Sharks players Patrick Lambie and Bismarck du Plessis have both been nominated for the prestigious SARU Rugby Player of the Year award, the winner of which will be announced on 3 November.

SARU has released the full list of nominees for all of the awards on offer and these were arrived at by a process of media voting that required accredited parties to submit their three nominations, in order of preference, in each category. Joining Lambie and du Plessis in the most sought-after category are fellow Boks Schalk Burger, Victor Matfield and Francois Hougaard.

Each of the Sharks nominees will have another bite at the cherry should they not win the main gong, though; Lambie has additionally been nominated in the Young Player of the Year category, while du Plessis is one of five vying for the Super Rugby Player of the Year title as well.

John Plumtree gets a mention in Coach of the Year, which is also a strong field, with John Mitchell probably earmarked for the title. The Sharks’ relative dominance in this year’s Currie Cup, though, looks likely to go unrewarded, with only Fred Michalak named amongst the nominees to Currie Cup Player of the Year and no nomination whatsoever in the Team of the Year category. Wouldn’t it just be fitting if the team that wins the Currie Cup (fingers crossed) sees the one they beat in the final awarded the prize?

The final Sharks nominee is Marcell Coetzee, named in the Vodacom Cup Player of the Year section.

The winner in each category has already been decided, by a process of weighting the nominations received from the media, though, meaning that the Sharks’ recent run of form is unlikely to have featured in the equation. Don’t be too surprised, in short, to see Johan Goosen run off with every prize going, since he was the flavour of the month at the time the nominations were first asked for.

Here are all the nominees:

  • I have to say, as much as I dig Goosen’s potential, he doesn’t really have a right to be on that list of young players. You can’t put him in the same category as Hougaard and Lambie considering what they’ve achieved already. At least Taute and Jantjies have played SR.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : Good point, but I’m not sure Marcell deserves it either, did he play SR? He’s also had on and off form a little in the CC, hasn’t he? There must be other yongsters surely?

Maybe Goosen is there for his SA u21 stuff?

It would be a travesty if he won an award ..

Media hype is in overdrive for the kid …why not wait a season or 2 before getting all giddy eyed.

  • @Letgo (Comment 16) : I really don’t see why the Lions deserve it , were did they end in super rugby ,they did very well in the currie cup but with minimal disruptions, personally I think it must go to wp they at least got to the semi’s in both compititions. This award is for the whole year not just for the cc, I don’t know how they even made it on the list. It is shocking. SARU probeer hulle seker troos omdat hulle saterdag gaan verloor.

  • How can a team ending last in it’s devision and second from last in the over all log be nominated after doing well in the cc not winning. It really is a disgrace the cheetas deserve to be on that list more than the lions do. Dit is skrikwekend om te sien hoe vinnig mense kan vergeet net omdat hulle iets reg gekry het in die cc!

  • @BR (Comment 19) : I think they treat the SR teams as separate entities to the CC teams.

But you might have a good point. They should look at the teams performances in all compos from the Feb-Oct and then decide who was the best.

  • @BR (Comment 19) : You need to look at WHICH Lions team is nominated.

It is the Golden Lions (Currie Cup team) That is being nominated, NOT the GLRU or the MTN Lions from the SR competition.

By your reasoning we need to jus award the team of the year award to the highest placed team in the SR comp. 🙁

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 26) : stil, have they won anything, did they won al their matches? If they win us on saterday fine they deserve it but if they don’t then Boland deserves it more than them. I am not sure of this but if I can remeber correctly the Bulls won it in 2009 for winning the super 14 and cc

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 27) : that’s not what i have said but look at both comps not just at the one and if the teams are close in cc then the one doing better in the super rugby should get it, it is the more difficult comp.

  • @BR (Comment 29) : So then no team from the 1st Div or Varsity Cup or our Springbok 7s side should qualify for the team of the year award because they didn’t play in both competitions???

@BR (Comment 28) : Without even going to look I can tell you that that is not correct. Either the Bulls won it for winning the S14 or the Blue Bulls won it for winning the CC.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 34) : for the lions it was pretty much the same team that played, I could go with that system if none of the players that played super rugby played cc cup , now they are getting credit for doing well against weakend teams with their almost full strenght squad. Is that truly fair.

  • @BR (Comment 35) : No, because the MTN Golden Lions don’t play in the SR comp and their senior side the MTN Lions don’t play in the CC.

While they are both open age group sides they are 2 different levels of competition.

It would cause a major skewing of the votes in favour of the big 5 that get to play SR and Premier Div CC over sides like UCT who have been nominated.

  • @BR (Comment 19) : I don’t think any of the team performed well enough in the SR to say that they should get the award. The Lions on the other hand has consistantly improved during the year and ended at the top of the CC log. I just feel they deserve it and you can’t give it to a WP team that could not win against them once in the CC.

  • @BR (Comment 36) : I still think the Lions are the team that performed the best this year. Every other team under performed. Even if we win the Finals, they were the better team during the CC and performed better during the entire comp. The Sharks got to the final and therefore deseves to be their and deserve their go at the Cup, but the Lions were the better team in the comp and I think overall deserves the award.

  • Rugby players dont care about silly awards like this. Yes SA Player of the year counts but the rest are just for the media and sponsors. Beleive me the players themselves know who is derserving of what awards in each category, same as all somewhat intelligent supporters.
