Charl McLeod ruled out for the season

Sharks scrumhalf Charl McLeod has fractured his hip and will play no further part in his side’s Currie Cup title defence.

The 28-year-old McLeod, who made his Test dΓ©but earlier this year, picked up the injury during last weekend’s loss to Western Province at Kings Park. With Louis Ludik suffering a fracture that ruled him out for the remainder of the competition a few weeks back, as well as more short-term injuries to the likes of Ryan Kankowski and Craig Burden, the Sharks are now being forced to dig deep into their backup ranks to field a competitive team.

Coach John Plumtree has confirmed Conrad Hoffmann and Ross Cronje will take over the scrumhalf duties in McCleod’s absence.

I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, alot of you guys are so worried he’ll outshine Lambie (one day) you try so hard to write him off of ever accomplishing anything.

The situations arent the same, Goosen has played 5 very good CC games, he also excelled in all his junior rugby. He’s also only 19. Charl was 27ish when he got his call up… not exactly a future building plan there. Goosen has many years to carry on growing.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 55) :

Take it easy. I consider myself completely unbiased… so here’s what I think about some WP players.

    – Steven Kitshoff has a big future. Stormers should start him at every opportunity, and IMO he’s 3rd best loosehead in SA behind Beast & Coenie.
    – Hookers are both way overrated. Deon Fourie needs to be more direct, and learn to throw. Liebenberg good, and then bad.
    – Only Andries Bekker should be near a Springbok jersey, but I think he’ll be the best lock in the world next year.
    – Schalk 2nd greatest Springbok ever. Maybe a tad biased but it’s how I feel
    – I rate Duane Vermeulen, but not a Springbok. He wouldn’t let us down, but there are so many better players. We have tons of quality loosies.
    – If the Springboks ever want to embrace a somewhat expansive game-plan, Nick Koster is the way to go. He’s a better Kankowski. Not saying I’d put him down as a sure thing, he still needs to perform to get in, but I don’t think he should be ruled out.

-Duvenage should be 3rd-choice scrumhalf next year with FdP leaving. Behind Pienaar & Hougaard.
    – Peter Grant not a Springbok, but a decent S15 flyhalf. Catrakilis is sh… They’ll move him along eventually.
    – Danie Poolman I think has Springbok potential.

  • It is a difficult thing assessing who should be what when you have to bring overseas based players into the mix. I firmly believe if they leave they should be GONE until they come back to stay and play.

I saw Ross in the ( TAKE NOTE ) VC and he looked exciting enough to warrant a call-up, which he butchered imo. But I will give the oke 1 more chance.

  • I just want to point out that ‘blooding’ youngsters while our senior guys do not perform is making it almost impossible for a youngster to step in and perform well.

Sometimes senior players do just that to protect their places. There was a massive show at the Bokke by senior players that PDV could not handle. They made him keep them and kept him from stamping his own authority as a coach.

Coaches should be wise to senior players ganging up like that and should not let themselves being made fools of. Plumtree should take note.

  • I think this is a pretty big blow. Charl has looked good compared to our other scrummies, but hopefully Ross and Hoffman wil stepup. They are capable of producing much better than they have for the Sharks this season, especially Cronje…he looked good in the first few games of the season.

I would actually start him ahead of Hoffman.

Also, wouldn’t pull Reinach from his u/21 team now. They have a shot at making the finals and I think that would be better experience for the player, than sitting on the Sharks SENIOR team bench.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 73) : Well isnt the official reason for Michalak coming the fact that we were short at 9? I also think JLP has always been a very good Currie Cup player so dont know why we didnt utilise him at all. Reinach is very quick and has a pretty good pass on him, but does seem to be down in the pecking order.
