Happy birthday, Pat and Fred!

Sharksworld would like to wish an incredibly happy 21st birthday to young sensation Patrick Lambie, who finally reaches his maturity today. Flyhalf Fred Michalak, who along with last Friday’s birthday boy Ryan Kankowski added a touch of the ole Libra magic for the Sharks this weekend, also celebrated a birthday yesterday, turning 29.

The thing about Lambie is that we somehow always seem to forget how young he is when making our assessments of how he plays. He tends to be lumped into the same category as seasoned veterans when we weigh up his performances and despite making his senior Currie Cup debut at 19 – and winning the competition at the age of 20 – the fact remains that he really is still in the infant stages of his professional career. So much more goodness to look forward to, in other words, from young Patrick and for his 21st birthday, we simply cannot wish him anything more that a long and injury-free career, because the more he plays, the more successful he will become.

I’m a sucker for trivia, so here’s something to mull over. Pat earned his 20th Currie Cup cap for the Sharks last week as a 20-year-old and will this week (God willing) earn his 21st as a 21-year-old. Spooky coincidence? Or am I simply getting carried away as usual?

As for Fred, well, he gave himself an early birthday present by helping himself to 23 points – and the man of the match award – against the Lions, in a performance that saw him score the opening try and succeed with 6 conversions and 2 penalties in a 100% kicking display. Playing for the Sharks in his 25th Currie Cup match, Freddy increased his lead at the top of the Currie Cup points scoring table (181 so far this season, with Elton Jantjies second on 145) as well as moving past 200 Currie Cup career points for the Sharks. Not a bad return in his last game as a 28-year-old!

Not that the Hoff did badly either, mind you, scoring his 15th career try – and then adding a 16th for good measure to take him up to 80 career points.

  • Happy birthday to both.

I was really hoping that Lambie would be celebrating this in NZ preparing for Saturday, but it was not to be.
