Stormers snap up JP du Plessis

After being forced into something of a corner in recent weeks by a glut of senior centres signing elsewhere, WP and the Stormers have finally contracted under 21 centre JP du Plessis.

Du Plessis impressed as a schoolboy in the region before heading to Australia to play rugby league in 2009. He was a member of the Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby squad this year, but failed to make his mark there and returned to Cape Town to play under 21 rugby – without a contract in midyear.

Du Plessis has been training with the Stormers squad and will now presumably stand in line to feature as backup to Jean de Villiers and Jean de Jongh.

  • Before we say he failed with the Rebels…

That was not the case. He was in his first year with them, as a 19 year old behind some very good centres including Stirling Mortlock (captain).

They then released him because he would not declare to play for Australia – he wants to be a Springbok, and because they signed James O’Connor & Kurtley Beale.

Good luck JP! This may mean the end of the road for Adi Jacobs… hopefully not though, the more depth the better.

Long as they balance the books 😆

Hey hey I never said that!

I only said that if the Sharks could sign him, he’d be their best centre 😆

Not true. The NRL pay their juniors almost nothing. I’m surprised he didn’t starve to be honest.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 7) : whatever, when he left it was reported that he was offered a “lucrative” contract.

he was even quoted saying “anyone in my position would do the same, i’m going over there to play rugby league, which will improve my skills and help me grow as a player. i still want to play in the green and gold, so i’ll come back”

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 10) :

Mostly it’s just exciting to see so many talented centres finally coming through in SA.

A shame Jaque Fourie left, otherwise we’d have had four 13’s all good enough to step into the Springbok jersey… and others like Franna Venter, JP du Plessis etc. just waiting for a chance to hopefully prove themselves.

  • Comment 11, posted at 08.12.11 11:26:00 by hendrikp Reply

  • Glad they signed up JP, now they only have to sign up his dad. JP is talented, no question about that. His KleinBoet is at Paul Roos.

My little cousin got into Paul Roos for next year, but he’s a hockey man as well I’m told.

  • Sadie was a decent enough player but you would swear the lad could walk on water, hell he wasn’t even fond of passing.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 13) : Ja Paul Roos is quite strong in hockey. My laaitie play from sunday for Boland U13 PSi and will probably play against him when we meet the Rosers next year.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 14) : remeber the Stormers vs Saders game on Newlands when he put Mossie in space? Sadie will hurt us but he wanted to much money Boet. JP is a few years youngter but he have lots of talent. His pa hire out the practis equip and I did met him at KleinGim. Excellent person and hope Rassie will use him.

  • I hope Adi still gets a chance. He’s still got a lot to offer, even if it is just as an impact player.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 25) : Oh OK. There are a few Durbies coming this way. Know of one fatty. We break that lot in rugby, hockey and cricket this year.

  • Comment 27, posted at 08.12.11 12:12:21 by PaarlBok Reply

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 24) :

I think I remember the contract only running until end of 2013.

So we only have to deal with him for 2 Super 15 campaigns, as he’s likely to be a Springbok from 2012 onwards…

Then we get him back for probably the rest of his career, so I’m thinking a golden age of WP rugby is on the horizon.

Yeah we’re not exactly proud of our sporting achievements in that part of the Cape. Heck I think Kritzinger is about the only rugby player coming out of the Durbanville area since before I can remember.

Dink JP gaan eers bietjie Voddas moet speel. Het met Stokkies Hanekom die naweek gesels en Klein Stokkies gaan vir Maties speel volgende jaar. Klein Stokkies was Sadie se kamermaat op Stellenbosch.

  • To me the words “snap up” don’t really fit.

This should have been a deal done a few months back.

Instead the time taken by Province to sign up JP should be of concern to their fans. This slow response could quite easily have gave a few other teams the opportunity to steal yet another quality centre from them. 🙄

    A different JP du Plessis.

The one you’re thinking of played 12 for the Lions U19 all season. Also made the first set of SA U20 trials.

This one played WP U21 all season, and is too old for SA U20 now.

Who knows, maybe they’ll face each other in 2012.

  • Comment 39, posted at 08.12.11 13:59:49 by hendrikp Reply

  • @beet (Comment 36) : Its Jac Fouries fault. Wish he could have been as decent as FdP & danie at the Brutes, announcing their departure at the start of the season and give the Brutes enough time to manage their player budget and poaching Sadie. Pretty sure his departure to go to Japan freed up some cash and just maybe we can end up with Steyn also.

  • @PaarlBok (Comment 40) : I was thinking the same thing. The freed up money must make Frans Steyn a legit target.

Surely he could have tried at one of the smaller unions before giving up in SA?

Q: Is Watermeyer in the top 5 12’s in SA?
    A: No.
