Incumbent Bok forwards coach Gary Gold was yesterday announced as the Newcastle Falcons’ new Director of Rugby.

Current Director, Alan Tait, has apparently opted to take a break from the game, leaving the door open for Gold to take over – although our understanding is that his appointment is only until the end of the current European Season in 6 months’ time. Gold’s future in South Africa is, of course, uncertain, given that Peter de Villiers is not expected to be retained as Springbok head coach when SARU confirms the situation later this month.

An incoming Bok coach would, of course, select his own assistants and it is generally pretty unlikely that a new head man would retain the services of his predecessor’s assistants.

Gold has previously spent a fair amount of time coaching in the UK, with London Irish. Speaking to Rugby Week about the move, he said, “This is an exciting challenge and I am delighted to have the opportunity to work in the Aviva Premiership. Newcastle Falcons is a big club with big ambitions and an owner who is very determined so anything is possible.”

  • Good luck to you Gary

  • If he does get involved with SA Rugby again, I hope he learns a lot from this move, and comes back better.

My personal opinion is that he stay ala Nick Mallett and never really get back into the swing of things in SA.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) : That would be a pity – I’ve always felt he got a unfair share of criticism while in the Bok post.

  • Speaking of the Boks and the Northern Hemisphere, the President of the Dutch rugby union tweeted that a match between the ‘Bokken’ and the Baa-Baas in Amsterdam is looking more and more likely to take place this year.
