First test for SA for the year 2012(obviously it’s only the 3rd day of the year yet). We hope that the Protea team will begin the year better than the way they ended 2011.

For starters the team has been changed from the one that did duty in the 2nd test. Prince has done(at last IMO) enough to earn himself a place on his couch at home watching the game rather than being involved in it. Alviro Petersen has been recalled and replaces Rudolf who moves down the order to take the position of Prince. In the other change Philander comes back from injury taking the place of the only Protea player that can hold his head high after the 2nd test, De Lange taking 7 wickets in an innings.

Now the team looks like this:
Graeme Smith , Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Jacques Rudolph, Mark Boucher, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir.

Jacques Kallis is playing in his 150th game for the Proteas. Hope that this milestone will be a turning point for him as he has not been in good form this season.

On a very positive note, SA have not lost a test in six years at Newlands. Needless to say that before the last test they had not lost to Sri Lanka in SA before, but I believe that we will see a much improved performance this time around.

Also in the mean time the squad for the first 2 odi’s has been announced and the Knights batsman Dean Elgar is a new face on the Protea block. Rory Klienveldt has also earned himself a chance to shine in the 50-over version of the game after he has previously played in two t20 games for SA.
AB gets his first chance since being appointed one day captain to actually captain the team as he was injured for the odi’s against the Ausies. He also will be taking the gloves as Boucher is not part of the squad:
AB de Villiers (Nashua Titans, capt), Hashim Amla (Sunfoil Dolphins, vice-captain), Johan Botha (Chevrolet Warriors), JP Duminy (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Faf du Plessis (Nashua Titans), Dean Elgar (Chevrolet Knights), Jacques Kallis (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Rory Kleinveldt (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Morne Morkel (Nashua Titans), Wayne Parnell (Chevrolet Warriors), Robin Peterson (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Graeme Smith (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Dale Steyn (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Chevrolet Warriors).

Enjoy the cricket and don’t worry to much about waking up early as the game only starts at 10:30(SA. time)

  • I think it is a mistake to play Kallis in the ODI’s

We have a long season ahead, and it might be the ideal time for him to concentrate on the Tests and let some new blood come into things ahead of the next World Cup (which he surely will not play in).

I would have dropped Morkel for this Test and tried playing both De Lange and Philander, both of which are in amazing form. But Morkel can turn it on at any moment, so it will be interesting to watch.

  • Sri Lanka win the toss and decide to bowl on a green pitch.

SA’s seamers would have done some damage in this first session had they been able to bowl.

Smith and co will have to be careful not to throw their wickets away.

2 more runs down to third man, lankans 209/6.
    Steyn 3/52.
Chandimal is a very competent batsman,20 not out.was very good down in durban..he gets a thick edge ..! Flies over third slips head..four runs..lankans 213/6.
Steyn now throws the ball at the wickets and chandimal blocks it with his bat..steyn walks down the pitch, has some words with chandimal, collects the ball..umpire just telling him to calm down.

  • Big question now is: will sa enforce the follow-on if we bowl lankans out for less than 380? Or will they give bowlers a rest? Suppose it all depends on when that last wicket falls with them short of the 380.
Wouldve liked to have seen smith give ab the opp to go for his double ton- was looking in superb form_ his third fifty was reached in 26 balls.
