well to me we are getting closer and closer to the end and (to borrow from McLovin) we have just got beaten by the WP u/16 team.

I am to disappointed to even gather energy for a rant.

Our players and coaching staff have been plodding along all season and I’ve been hoping they would gel in the end.

    They haven’t 😥

Keegan Daniel on the other hand is usually a good Captain who had a crap day on Saturday.

I dont agree with a lot that you have said:

    1. Skeate has been the only lock to show any form this season so far, he has been a good buy, and without him we would have been in the shit.

2.Jacobs is far from overweight, and was unfairly substituted, and in my opinion, should have played the full 80.

    3. Do not buy players like Frans and Goosen if you have an academy and Baby Boks playing in your U21 team.

Most importantly, why would you want to shift Lambie from 10 in favour of a young snotkop who hasnt played 300 minutes of Currie Cup action, never mind any Super Rugby? What has Lambie done to be shifted? Seriously?

  • The players need motivation. Cannot make Bok any more this year.

This may be the core problem.

Imo the only motivation any provincial player may and MUST have is his pay check. We are in the professional era after all.

From there on I want the coaching staff to instill the next level of motivation.

Pride in the jersey, the institution you work for.

Guys if you had a business, would you be satisfied if all the workers do just enough not turn in a loss? If they monitor progress by week and ensure that you juuuuusstt make a leeetle profit?

No. Imo you would want your business to always run at max profitability and even beyond. You want to get into that zone where they refer to you as ‘the mean machine’ of the 90’s etc.

Even if the Sharks win this CC, as they may well do, they have performed just well enough not to turn in a loss. They should be kicked in very strategic places.

We as supporters, being the company shareholders, wanted them to annihilate these under par teams! We wanted everyone to get those very big eyes when they whisper about this team and to to say ” Can you imagine if they had their Bokke?”

There are a couple of decent articles locked in here….

  • dick muir said it best when he said a coach should only be there for 2 years. Then he stayed on till 2008 and started playing walon on the wing, dropping jp, playing frans at 10, dropping barrit, playing pienaar at 10. He completely lost it. Just think of what i midfield we would have now with barrit and murray had we just stuck with them. Sad
