What’s going down in Jozi town?

A rumour that we’ve been tracking for a while seems like it may just have come to a head. Have the Golden Lions finally (and terminally) run out of money?

According to Twitter whistleblower Tank Lanning, they have, with the players told that their salaries are only guaranteed until the end of December. Lanning reckons they’re all looking for other places to play, although Sharksworld can’t find anyone to confirm that, whether on or of the record.

What we do know, though, is that the Lions are in BIG financial poo and even if Tank has his timing wrong on this story, it’s going to be a case of when, not if, the Lions house of cards comes tumbling down.

More on this as we get it.

  • This sounds a bit unbelievable from a side who have just won a trophy and also recently got a new investor.

  • Anyway, a few of those Lions players could find jobs rather easily if they wanted to go elsewhere.

Michael Rhodes & Franco van der Merwe would make a good locking combination at the Cheetahs.

CJ van der Linde is still one of the best TH’s in SA, and would be a great fit in that Bulls front-row.

Elton Jantjies would solve the Stormers flyhalf woes.

and Jaco Taute could choose any of the 4 franchises he feels like playing for.

Derick Minnie would be a good fit at either the Bulls or Sharks as well.

GLRU haven’t been totally open and honest about their financial situation, and the amount of players they had on their roster – alongside still paying Dick Muir a salary until recently hasn’t given me much faith.

I do think they should fall under the control of SARU if any of this ends up being true.

Has been way too many jokers running the show. Don’t think I’ve seen a sports team managed so badly ever.

Tank’s sauce is grasping at straws. I don’t know who it is, but yea. If things were really that bad, the Union would have folded before December came.

Besides, my sauce has a little more credibility and the Union is not out of cash or in any sort of trouble.

    Well it’s close.

I sort of dislike the Bulls because all their supporters (and some of their players) are so provincialistic. Bloody sick of it. The way their supporters act on News24 is embarrassing.

And then the Lions because for the past 10 or so years they’ve played with no passion. It’s always felt like their players are just in it so that another team may offer them a contract… Nobody cares about the Lions.

But hopefully that will change

Also the whole thing about having plenty of potential Springboks in the Lions team because they won a Currie Cup kind of annoys me.

I mean a guy like Michael Killian being talked about as a Springbok winger, when he’s not even a great finisher at CC level… makes my blood boil πŸ˜†

However… the Currie Cup can no longer be used to measure the strongest team as others miss the majority of their best players who are with the Springboks.

By the time the semi-finals come around, teams that aren’t affected have built up some momentum, and we all know how important home advantage is in finals rugby also.

If the Lions do well in SR, I’ll be taking notice

Problem is I’ve seen the Lions finish the season well before… and it’s more the consistency I’m worried about. I mean they got crushed 53 – 19 by the Cheetahs! In Jo’burg as well.

A couple of upset wins means little towards national selection.

Individual performances will obviously be taken into account though! But when the team isn’t performing, there tends to be a negative on players who might otherwise have made it.

I’m just hoping for positive displays. With all the SA derbies, somebody has got to lose, and the Lions have the least depth for a number of reasons. Maybe they’ll prove me wrong πŸ˜†

Agreed . But i get the idea that Mitch is bringing around a lot of change . For now we are hanging onto our players . from my understanding most of the players wants to be in jozi .

The two loose ends that needs to be tided up is Taute and Jantjies . but my understanding is that both of them went to the Union to start negotiations.

This is only my understanding and stories ive heard . So might not be true ..

what ive heard is that the following players rejected offers from other unions :

    Hollenbach (Sharks )
    Minnie ( Bulls)
    Strauss (Bulls)
    Taute (Stormers)
    jantjies (Stormers)

again thats what i heard and it might not be true .

but those are core players who are willing to stay at the team .

  • The Lions arent bankrupt. Just read this:

The Lions’ manager flies to Baghdad to watch a young Iraqi play rugby, is suitably impressed and arranges for him to come over to Gauteng.

Two weeks later the Lions are 18-6 down to the Cheetahs with only 20 minutes left to play. The manager gives the young Iraqi winger the nod and on he goes.

The lad is a sensation, scores 4 tries in 20 minutes and wins the game for the Lions. The fans are delighted, the players and coaches are delighted and the media love the new star.

When the player comes off the pitch he phones his mum to tell her about his first day in Super 14 Rugby.

“Hello mum, guess what?” he says “I played for 20 minutes today, and we were 18-6 down but I scored 4 tries and we won! Everybody loves me, the fans, the media, they all love me!”

“Wonderful,” says his mum, “Let me tell you about my day. Your father got shot in the street and robbed; your sister and I were ambushed, raped and beaten; your brother has joined a gang of looters and all while you were having such a great time playing rugby”

The young lad is very upset. “What can I say mum, but I am so sorry.”

“Sorry?!!! Sorry?!!!’ shrieks his mum, “It’s your fault we all moved to Jo’Burg in the first place!”

Problem I have with that is…

The Lions are made up of quite a few players who can be called ‘journeyman’.

Have to question whether they played above themselves during the Currie Cup.

It does show us though that a close-knit team of average players can beat a thrown-together team of players we’d deem more talented.

Shows how valuable preparation is… which is where NZ has been getting it right, and we’ve been getting it wrong.

    Sharks & Bulls recruit well.

And WP & the Cheetahs turn out the vast majority of SA’s best players…

Can’t quite say the same for the Lions unfortunately. They can’t hold onto their best, and don’t sign anybody with a big reputation. Could be the $$ situation.

Let me put it this way.

They did bloody well to come together during the CC… But SR is again another step up, and those performances aren’t good enough to win consistently at SR level.

I’m looking for a 3-4 win season from the Lions. Outside of that if they can run a few teams close I’ll be happy for them.

The best is the past tours of the All Blacks to South Africa. Great to read. Excellent blog. Just not enough bloggers on at one time. Otherwise would blog there most of the time. If they can hold onto your players, you’re right… 3 years from now the Lions could be a heck of a team.

Problem is I’m not so sure they can or will.

I mentioned last night that in the NFL they use the term ‘franchise players, franchise QB etc.’ to describe a player who you can ink into your team each week.

We may differ on who those players are for the Lions, but they need to hold onto them.

I’m thinking: JC Janse van Rensburg, Pat Cilliers, Derick Minnie, Michael Rhodes, Josh Strauss, Warren Whiteley, Elton Jantjies, Lionel Mapoe, Jaco Taute… and CJ vd Linde, Franco van der Merwe & Doppies being the older ones.

If they can build around those for 3 years, I agree the Lions could actually give it a genuine shot in Super Rugby.

But it’s not happening in 2012, sorry  They’ll be lucky not to finish last in the SA conference.

And then they stole Jano Vermaak from you guys & have Francois Hougaard.

Plus they’ve strengthened their squad elsewhere with players like Sadie, Engelbrecht and having a great junior structure (particularly U21’s) means plenty of talented players coming through like Francois Venter, Arno Botha etc. who will hopefully prove themselves.

Sure, they have players with individual brilliance, but it’s the close-knit culture & the structure in their play that gets them over the line.

So a few key players really will make all the difference.

And Johann Sadie only played in 1 game against the Lions, where he scored the only try, in a game they won 28 – 26. If I remember correctly, the Lions first loss.

    @CoffeeshopBok πŸ˜‰ (Comment 44) : @robdylan (Comment 50) :

You CAN say that there are persistent rumours that the Lions are in financial trouble – that there are rumours is a fact and that they have been circulating for some time, largely in the wake of the termination of the disastrous liaison with Mr Gumede, is also a fact.

    What you CANNOT say as a statement of fact, based on hearsay, is that;
β€œ What WE DO KNOW, though, IS that the Lions are in BIG financial poo and even if Tank has his timing wrong on this story, it’s going to be a case of when, not if, the Lions house of cards comes tumbling down.”

Be that as it may, the Lions may well have financial, or at least liquidity concerns. The facts that are in the public domain however mitigate against that.
-The Lions major sponsor MTN signed a three year deal in March 2011 – so until March 2014
-The union hosted a home CC semi and final – and were getting crowds in excess of 30 000 during the latter part of the season – this has to have been good for cashflow.
-The Lions actually own Ellis Park so should have a fairly substantial asset on their balance sheet, as opposed to having a lease over the stadium.

One thing that is certain in rugby is that the wheel turns and to write the Lions off permanently after a recent period of abysmal administration would be foolhardy. It is not that long ago that the Bulls were the whipping boys of super rugby and a few years earlier the Lions (or Transvaal as they then were) were supplying the bulk of the β€˜95 World Cup winning team.

For the record I am Natal born and bred and suffering through the indignity of the 80’s, when we simply could not win a play off game against NOFS to get out of the B section, knocked any rugby arrogance out of my system. Even in the 70’s when we played in the A section we were not very competitive save for 1980 when we managed to beat NTvl at Loftus and come close against the British Lions at kings Park.

    Over the last few years I have developed a soft spot for the Lions for reasons that are not relevant to this debate and would like to see them do well. IMO a lot is starting to go right under Kevin de Klerk who is a rugby man through and through. In 2011 the Lions;
    – Craven Week side played in the β€œfinal” at CW
    – U19’s won the CC
    – U21’s lost their CC semi to eventual winners the Bulls at Loftus
    – UJ topped the log in the VC but lost a home semi and played in the final of the Club champs
    – finished top of the North section log in the Vodacom cup
    – won the Currie Cup
The progress that is being made at the support structure level is what informs my view that the Lions are on an upward trajectory but it won’t happen in a year.

  • The Golden Lions Rugby Union released a statements on Thursday countering the claims of financial turmoil as posted on twitter.

    False Allegations against GLRU
β€œJohannesburg, 08 December 2011… The Golden Lions Rugby Union received notification this morning via social networking website that a rumour has been circulating that the Golden Lions Rugby Union are bankrupt and can only afford to pay their players’ salaries until the end of the month.

The initial rumours, circulated via an individual’s blog website stated that the information was received from a β€œreliable source”, but would not name the source.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union would like to reiterate the comments that β€œthey are malicious rumours” made on Twitter in response to numerous queries from supporters.

”Statements such as those made by this individual are incredibly damaging as they create an unnecessary sense of unease and panic amongst those within the Union structures. We will not tolerate this and are seeking legal advice”, President of the GLRU Mr. Kevin de Klerk said.

Further statements in this individual’s blog stated β€˜given that the Lions have been in financial poo for a while, I can well believe this news. After all the previous investors did not pull out of the deal without reason…’

”The relationship with the previous equity partners did not work out, but the matter was closed on 28 June 2011 and we will not rehash or reopen that discussion”, de Klerk said.

The closing line of the article states β€˜that John Mitchell and his team performed despite this is the amazing, yet slightly sad, side to the story’.

The fact of the matter is that the team performed so well due to the stability and continuity experienced within the Lions. The coaching staff and players received support from management and administrators in every way possible, and the results speak for themselves.

”The new equity partners, in conjunction with the existing management, have made numerous changes within the Union’s structures and we are in a better position at the moment than we have been in quite some time. The Union is growing in both strength and stature and rumours such as these started by one individual can potentially undo much of the good work done over the past few months.

”This matter is now considered closed and until we have had formal discussions with our legal team on the way forward, we will not be commenting any further”, Mr. de Klerk concluded.”

You will also note that I used the word “probably” and would not presume to anticipate how a court would decide on what IMO is a complex area notwithstanding your assertion that it is clear in law. i also have no idea as to what information is available and consequently whether “truth” is a defence.
in a later post i clarified for Rob that the point i wanted to make is that it could be a dangerous assertion to make in the form that it was made.
IMO the assertion that an entity is not a “going concern” is one of the most damaging that could be made and one that could have very tangible consequences for that organisation.

  • @beet (Comment 186) : I was also only a schoolboy then, distant memories of which most have faded. I remember listening to the game on the radio and catching 20 minute highlights on Topsport late on Monday night. I remember being on a cloud for days after the game….in those days Natal just did not and were never meant to beat Noord Transvaal.

Some players I remember from those days Wynand Claasen, Dirk Hoffman, Ronnie Haarhof, Mort Mortassagne, Don Spiers, Tim Cocks (Who I think lost a boot in the game and scored a try), Pete Smith, Andre Botha, Wally Watt (the fisherman with long blonde hair)

Maybe you should get Pete Smith, now with KZNRU, to recall the past and post here. Natal ended that year in third place after beating Tranvaal at Ellis Park with a last minute drop by Pete Smith.

Did I mention Cliffie Brown, he was a wing, very quick and ran on twinkle toes. He was also a model and also had the distinction of beating Naas Botha in a kicking competition from different positions on the field.

Its a bugger that the memory fades, but that was fun anyway.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 187) : if memory serves Gus Ferguson played flyhalf in the game against NTvl in 1980 – Pete will be able to confirm that one way or another. The props were probably Bennie de Klerk and Mort. Bennie was one of the strongest guys around but he hated running and would have had a heart attack if someone passed him the ball and expected him to catch it. The key guy in that loose trio was the Ozzie docter Mark Loane who played on the side of the scrum to accomodate Wynand at 8 – an outstanding rugby player and man.

  • @steve (Comment 188) : @Salmonoid (Comment 187) : Some of the names ring a bell. Obviously Andre Botha was one of those players who never seemed to miss a game. Mort Mortassagne the prop who I always remember playing alongside Kearsney Old Boy Cliffie Hopkins. My fav Natal hooker of all times Rob Hankinson but I suspect he came after 1980. Ronnie Haarhoff is another player I remember but mainly for his time alongside Roche. Des McLean, Gawie Visagie and Craig Jameson were around when I started watching but again, I don’t think they would have played in 1980. Steyn Swart, Hugh Reece and Graham Hefer are other names I can think of off the top of my head. And I actually know Greg Hamilton, the centre who played in the famous CC semi-final win against Vrystaat. I still remember the score 26-11. Also the scrumcap flyhalf Henry Coxwell. I think all these guys were around for the B-section days. πŸ˜†

  • @beet (Comment 189) : I think Mort was a fair bit older than Cliffy Hopkins – my memory may be failing but I dont remember Mort playing much after the early 80’s.
The props I associate with Mort’s time are guys like Bennie de Klerk and Wakka Basson. Cliffy Hopkins was more of the Murray Dawson and Basher Downes era. One of either Cliffy or Rob Hankinson threw the first punch against the Cavaliers in ’86.
Rob Hankinson was post 1980 in Natal. After Michaelhouse he went down to Stellenbosch – he is one of very few players to play two years SA Schools (74-75).
Gawie Visagie arrived in Dbn in ’81 (I think) but had played plenty of provincial rugby by then. He went on the bok tour to NZ that year and for some bizarre reason (along with Wynand) didnt/couldnt play in the promotion relegation game that resulted in Natal going down to the B section.
Craig Jamieson (and Henry Coxwell) matriculated at College in ’89 so were both mid 80’s stalwarts along with guys like Jonny Roche who came to natal from UCT in about ’85. He was one of a bunch of Zimbo’s who played for natal in the mid to late 80’s – guys like Tony Watson, Alan Faber and Graham Hefer.
There were also a string of guys from around the world who mostly played for DHS Old boys – the ozzies Dick Cocks, Mark Loane and Gary Pearce, Murray Mexted and a few other Kiwi’s as well as Jorge Allen the Argentine flank. Chris Butcher, who stayed out after the England tour in 1984, made a big impression at no8. England internationals Mike Teague and Peter Winterbottom also played for DHS OB’s that year. Winterbottom later played for Transvaal but I dont think he got a game for Natal.
