Sharks confirm Jacobs departure

In a statement on their official website yesterday, the Sharks confirmed the departure of centre Adi Jacobs after 8 loyal years of service to the union.

Jacobs, whose contract with the Sharks was not renewed for 2012 (in the process sparking talk that a new midfield signing might be on the cards) left Durban last night to return to his family home in Kraaifontein and will presumably make a statement at some later stage regarding his future plans, which are currently not known. At only 31 years of age and in good physical nick, one would think that Jacobs would have plenty to offer still from a playing perspective and Sharksworld already knows of at least two big-name foreign clubs that are reportedly in the running for his signature.

The outpouring of shock and disbelief from Jacobs’ team-mates on social networking sites yesterday was an indication of how widely-respected the player is within the team; JP Pietersen said on Twitter and Facebook that he’d received “sad news this morning. My friend/dad Adi Jacobs is leaving the Sharks. All the best on your new journey.” Flyhalf Fred Michalak concurred by saying “it’s too sad to loose Adi Jacobs we are gonna miss him so much:(“, to which Odwa Ndungane responded with “ea can’t believe he won’t be playing with us anymore, very sad indeed.”

Jacobs leaves the Sharks having represented the black and white on 156 occasions, scoring 36 tries in the process. Adi, loyal Sharks fans everywhere salute you and will miss you more than we can possibly express. In an age when so many just seem to be chasing the next buck, you stuck with us through thick and (more often) thin and I feel that the way you’ve been treated by the team to whom you gave so much is an absolute disgrace.

  • Did Adi not say once that he was keen to play for the stormers?

  • Read an article a while back where Waylon said that the Sharks Management don’t treat their players with respect. He said Barrit backed him, as well as a few other Ex-Sharks players. John Smit in autobiography says that the Sharks were not very honest with him when he was trying to get a contract in 2008. I won’t be surprised if Adi went down due to some bad management and human relations skills.

  • Opinions may differ on just how good Adi currently is, but jettisoning Adi and retaining Marius Joubert is like going to battle with a sharp stick and leaving your broadsword back in the castle keep.

  • On the one hand I’m pissed at Streauli for this on the other hand it makes reasonable business sense.

Why contract a player if the coach persists in NOT selecting that player? You can’t pay a guy for sitting around doing nothing because the coach can’t see the quality the guy has.

  • I always rated Adi as an impact player. We should have kept him and got rid of Bosman and Joubert. Those two have been spectacular…in the way they’ve failed to impress.

Our best period was when we backed the youth of Kankowski, Barrit, Murray, Daniel, Steyn and JP. We looked sharp and hungry and we need that again. Back the youth, they’ll motivate the older guys again.

He has been disrespected and forced to play second fiddle behind clearly inferior players.
He goes with his head held high and I suspect he’ll also have the last laugh.
One thing’s for sure: after playing no more than 10 mins a game for the last 2 years, there’s plenty of running still left in those legs.

  • I know this is an article about Adi Jacobs, but I think we can draw parallels between the story of Waylon Murray and this one, and what Adi must be going through. This I got from an article in SARugby
“It cut deeply to feel rejected and unwanted by the team I grew up wanting to play for, especially after I thought I’d proved my aptitude,’ he says. ‘At the end of my time at the Sharks I was constantly doubting my ability. I had a defeatist mindset. Mentally I was gone. When your confidence is shot the harder you try, the worse you make your situation. I knew it was time for a fresh start, but leaving Durban, my mom and my brother especially, was the hardest career decision I’ve ever had to make”

    Brad Barrit says:
‘I can relate to what Waylon went through just before he left the Sharks. You want to feel like you’re rated and when that validation isn’t there you start to question yourself.

“To bounce back from serious injury and that type of rejection in the way he has speaks of his character and immense talent. I’ve seen players go through what he has and never be the same again”

    On John Mitchell
“He is the type of coach I respond to – brutally honest(something o fear the Sharks are not) in his assessment of your performance but you know it’s because he cares and wants to ensure you are improving”

  • I’m a bit surprised Adi Jacobs has been with the Sharks for 8 years.

It didn’t feel nearly that long. Probably because he’s hardly played.

Feels like only a few years ago that he played alongside Ettienne Botha in the Bulls midfield.

If Olivier wasnt VC it would be a no brainer of Venter/Sadie midfield. Kirchner will most probably end up back at 15…he is solid without being spectacular there.

I think his tackling technique and commitment on D are what need most urgent attention. He clearly doesn’t enjoy the first time tackling stuff esp when it’s front on. A bigger stronger player in a few months time with a different mindset, could be a different beast altogether 🙂

However you’ve said you enjoy a playmaker 12 and then back him for 12 when he’s the guy who feeds off a playmaker. He likes to hog the ball. Where he has gotten a lot better tho, is his offloads in the tackle, usually after he breaks the line – this helps continuity a lot.

Any Sharks backline with Adi in it was vastly more potent than one without him.

  • I feel bad on how the Sharks has treated an awsome guy like Adi.

However, I am trying to be realistic here. The choice between Adi and MJ is clear. Adi is the better option. And I support the unhappiness on MJ’s inclusion over Adi

BUT – I feel that neither of them is the answer to our problems on centre. The Sharks will have to come with a better option – so let’s hope if and when they sign, that this guy is a phenomenal talent at 13. Because THAT is what we need.

Both MJ and Adi are older now. Adi will not get gametime, we have seen this. Yes he should have been released sooner and he was hard done by, but that happened and we cannot change it. But by keeping him would not be the answer either.

As someone told me once before when I said I would have liked to see one of my legends just one more time :” get over it, he is gone”…

That said, I wish Adi all the best and I hope he gets something really worthwhile. I will certainly miss the awsome guy he is at the Sharks Ladies Breakfast! Go well, Adi! 😉

Marius Joubert’s contract didn’t come up for renewal. Didn’t they sign him on until 2013?

It might well be a case of them getting rid of both if they had the opportunity.

My opinion is Adi Jacobs made a very useful player off the bench, but he was never a great starting option.

He should’ve been retained however. Appears to have an excellent attitude & had some value as an impact player.

Jlp said he didn’t mind where he plays ,he just wants to play.

I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted how bad Marius Joubert would be for the Sharks. I was watching him play for Clermont (who won the French Top 14 btw) and he looked a more complete player then he ever was when playing in SA.

    @bergshark (Comment 84) :

I don’t believe it, but even then he’s not nearly shown enough as an attacking player on the outside to even be considered at 13.

I know I said Tim Whitehead isn’t the greatest addition, but heck he’s by far the Sharks best option in the 13 jersey. Potgieter would be way way down that list.

Haha okay. JLP is fast. Still doesn’t make him a centre though hey!

I remember back when Carlos Spencer was struggling for the All Blacks heading into the 2003 World Cup, some said he should be playing at 12. Personally couldn’t see the logic.

Same thing with JLP. He’s as much a centre as Spencer was (which he wasn’t).

The reason I say this is he has got a lot more gas than MJ and he has an eye for an opening. He just needs to learn which lines to run at the right time to play 13.

I remember him scoring a try from halfway versus the Crusaders at Twickenham – from the restart.

Still don’t think it’s as easy as simply moving into the 13 jersey. It could do more harm then good.

A player who’s already short on any real ball-skills and, if I remember correctly, spent his entire Affies career at prop?

It’s like saying they’re stupid not to try Keegan Daniel on the wing.

  • Comment 100, posted at 23.11.11 12:30:43 by bergshark Reply

  • @SheldonK (Comment 98) :

I’d say positions definitely matter. How often do we go through 5+ phases. Not very often.

There’s a lot more structure to backline play then you’re suggesting, that require certain types of players in certain positions.

Also why would you risk throwing away being effective off first & second phase ball?

After you go through the phases, you still aren’t likely to see Lwazi Mvovo at first-receiver, or Meyer Bosman running out on the wing. It’s not how it works.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 101) : I tend to disgaree there. if you look at the way the Ozzies and All Black play…probably the best attacking backlines. Their wings often take the ball at first or 2nd receiver. Then off 2nd phase guys like Beale and Dagg are often seen getting the ball and guys like Nonu and Ioane are most effectively used as strike runners in 2nd or 3rd phase play when they will be running at forwards not backs. Very few tries are scored off first phase unless opposition defense is sub standard.

Not saying he’s a bad coach.

Just that there are obviously issues that stop him from being a truly great coach.

If I had to name one coach who’s player-management I really liked, it would be Naka Drotske. People can say what they like about his coaching, but I can’t fault much of what he does.

After that I like the way Allister Coetzee has given his younger players a go, and think him rotating his bench (so guys like Groom & Schreuder don’t sit on the bench all season) showed that he’s willing to show a little bit of imagination.

Ludeke I think doesn’t have it in him to have long-term success. He’s riding the success created by Heyneke.

And John Mitchell obviously has his issues with player management also.

    Have a read of this:

You build a competitive Australian team – the best in a long time, win the Tri Nations, then lose 1 game at Eden Park to the All Blacks and Campo wants you fired.

Campo seems to think he knows better then people who have had actual success. Him saying ‘they’re not getting it to the wings’ says it all. He’s a glory boy. All about himself.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 159) : Super awesome 3D Pat will be on the bench. He may still make it into the starting lineup, but that only time will tell. For now he won’t displace Lem, Pieter Muller or Jouba yet.

  • The best thing that could happen is for adi to score winning try and knock out the sharks in a play off game. Plum and rudolph to then get fired. Adi to show them the middle finger.
