The papers are today abuzz with talk about the future of the Bok coaching job, with the Cape press having uncovered a source prepared to reveal that Allister Coetzee is the frontrunner for the job, with Rassie Erasmus also lined up for a senior role with SARU.
The potential exodus of two of their most senior coaching staff will, according to the report, open the door for current Bok forwards coach, Gary Gold, to return to Western Province in a role similar to the one that Erasmus currently holds. Major reshuffles on the cards, it would seem and again bear in mind that this is all really just speculation at this stage.
Gold is not the only Bok assistant coach likely to lose his position in the national hierarchy, though…. Am I alone in wondering what Dick Muir will do with his time now that his tenure at national level appears to be coming to an end?
One thing that’s for sure is that he won’t be heading back to the Lions. Muir’s stint as Director of Rugby (and Super Rugby head coach) up in the City of Gold could hardly be described as a roaring success, with John Mithcell taking over all of his real duties after just 6 months and an acrimonious legal battle apparently under way to wind up the arrangement.
Now I realise that there’s a hell of a lot that would need to be sorted out in order for this to happen, but am I the only one who would not be completely averse to the idea of Muir returning to the Sharks in some capacity? It strikes me that we have a real disjoint between our junior and senior rugby structures at the moment and with his proven record of identifying and nurturing junior talent, there must surely be something sensible that Muir could be doing to improve matters for the Sharks? This is aside from the very basic argument that the last time we had a backline that actually looked like anything was when Muir was running the show…
What do you think? Crazy idea, or could there be some merit?

Anything to get the backline going! If that is what it is going to take, then so be it… If only we could see into the future?
Muir is more than welcome to come back if you ask me.
Problem is, how do we fit him into the current structures and how will he get on with the current personalities?
Strong rumours at the time he left that he and Rodulf were not seeing eye to eye…
Damn! Here I thought u were talking about Frans Steyn!! 😆
@robdylan (Comment 3) : That is why I don’t see it happening. I would happily be wrong though.
If Mr Muir can give the backline a makeover, he has my vote.
@robdylan (Comment 3) : Well give him oom rudi’s job, I am sure he will contract more telling personnel to the Sharks setup.
@Ice (Comment 4) : I am sure Rob would refrain from posting that article 🙂 hehe
The last time the Sharks backline were really on fire, was under Muir’s coaching…
Replace Rudolf with Muir! As easy as that! 😈
@Uli (Comment 7) : Snap!
Not so sure about this. The Bok backline hasn’t exactly been on fire the last 4 years? 🙄
@Ben (Comment 9) : You reckon Rudolf’s buddies would do that?
@war1 (Comment 12) : Which buddies are you referring to?
@Pokkel (Comment 11) : Surely that is because of the 10 man rugby that the previous coach thought was the way to play.
@Ben (Comment 13) : The ones that gave him the job in the first place.
Dick to take over from Rudolf, and Rudolf to be in charge of conditioning and fitness at the union. It’s easy to associate Dolf only with Kamp Kaaldraad and our disastrous player procurement program, but remember that as coach he took a (largely no-name at the time) Sharks team that was languishing around the bottom of the Superrugby table to two Currie Cup and one Superrugby finals. All this within his first 6 months, largely by focusing on fitness and discipline, rather than being friends with the players.
Just trying out some out-of-the-box thinking here…
I think people have short memories…Muir didnt exactly get our backline going…he just picked attacking and creative players! The Bok backline hasnt exactly been running slick efficient moves now have they? So if he did come back (unlikely) i would shunt him to work with the junior sides so that he can get fresh ideas from the youngsters…yes coaches do need refreshing too! If i look at the work Shaun Erasmus has done with the Glenwood and Collegians backline…would he be a bad option? He is already on the payroll
Stark raving mad imo. I would not have Dick closer than a thousand kilometers from ANY coaching job, let alone the Sharks. 🙄
@Silver Fox (Comment 18) : Agreed. Not coaching. But I do think he has an eye for spotting youthful talent. His job should be behind the scenes, not on the pitch.
@Culling Song (Comment 16) : largely by focusing on fitness and discipline, rather than being friends with the players.…. hey, isn’t that what John Mitchell did with the Lions?
@robdylan (Comment 20) : Where’s the “light going on above John Plumtree’s head” button?
@Ice (Comment 4) : same thoughts I had 😉
@Culling Song (Comment 21) : that button is broken…
All I know is that I want Dolf far away from the Sharks recruitment policies and that something needs to be done about our backline.
Also, I think its time the Sharks look further into replacing Bashford and HRE. We have been average as they come at the back for a while now.
I would prefer some new blood at the Sharks and perhaps even look outside of SA.
I still think Brendon Venter would be great but I doubt it would happen.
@Ice (Comment 4) : I thought he was going to mention the lovechild. 🙂
@KSA Shark © (Comment 26) : hahahahahaha!!!!! Dick was the last thing on my mind when I saw the heading!
@Ice (Comment 27) : 😯
@Charlie (Comment 8) : Spot on and Muir was NOT shy to go look for youngsters at the clubs, JPP is a case in point.
the sharks need a young up and coming coach who has got new ideas for the game plan and not the old call back the past rugby brain as the sharks found themselves playing this year.
@Ice (Comment 27) : 😯 😯 😳
@Pokkel (Comment 28) : @KSA Shark © (Comment 31) : MUIR!!!! Jinne. :blush:
@John Galt (Comment 24) :Why Sean Everitt is still not involved is beyond me, he was an awesome center with a great step in his day. HE should be our backline coach.
@Ice (Comment 32) : 😆 😆
@KSA Shark © (Comment 33) : Agreed
@Ice (Comment 32) : Jy will MEER he?!?!?!?! 😯 😯 😯
@Pokkel (Comment 25) : NOOOOO00000oooooo!!! not Venter PLEASE!!!!!
@Pokkel (Comment 28) : @KSA Shark © (Comment 31) :

@KSA Shark © (Comment 36) :

Any fresh ideas, as opposed to the simple, repetitive style of rugby advocated by Dolfie and Plumtree would be a great improvement.
@KSA Shark © (Comment 36) :

I’d agree with the others who made the same point – please keep Dick away from our backline! He sounds like a decent talent scout though, going on what others have said.
Addressing a another point in the article: I read in some Q/A or press release that AC wants to win silverware with WP before moving on? He didn’t seem very interested in the Bok job during that interview
@Big Fish (Comment 40) :
Are you back in SA yet? Did you get to see the final?
@KSA Shark © (Comment 37) : He’d certainly liven up post-match interviews and press releases 😀
@Big Fish (Comment 40) : Talking of Dick, how was San Francisco? 😈
@vanmartin (Comment 42) : Wasn’t that interview before the CC semi-final? I think Coetzee thought this was his year. 😛
@Culling Song (Comment 45) :
@Culling Song (Comment 45) : From the SA Capital to the World Capital. 😯 BF knows where to hang out. 😛 😉
@KSA Shark © (Comment 46) : You may be right come to think of it.
It may end up being a looooong stay at WP 😈
@KSA Shark © (Comment 48) :
😈 😆
@Culling Song (Comment 45) :
😈
@Culling Song (Comment 45) : I wonder if he wore flowers in his hair. Fish?
@Ice (Comment 27) : Dick was the last thing on my mind whistles…
@KSA Shark © (Comment 48) :

Oh man, you comedians are sooo funny! 👿 😆
Still in the US – only leaving on Sunday, so thankfully was spared watching another Sharks choke.
Spending all of Saturday working the streets of San Frabcisco – and no, there won’t be flowers in my admittedly thin hair, nor will I be wearing tie-dies, sandals or any other items from wpw’as wardrobe. 😉
@Ice (Comment 27) : ok, too much info there 😯
@Big Fish (Comment 55) : But if you want to wear flowers in your hair you can rent a wig, and an outfit, from villagepeople . com.
@Salmonoid (Comment 57) : 😆
‘Spending all of Saturday working the streets of San Frabcisco’
You need money that desperately? 🙄
Maybe we can collect some money for you for a plane ticket home. 😈
Eish! I am going into hiding for a while…. 😆
Ok its official: Comedy hour between 3 and 4 😉
@Franshark (Comment 61) : Comedy? Having Big Fish working as a rentboy is hardly a laughing matter… 😆
@Ice (Comment 60) :
You created this monster!
@Pokkel (Comment 59) : Maybe we can trade; send over two Province supporters in exchange for getting BF back… 😆
@Culling Song (Comment 64) : Any specific 2?
@Culling Song (Comment 64) :
Good idea. Brokeback mountaineer Province supporters are a dime a dozen.
@Culling Song (Comment 64) :
@Ice (Comment 60) : Think before you Submit Ice! 😆
@Salmonoid (Comment 65) :
definitely Wes 😈
Who else?
@Salmonoid (Comment 65) : Going to be hard to whittle it down to only 2; there’s bound to be tons of volunteers
@Pokkel (Comment 69) :
And Claytie off coarse with his ‘ready made’ Barbie outfit. 😈 😉
@Pokkel (Comment 69) : Morne for getting his bloody jinx wrong!!!
@Ice (Comment 72) :
Sounds good to me!
@Pokkel (Comment 63) : PLEASE!!! No photos of the monster. 😆
@Pokkel (Comment 71) : 😆 😆 😆
@KSA Shark © (Comment 74) : 😉
I turn my back for just a few minutes…
@robdylan (Comment 77) :
Sorry Boss. Ice started it! 😳
@robdylan (Comment 77) : This is not the thread to turn your back on.
@Salmonoid (Comment 79) :
Comment of the day!
Yes, YES, YES and Finally YESSSS 😈
@Salmonoid (Comment 79) : Bwhahahahahahahahahahaha
😆 😆 😆 😆
@dawj (Comment 81) : Okay I don’t know you well enough to run with that comment so I’ll just leave it at that. 🙂
@KSA Shark © (Comment 83) :
I was also wondering where that one is headed!
@ Comments 81 and 83:
Just to clarify; i want Dick in (no pun intended)
@dawj (Comment 85) : Given the current mood on the site that is the BRAVEST comment of the day. 😆
@KSA Shark © (Comment 86) : well said…
Please don’t tell any Bulls whats going on here, we’ll have Steve and Joost on us soon 😉
@Franshark (Comment 88) : 🙂
No Dick Muir.
@Honey Badger (Comment 90) : Very Safe post that. 😉
when will the new bok coach be assaign?
@Ice (Comment 27) :
Bless me father for i have sinned .. its been … o dam im not catholic …. 😆
Dick and Campese together again could work 💡
@sharktooth (Comment 92) :
technically the old one is still coach ….
@KSA Shark © (Comment 91) : 😆
What about Deon Kayser for specialist backline coach? He was involved, not sure in what capacity, a while ago…
@SharksRTB (Comment 97) : He is busy getting his coaching levels at the moment and is nearly there so I think there is a plan for him…well hopefully. Kayser, Shaun Everitt and Shaun Erasmus should hopefully move up the ranks soon…
@Ice (Comment 4) : *tears*..me too! Def dont think Dick should be coaching we need David Campese back.
@Just a Fan (Comment 99) : you gonna become a Cheetahs supporter when Steyn returns? 🙂
@robdylan (Comment 100) : Van Zyl,Goosen,Steyn and Ebersohn…not bad hey….
@Salmonoid (Comment 79) : I know its late but you deserve a high five for that post.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 102) :
Where are the pics from the Barbie party?
@robdylan (Comment 100) : My heart will always be Black and White….but I may have to be a closet supporter 😎
@Salmonoid (Comment 79) : 😀 😀 😀 😀
@Salmonoid (Comment 79) : You’ve just forced me to add a new category to the Sharksworld Award nominations – blogger of the year! Classic!
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 102) : 😎
@Pokkel (Comment 103) : I managed to make it to Mornes place and instead had a brandy party.
Was nice spending some time in high society 😈
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 108) :
Damn. I was looking forward to seeing what you look like in pink! 🙁 😉
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 108) : high society and being high is not the same thing. 🙂
@KSA Shark © (Comment 110) : 😆 😆
@Pokkel (Comment 109) : That comment bothers me.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 112) : No need to worry, Pokkel’s not gay. I have some concerns over his boyfriend though… 😈
@Ice (Comment 27) : I am sure po-Cock is still in Dicks mind and would probably need a break 😉
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 112) :
