Palace rebellion in the land of the Kings

With all of the team announcements taking place recently for warm-up games between the Stormers and the Lions, and the Cheetahs and The Southern Kings, I was hit by a glaring omission…Where is the Kings team? Why haven’t we heard anything from Port Elizabeth? So having some free time on my hands I decided to do a little bit of digging.

My searches revealed the following:

1. There is a happy, if somewhat overly optimistic, band of supporters in the Eastern Cape who truly believe their team should not only compete in the Super XV, but would also do very well (I will pause for your sympathetic chuckling to finish before I continue), this despite being hammered by Boland who were in turn demolished by the Stormers 2nd XV. Ahem!

2. It was, according to one exceedingly emotional and upset Kings supporter, reported in the local paper that the team to take on the Kings would comprise mainly Border players with one or two South Western Districts players making up the squad.

Now this second point explains the lack of commentary coming from the Kings region as it is usually our ‘Cheeky’ friend shouting from the rooftops about how competitive the Kings will be in these warm-up games and that it will prove that they should be in Super Rugby. No EP players means none of the antics or entertainment from Mr Watson. It also raises the big question, where are all of the Eastern Province players?

Have the Kings been dethroned? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  • If the Super rugby teams send their best players to PE, the Kings will get hammered every time, last year they did manage to beat the Bulls 6th team and almost the Lions 5th but the Cheetahs 3rd team destroyed them and they are sending a 1st team. I see a cricket score coming

Yeah, this has not received a lot of airtime..

But with the announcement kind of ‘out the bag’ – this is the only thing worth getting excited about..

What do you think the announcement is about? Which teams will partake, or whether SA might actually not be involved at all?

  • @KSA Shark Ā© (Comment 11) : @StevieS (Comment 12) : let me tell you one thing though, SARU effectively NEVER make decisions. the currie cup was reduced to six teams, darren scott asked regan hoskins “what happens when a team like the bulls finishes in the bottom half of the log, will they get relegated or will they be protected”

hoskins ummed and aahhed and eventually said they hadn’t discussed the promotion/relegation issue but will be looking into it soon…

currie cup ended and SARU never made any announcements on the issue, the unions were just told there won’t be any promotion/relegation games PERIOD! so all of Boland’s work to get to the top & win the comp was an exercise in futility šŸ™„

  • @Talent (Comment 26) : In just about any given year the KZN Schools team would have a tough time beating Border schools, we’d have an equally difficult time in a game against EP Schools. In recent years the Grahamstown boys haven’t even played for EP schools. If this region had to combine into one Craven Week team, it would be hard for me to see us beating them regularly. Then if you take away our 4 or 5* KZN schools players who learnt their fundamentals in the EC, the task is made that much harder.

    * Megatron this excludes Tom who didn’t play rugby until he arrived in Dbn.
