Lions pick CJ

In a somewhat surprising move, given that most pundits assumed he would not be available to them, the Lions have included veteran Bok prop CJ van der Linde in their run-on side to face Western Province in this weekend’s Currie Cup semi final.

The controversy stems from the fact that van der Linde only became a Lions player on 1 August, two weeks after the Currie Cup season started and has yet to represent the union in any fixture. It’s a different situation to that faced by the returning Boks bolstering the Sharks and WP sides, since those are players who have held long-term contracts with the respective unions, despite not featuring in this year’s Currie Cup. It was assumed that van der Linde would need to play in a number of regular season Currie Cup games before being eligible to appear in a semi-final; this ruling, however, appears not to be in force.

Loosehead prop JC van Rensburg has been ruled out after picking up an injury during the course of his mauling at the hands of Wiehahn Herbst and Jannie du Plessis, opening the door for former Cheetahs and Stormers prop van der Linde to start in the number 1 jersey. Other changes to the pack see Bandise Maku, Franco van der Merwe and Derrick Minnie return to the starting lineup, with Mike Rhodes moved from lock to flank.

Amongst the backs, Elton Jantjies returns at flyhalf, with Butch James somewhat surprisingly continuing bench. Alwyn Hollenbach and Michael Killian have also returned to their posts, with Dylan des Fountain and James Kamana reverting to the bench. Burton Francis – average at flyhalf against the Sharks – has dropped out entirely, while flank Baywatch Grobbelaar is bracketed on the bench with young Jaco Kriel.

Golden Lions:
15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Doppies la Grange, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Joshua Strauss (captain), 7 Michael Rhodes, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Wikus van Heerden, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 CJ Van der Linde

Substitutes: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Jacobie Adriaanse, 18 Warren Whiteley, 19 Cobus Grobbelaar/Jaco Kriel, 20 Butch James, 21 Dylan Des Fountain, 22 James Kamana

  • Intersting…doesn’t make a difference to me. Who would they have picked if he could not play?

  • Butch on the Bench?!

Surely Mitch is just playing mind games?

If they leave Butch on the bench wp`s mid-field will run riot.

  • The Official regulation for the CC is that a player has to be registered to play for them at the start of the CC season.

I am on my phone but the document (regulations) is available to download on the Saru Website.

  • Apparently the regulation of having to play 5 CC games doesn’t apply when a player is on Springbok duty

  • We’ll have to be at our best and hope Province struggle for a bit synergy and then we should win a close one …

Its the following weeks game that I feel we’ll come short …

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 2) :

I’m confident Doppies and Hollenbach will hold up the midfield just fine ..bringing Butch straight in would disrupt a combo thats preformed rather well this season.

Ofcourse its a Bok pairing they up against but hey they are human afterall…

  • @Ice Ice Bokkie (Comment 23) :

They can come in whenever, as long as they are Springboks. Don’t need to be registered at the start of the season.

I believe the rule would be they’d have needed to be contracted before the World Cup!

And so I keep hearing and reading ..being the hopless underdogs suits me just fine..

Your disdain for the Lions, the talentless bunch from Joburg is well documented 😉

By the by which team do you support ?

  • @CSB Win it for Jannie Breedt ! (Comment 26) :

I support everybody! But I lean ‘slightly’ towards Province!

If I had to measure my support it’d probably be:
    1. Province – 10
    2. Cheetahs – 9
    3. Sharks – 8.5
    4. Lions – 7.5
    5. Bulls – 6.5

You hit the nail on the head though. They are a “talentless bunch”.

  • @CSB Win it for Jannie Breedt ! (Comment 29) :

Easy! No need to get upset 😆

I’m just saying, when push comes to shove, the Lions aren’t going to have the athleticism, or be accurate enough to win big games.

Better off facing it and trying to find a solution, rather then say “Give Mitchell more time” because in truth, if you haven’t got the players to do it, they aren’t going to get very far.

Bandise Maku, Jaco Taute… it’s a good start.

    Im relaxed thanks 😀

While I agree in part with you I do feel we have a team that will get better and with a well thought out purchase of 2-3 more players we’ll be alright ..

In truth imho the following players are good enough too add to your list Jantjies, Minnie, Rhodes and Mapoe.

Our biggest issue is Lock ..its a shame Snyman got injured cause he was starting to hit some form.

Hollebach is also a good player . IMO much better than doppies . Josh is a HUGE player !!!!

We are getting Hendrik Roodt according to Reports so we have to wait and see …

All in all Elton will be our make or break player . if he has a great game were going to the finals baby !!!!
