Lions stronger where it counts?

The headline writers are, of course, climbing all over the fact that Western Province have packed their side with returning Springboks just in time to face the first-placed Lions in this weekend’s Currie Cup semi-finals. While the injection of such experience, especially amongst the backs, will no doubt vastly improve the visitors’ chances, I can’t help feeling that the Lions will emerge victorious on Saturday afternoon.

The reason, quite simply, is that the Lions appear to have a slight edge in the areas that tend to win you semi-finals and by playing to the same strengths that have seen them through most of the challenges they’ve faced this season, I feel the home side should be able to dictate the game. While it is undoubtedly true that the Province three-quarter line, at least on paper, should wipe the floor with their Lions equivalents, the fact that Alister Coetzee has only been able to add a solitary Springbok to his pack really shouldn’t swing the forward dynamic towards his side in any way.

Let’s be brutal here; the Lions cleaned up against very much the same Province pack just a few weeks ago and while we may jokingly value Schalk Burger as the equivalent of any three normal players, the reality is that he is unlikely to be able to make up for the combined failings of a pretty soft-looking Province tight five. The Lions unit, in comparison, has been strengthened by the huge experience of CJ van der Linde and would expect to dominate the forward exchanges. Neither side has hugely experienced halfbacks either, but again I feel that the Lions have better continuity in this area, since Province has been forced to chop at change behind the base of the scrum all season. Elton Jantjies will need to show that he can be a match-winner when the chips are down, of course, because his opposite number won’t be missing many shots at goal.

Province, as mentioned above, have the experience and the game-breakers out wide to win at a canter, but they’re going to need the Lions to give them the ball they need to do so and as long as Mitchell’s team don’t play stupid rugby, they should have the goods to take the game away from the visitors. The personal duel between two free-running fullbacks will be great to watch too, with Gio Aplon boasting all the guile and experience in the world, while Jaco Taute has been arguably the most consistent back of the competition so far. Don’t ever write off Michael Killian, though – the real unsung hero in the Lions back unit who will look to expose young JJ Engelbrecht, the only uncapped member of the WP three-quarter line.

This one is going to go down to the wire, but I have a feeling in my bones that the Lions will prevail, by somewhere in the region of 5 points.

  • Province will win, very unconvincingly. I just can’t imagine them losing to those lot

Anyway, on CJ van der Linde. IMO he’s had a lot of unfair criticism. Few injury concerns with the Stormers, but had a lot of the blame for the packs performance put on his shoulders.

I think sticking him in at loosehead is genius. He’ll probably give Brok Harris a very, very tough time. Have always felt that CJ has too much strength in those legs to only play tighthead. If the front-row know what they’re doing, they should be able to get a couple of tightheads minimum.

He’s not a ‘rock’. For me a very good tighthead during a time when we didn’t have any, but an even better loosehead.

  • WP will prevail – that Light 5 is not too different from the packs they have toiled to wins with before.

Enough mongrel in the loosies and penetration in the backs to make up for the lack of grunt, while their defence is still a strength.

Obviously if the Sharks win, I’ll be forced to back WP in the hopes of getting the home final. Otherwise I’d be behind the LIONS all the way.

  • I feel WP will be too ‘experienced’ in this game. While the Lions did improve vastly imo, they will now face their first ‘big’ moment with Mitchell as coach and I think they will be found wanting.

Whatever the outcome, I think John Mitchell has made a good start with very little support in getting quality players. Should they win, well, then Mitchell will definitely go to hero overnight.

  • Some history between the Lions and province. Bear in mind that these numbers relate to Currie Cup games only, from 2003 onwards.

Games played between the two teams: 18. Of these Lions have won 8, and province 9. There was one draw, 26 all, at Ellis Park, back in week 9 of 2003.

These 18 games have been split evenly between Ellis Park and Newlands.

At home, Lions have won 7/9, losing 23-38 in week 3 of 2005.

Province have won 8/9 at home, Lions prevailing 26-35 at Newlands in week 9 of 2004.

Since the Lions home loss in 2005, every game between these two has been won by the home team.

Lions at home win by an average of 9 points, which is the same average margin of all their wins over province.

Province, when they win, do so at an average margin of 13 points.

Jaco Peyper, the ref for the day, has reffed a Lions/province game only once. That, unfortunately for us, was the 32-0 loss we suffered last year at Newlands!

However, Jaco has reffed us 3 times at home, and 3 times away, against all opposition. We have won 5 of those 6!

He has reffed province twice, both times at Newlands. They won both of those games.

Of their last 5 games, against all opponents, Lions have won 2, lost 2, with 1 draw. At home, they have won 4 of the last 5 games.

Province have lost 3 and won 2 of their last 5 games, and their last 5 away games have yielded 3 wins, and 2 losses

If Province fire on all cylinders then it could mean the end of the road for us ..
