Western Province have today announced the signing of Joe Pietersen who returns from a spell at French Top 14 side Bayonne.

Pietersen who joins up with the DHL Stormers pre-season conditioning squad on 1 December has signed a 2 year deal with the Cape franchise and is sure to add value to their star studded backline.

He is comfortable at fullback and wing and has in the past covered flyhalf which should come in handy considering WP/Stormers have a habit of going through flyhalves as often as Deon Stegmann’s disappearing acts during matches.

  • This is a good signing as Connie is getting on now and Aplon is our only other fullback. 😎

Hows about signing some decent props there gents?? πŸ™„

If you have Dewaldt, Gary, JdJ, Aplon and Pietersen, that’s 7 smallish players on the park.

Sorry I forgot to include Brok and JC.

Jokes. That’s 5 out of 7 smaller guys in the line. They will be exciting on attack but what about D. Any concerns there?

  • I must say though, I was always impressed with Joe. At the time he left province I would have liked it had he come to the Lions then. I still beleive he could fit in at the Lions setup quite nicely, it will be a long season, and a reasonably big suqad is going to be imperative.

  • @Greg (Comment 24) : Some Lions questions:

What do you think SR has in store for Mapoe, Murray and possibly even Mjekewu?

Also is Doppies going to hold his own at 13?

Michael Bondesio isn’t a rated player but he’s done an excellent job for the Lions. Is Ross Cronje automatically the benchwarmer or is there someone else to push him?

Steve mentioned that there is talk of a centre with provincial experience joining the Lions. Have you heard anything?

  • @beet (Comment 25) :

Mapoe and Murray seem to have been favored over a few other players at the start of the season . if that is still the situation we will have to wait and see . Im a big Hollenbach fan so as long as he plays 12 im happy .

RE : Doppies . i think he did well in the few games he played 13 this year . Plus he is an extra fetcher on the park so i recon he would start . my 1st choice 12/13 would be doppies/Hollenbach . Murray on the bench . Mapoe on the Bench/Wing .

RE : Bondesio . i think you tend to go with the player that has been in the setup the longest if its a 50/50 call like this .

Dont think we need any more centers … another lock or 2 might be nice ..

  • @beet (Comment 25) : Depth and options are once again going to be important in next years competition, for all squads, bearing in mind that the comp is going to be suspended while the tri nations happens, so those players involved in tri nations are going to be playing a lot of rugby. With that in mind, and given there may be one or two Lions players involved, I believe both Murray and Mapoe will be well used, assuming no injury recurrences. Mjekevu I am not sure about, I personally enjoy seeing him play, he is pretty quick, which I enjoy, but doesn’t seem – in the eyes of the coaching staff – to have made the step up s SR level.

Doppies has done well at 13, despite a lot of reservations, I certainly think he will hold his own next year.

Michael is not rated by whom? I rate him! He made a big step up when Jano left, and has had a pretty decent season. I don’t think Cronje is a shoe in for the bench, we will also have Whestley Moolman, Eddie Bredenhann , and I think Rudi Paige will still be in the mix, although he didn’t really grab the opportunity this year when Michael sat out a game or two.

I don’t have any inside info, unfortunately, so no, no idea on any new centres.

In an interview I read on 365 Mitchell mentions that he looks forward to Ross keeping Bondesio on his toes and goes on to say no player is assured of a starting spot ..

So I guess he may warm the bench but there are others looking to spoil the party.

My backline for the Super15 would be as follows.

    V Rensberg

Wow just realized we are looking thin at wing now..
