An interview with French newspaper L’Equipe quotes Fred Michalak as saying he’d like to return to France to resurret his international career.
Michalak fell out of favour with previous French coach Marc Lievremont, who felt that the mercurial flyhalf was a little too erratic and unpredictable to fit into his plans. With Lievremont having fallen on his sword, though and former test winger Philippe Saint-Andre taking over as French coach, Michalak apparently feels there may be the opportunity to add to his 54 test caps, but also realises that his chances of a recall will be far better if he’s to play his domestic rugby in France.
Michalak’s current Sharks deal is set to run until about the middle of next year and according to the L’Equipe interview, he is unlikely to explore a renewal in Durban if one were to be offered. It’s important to note, though, that according to the current information available, Michalak is not saying that he plans to leave the Sharks earlier than he would have anyway, in terms of his current contract.
We’ll follow up with some contacts in France and try to get some more clarity on this one as well.

my favourite ever Michalak moment has to be when Andy Capp referred to him as “the icon of Toulon”… said in such a way to try and force the two words to rhyme.
Funny, though, that Fred has only ever played for Toulouse, which is quite some way from the Riviera…

I cant see Fred making the test side. He doesnt have the pace he once did to take the gap. and France need stability at 10 to control the madness that surrounds him.

i think we can do without him actually…we must give the youngsters a go…lambie must be the 10 with jordaan as his back up…or even jordaan @ 10 and lambie @ 12…that will sort out our issue in the centres…ludik playing well @ 15 for the sharks…time to blood local!!!

He also cost you a place in the CC final a few years ago when he played for the Cheetahs.

@robdylan (Comment 16) : Based on I don’t think we need him in Durban. I know it’s the professional era and all that stuff, but mark my words JLP will be one of those few players who plays SR for all 5 franchises.
He has done very little while in Durban and what he has done hasn’t been great. I know he’s had limited oppertunity but that is because he is surplus to requirements, we could use that money to keep youngsters.
We need to Force Plum to play his youngsters. And while we have Michalak available if we HAVE to play an import then I’d play him ahead of JLP.

Then I would send JLP on his way and pay the money to keep Jordaan.
