Lions to stay in Doornfontein

The Golden Lions Rugby Union yesterday finally ended months of speculation surrounding a possible stadium move. A potential move away from their Coca-Cola Park base in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, to the Soccer City complex in Soweto has now been finally ruled out.

Stadium Management SA (SMSA), the company that owns and manages Soccer City, has been courting the Lions Union for months now, with many fans and stakeholders thought to be supportive of a move away from the Joburg CBD, resulting in easier access and a “safer” environment. GLRU president Kevin de Klerk and his team have opted, for reasons not yet disclosed, to remain at the former Ellis Park stadium.

“We were informed by the Lions that discussions between us have concluded and that our offer was not acceptable to the Lions and that Coca-Cola Park will remain the home of the Lions,” SMSA chief executive Jacques Grobbelaar told Sports24 yesterday.

De Klerk was further quoted as saying that the GLRU will “pursue any reservations about the [current] stadium’s locality”, although I’ll admit to not really understanding what s meant by that…

  • The Lions are caught between a kakhole and a hardegat place.

They own the Coke Tin, so why would they want to move somewhere else? On the other hand, hardly anyone wants to be in that part of town these days. That said, FNB Stadium’s location (nestled between mine dumps…classy), isn’t much better.

  • The Lions MANAGEMENT are a real bunch of retards trying to find the light switch. Part of the reason why the Coke tin is so empty on a regular basis is because of where the stadium is located.

Parking is an absolute crapshoot, the stadium is located in the WORST part of Jhb and getting out of the area can sometimes be a real lottery. After my last visit, I vowed I would never return.

In my opinion, their crowd attendance would double overnight (even if they didn’t win anything) by moving from Ellis Park.

  • While im the first to admit Ellis Park is not the fun staduim to go visit like back in the 90’s there has been alot of improvements especially the upgrades for the Soccer WC ..Parking has been made alot easier and even security is alot more present than in the passed.

As Ice points out the Park and Ride is seriously efficient and actually alot of fun.

I wanted us to move more than anything but after frequenting Ellis this season I have changed my mind ..

For now Eliis Park will just have to do…

  • I would never move away from Ellis Park, it’s an awesome stadium with great atmosphere… almost just as awesome as Kings Park!

  • Has anyone noticed that the stadium which has debatably the best atmosphere and the stadium that has the worst location are both battling with the same problem?

    Poor attendance figures.

Has anyone also realised that whole of RSA is having a bit of financial difficulty at the moment?

If the spare money to buy tickets isn’t there. then it isn’t there?

  • Yaaa, not that soccer city is better located. One would need to park and ride or walk miles. At least parking at coke tin is close.
The moaners probably haven’t been to the tin for some time.

  • @rekinek (Comment 12) : I was there for the last Sharks/Lions game and I would prefer not to go there. Parking is a mess, traffic is a mess. I’d rather park and ride for Soccer City and walk for miles.

  • The reply thingy not working 🙁
Shaniboi, I think that parking prices may be dictated by whoever organises an event. Are the soccer city parking prices cheaper? I think last I paid R50 for parking at Ellis.

  • Just read KSA’s comment. I have never been to Newlands but apparently parking there is big problem but attendance usually outstanding.

  • I did. Worst organised stadium in my opinion. (Although to be honest, the only stadium I haven’t been to yet is Newlands).

  • We never had a problem, disregarding whether bought the tickets before or not.
