In a morning dedicated to news about Sharks prop Eugene van Staden, we can reveal that contrary to earlier reports, he has not been released from his Sharks contract and will return to Durban in time for the new season.
We’ve just received the following clarification directly from Sharks Commercial Director Rudolf Straeuli:
“Eugene is only on loan until the end of December. Biarritz had an emergency due to Eduard’s injury and John Plumtree felt that Eugene needed some game time.
He will be back for January pre-season training.”
Hope that settles the matter.

Huzzah! 2 Good news stories in two days. Sharks are on a roll!
Hallo people 😉
Well that settles it then. Good news indeed!
Nice.
Hand him the 17 jersey whenever he’s fit. Every time. The ideal bench prop.
Sharks definitely have very good front-rowers, starting and in terms of depth.
honestly though,still say it would’ve been for the best if he were to stay,reckon it’s time to bring in the next generation,perhaps with one eye post 2015,honestly don’t see Beast,Jannie and Eugene aint no youngster,so all 3 will probably have left the Sharks after 2015. Herbst and Chadwick more than held their own in the CC,Schonert was a pillar for the u21s and watch young Allan Dell become a star
So Invisible Man has been announced as captain for the Bulls with Meisiekind as second in charge. 🙄
Good luck Bulle! 😈
@Ludz (Comment 5) :
If you start a ‘rebuilding’ process when you aren’t winning, you’ll be rebuilding forever.
It should always be the best possible player starting. Herbst & Chadwick playing Vodacom Cup rugby is not a bad thing. They’ll get their opportunities while they mature.
@Pokkel (Comment 6) :
Hahaha! What a joke.
No doubt all part of the plan to prevent Spies from being dropped (and rightfully so) from the Springboks.
@Ludz (Comment 5) : Why are you fixated with what happens after 2015? I want the Sharks to win in 2012! And in 2013 and in 2014 and so on and so on. A team must play their best at all times and this will inevitably be a team with a mix of experience and promising talent. I do however agree that Plumtree over the last 2 seasons has shown an astonishing reluctance to blood younger players and this may come back to bite the Sharks if they pick up an injury or two…
This is very good news! I rate Eugene quite a bit but i think that he needs to be pushed more as I feel he coasted a bit this year and if he pushed himself he could make a real impact. So if Eugene takes a bench spot who else would us knowledgable fans want to see on the bench that would make a big impact when they came on??
