Sharks set for Bok injection

With the Sharks needing to record a convincing win against the Lions this weekend in order to ensure a second-place finish in the Currie Cup (along with the associated revenue from a home semi-final), John Plumtree looks set to use all the resources at his disposal to ensure a favourable result.

The Springboks’ untimely and unfortunate World Cup injection on Sunday morning has more than a hint of silver lining to it for the Sharks coach, who has done reasonably well to maintain a hold on second place despite his team of youngsters and Currie Cup journeymen never quite looking the part. A likely semi-final against the Cheetahs looms and the Sharks will want to ensure that they play that game in Durban, where the odds would hopefully be stacked a little more highly in their favour.

According to an exchange of tweets this morning, the Lions look set to include their Bok, Butch James, this weekend, while it’s not currently clear whether CJ van der Linde, who has yet to actually play for the Lions in any competition, would be eligible to play in the Currie Cup knock-outs. The Sharks, in contrast, are in a far stronger position when one looks at the personnel they have returning from New Zealand. With Plumtree bemoaning the lack of big ball carriers in his pack – a constant theme this season – the potential reintroduction of Beast Mtawarira, Bismarck du Plesses, Jannie du Plessis and Willem Alberts would do much to change the nature of the forward battle, one the Lions comprehensively won last time out.

Pat Lambie, JP Pietersen and Odwa Ndungane should return to bolster the backs and while the coach will be more than happy to have their experience in the picture, one feels that integrating them into the existing unit and reshuffling the incumbents to accommodate, may prove a tough ask indeed.

The double-edged sword here is clear to see. The Sharks, as recently as two years ago, saw how disruptive an influence returning internationals can be, particularly at such a late stage in the season. That said, the Sharks are hardly looking a happy, relaxed bunch with plenty of rhythm at the moment anyway and while throwing his Boks in en masse is somewhat of a gamble for Plumtree, it’s perhaps a less desperate one than hoping that the team that played against the Leopards on Saturday will be able to beat the Lions.

  • Well I guess there are some positives to take out of this Currie Cup.
Sithole = great attacking runner (needs to brush up on defence)
Chadwick = great scrummager (work rate is quite low)
Still, I’d like to have seen some young centres coming through. The return of the Boks doesn’t change this glaring weakness,

  • Whenever the Boks returned to the CC we seemed to take a dive in recent years. However, we had been playing a fluent, ball-in-hand game and the Boks returned with their punt and pray mindset; the two of which don’t gel very well.

This time round there is no game plan, so it won’t make a difference to the style we play, but we get back some quality personnel.

  • Re CJ and returning boks .

i think its my understanding that a player had to be signed with the union at the start of the season for him to be able to play in the Semis ?

As this was the case i dont think we would be able to use CJ in the semis but maybe this weekend against you guys … all very confusing if you ask me …

It will be interesting to see how we go against the Lions.

1 Beast Mtawarira 2 Bismarck du Plessis 3 Jannie du Plessis 4 Jean Deysel (continue on with him here) 5 Ross Skeate 6 Keegan Daniel 7 Willem Alberts 8 Marcell Coetzee 9 Conrad Hoffmann 10 Frederic Michalak 11 Lwazi Mvovo 12 Meyer Bosman 13 Adi Jacobs 14 JP Pietersen 15 Patrick Lambie

16 John Smit/Kyle Cooper 17 Wiehahn Herbst 18 Anton Bresler 19 Jacques Botes 20 Ross Cronje 21 Marius Joubert 22 Stefan Terblanche.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 38) : I would like to see us persist with jandre M at lock with skeate ,I think having deysel at lock is a short term fix. I would fit him in there with a big powerfull looseforward trio and a heavy/experienced front row.

    1.Beast
    2.Bismarc
    3.Jannie
    4.Jandre M
    5.Skeate
    6.Coetzee/Daniel(c)<- if he starts
    7.Alberts
    8.Deysel/(c)

-Massive forwards capable of carrying a youngster and developing him -coetzee is well on his way and is fast enough to play 6. Daniel to come off bench as impact or to start ahead of coetzee .

    9.Mcleod
    10.Lambie
    11.Mvovo
12.Joubert (think his future will be here -dont want to write him off just yet as a has been after what ive seen in the last few weeks)/otherwise Bosman at 12
    13.Jacobs
    14.Sithole/JPP/Ndungane
    15.Terblanche(vc)/Prinsloo

If he plays alongside some experienced players/forwards ,namely; Deysel ,Alberts, Bismarc ,Beast ,Skeate ,Jannie ,Kankowski, Daniels and Hargreeves- more than enough experience there to develop a youngster.

In the past the sharks have played with one or two big guys in the pack in an effort to balance athleticism and bulk ,what I would do is play a larger pack ,like the one I mentioned earlier. In kankowski ,DanieL and Coetzee we have a balance of athletes and power ,so rotate them between 6-8.

Probable team for the Lions Clash this weekend:

Prinsloo, JPP, Joubert ( sigh I know . .. what happened to that sevens star Paul Jordaan anyway?? ), Lambie, Mvovo, Michalak, Hoffman, Alberts, Deysel, Skeate, Bresler, Keegan, Jannie, Bissie, Beast.
Subs: Cooper, Van Staden, Marais, Coetzee, Cronje, Odwa, Stefan

Not sure if it`ll be enough cause the Lions are on a roll.

I don`t have fears that our returning bokke will disrupt anything in the team like the last time we did it. There`s nothing much to disrupt is there?

  • For me our backline is not the same at the sharks with freddy at 10 and also i would prefer we give our own stars a chance first

as for prinsloo and stefan , hell i wouldnt mind if they got switched around

  • I’d persist with Jandre on lock – he’s solid andd stepping up nicely. Looks for work too. One for the future and we need to look at the S15…bleed him for it now, rather playing Deysel out of position or putting Alberts in the lock role.

I’m waiting for an apology. I tried to warn him about the Griquas upsetting the Bulls, but he told me to stop talking kak.

If he shows up tell him I’m looking for him.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 67) : Id prefer to see him at 10 and stick at it, hes a good fullback but Im not sure he is the complete fullback ,the same as frans steyn… Imo Johan Goosen has all the qualities to be a world beater at fullback. I dont see why the dont try him there with sias at 10(@ cheetahs) becuase if they did they would be so dangerous.

  • @Ludz (Comment 79) : Hey Ludz.

    Welcome to Sharksworld.

Since the Sharks are so heavily dependent on Eastern Cape schooled rugby players, I feel so honoured to have one of the leading authorities on Border Schools rugby grace our presence.

At long last you have an opportunity to add to Muzi’s seemingly over the top yet factual statement that you are the biggest closet Sharks fan in Queenstown, as per your own admission.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 77) : Muzi’s waiting patiently for the weekly Sharks junior match reports before making a reappearance. In that way he won’t have to get too fat from eating humble pie.

Altho we did extremely well and won both games vs the Leopards, I somehow feel that Muzi will move swiftly to shift the emphasis to the mighty Bulls juniors who are well on track to establishing themselves as above WP, as the new force in SA age-group rugby. The memory of a virtual campaign ending defeat in Kimberley will become a distant memory.

Well done on being right with your brave prediction Hendrik. πŸ˜€

It was strange kind of match in which the Bulls appeared to have done what was needed but somehow couldn’t plug their leaky defense when it mattered most near the end.

  • The one thing that came to mind when we give younger players a chance at cc is what happens to their contracts…When players are exposed to higher levels of the game do they start to perhaps ask more in terms of salary?

  • Thank you for the warm welcome LADIES and Gentlemen, for those who might not know me. I am a matric boy at Queen’s College Boys’ High School (yes where Sbura Sithole and Allan Dell and Johan Meyer, who will join the Academy next year, were educated). Blue Bulls fan,but appreciate the Sharks for the opportunities they give to the young talented players down here in the Border and EP region. I know Mr Beet and Muzi from R365

  • @robdylan (Comment 99) : Meyer is a big, strong and quick 8thman who’s played 1st XV rugby at Queen’s for the last 3 years and Craven Week for the last two,the man has a mean hand off and most of the time it takes two or three tacklers to bring him down. He was definitely unlucky not to make SA Schools as he had a storming Craven Week. He formed a part of what was probably the best 8,9,10 combo in SBR this year with JP Smith no.9 and Joshua Stander no.10. Tell you a bit more about Msutwana and Germishuys later,am at school now
