All to play for on Friday night – Part 2

Let’s continue our investigation of the Sharks trial match to take place tomorrow night. You can read Part 1 here.

The injury to Conrad Hoffmann has certainly blown the scrumhalf race wide open and with Charl McLeod now the only experienced and recognised number 9 in the squad, the race is on to find his understudy. Fred Michalak is an option, of course and will definitely be asked to deputise there during the season, but it is likely to be young Cobus Reinach who will stand to gain the most from Friday’s match. A good game up against McLeod could erase any lingering doubts about his readiness for rugby at this level. It’s possible that Fred Zeilinga from the under 21s could also be given a run in the trial, since he’s comfortable in either halfback position.

John Plumtree has intimated that he wants to see Pat Lambie and Michalak go head-to-head for the flyhalf jersey, making it unlikely that the latter will spend all that much time at 9 during the trial. Any of Meyer Bosman, Paul Jordaan, Zeilinga or even young Gavin Hauptfleisch could feature as a stand-in 10 should the Frenchman be asked to move one position in. My feeling is that it’s quite unlikely the Sharks will look beyond Lambie and Michalak at flyhalf, but it will be good to know who’s next in line should injury strike.

It’s in the centres that one would like to see the real strides made. We’ve heard that JP Pietersen will get a go at outside centre and it just remains to be seen how the coaches will see enough of him, Tim Whitehead, Paul Jordaan, Marius Joubert and maybe even Wandile Mjekevu and Piet Lindeque in just 80 minutes. With Bosman the only experienced inside centre left in the group, though, it’s probably a fair assumption that Whitehead and Jordaan will play more at 12 during the trial than at 13. It would also be quite unfair to not give Heimar Williams at least 20 minutes in one of the teams to see how he shapes in such company.

Sbura Sithole and Gouws Prinsloo are the names to watch out for amongst the back three; with Pietersen set for a role in midfield and Lambie earmarked for flyhalf, expect the wings and fullbacks to to Odwa Ndungane, Louis Ludik, Mwazi Mvovo and new boy Riaan Viljoen in some or other combination, for most of the campaign. The young duo, both of whom made their first Currie Cup appearances last year, could add a huge amount to the side in terms of youthful energy, but will first need to show that they can hold their own with the “grown-ups” during the trial. With Ludik expected to feature mostly at wing this season, it would be good to see him given an extended run in that position, with Viljoen and Prinsloo going head-to-head in the number 15 jerseys; don’t discount the possibility of Jaco van Tonder being thrown into the mix at some stage too, just to see if he might be another option at this level.

The trial game kicks off at 6pm on Friday at Mr Price Kings Park and is open to the public.

  • It would seem that flyhalf and the back three are fairly decided for. You gotta tak eyour chance now if you are a 9 or centre. If Jordaan, Whitehead or Pietersen can make a big impression against Joubert we might see the start of a new era in the midfield of the Sharks. Lets just hope that we do find an answer and that that answer does not end with Joubert 😕

  • @Zibbie (Comment 1) : It shows how quickly things can turn against you. Over the last couple of years we could almost choose any 9 from any province for the boks. Now it looks like we will have to start looking abroad to fill the gaps.

  • @JJR (Comment 5) : Sounds like a championship team. I would rather go for Hargreaves at 5 and Skeate on the bench though. But that backline would be something to see.

  • @Viking (Comment 7) : Difficult to choose between hargreaves and Skeate; but on last years form i would go for Skeate; but i don’t mind if they swop. Hargreaves and Skeate are very similar.

  • Obviously i didn’t include Beast…man it sucks he got injured…unfortunately these things happen. Hopefully we have him back for the last stretch to lifting the Superugby title! 🙂 Having a nice Fresh Beast coming into the team late in the tournament will be a great lift for the squad.

  • @JJR (Comment 10) :

Hargreaves is too inconsistent. He plays 1 or 2 brilliant games a season and for the rest he’s pretty mediocre. I would pick Skeate at this stage.

Man i’m still nervous bout our prop situation…we need 5 currently capable props…4 is a bit short, especially when Redlinghuys is a bit of a greenhorn.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 12) : pokkel was sooo going to say that, but since I was quite negative yesterday (irt Joubert) I thought not to say anything – but I sooo agree with you would rather have Sykes, Skeate, Janandre Marais and then Hargreaves only because I have not seen du toit

  • @beet (Comment 18) : To be honest in my opinion i don’t know how he will make it with Du toit, Bresler and his Brother there. He is in between a 4 and 5 and has also played looseforward…so he hasn’t really mastered any specific position…and i think he could do with some more weight. He’s still young….so we will see how he develops.

    1.Chadwick
    2.Bissie
    3.Jannie
    4.Sykes
    5.Skeate
    6.Keegan
    7.Alberts
    8.Kanko
    9.Fred
    10.Lambie
    11.Mvovo
    12.Whitehead
    13.JPP
    14.Ludik
    15.Viljoen

    16.Burden
    17.Herbst
    18.Hargreaves
    19.Deysel
    20.Coetzee
    21.McLeod
    22.Jordaan

I know, Odwa has the experience and he`s the safe option. I think Ludik could be the more exciting player at this stage though.

  • Why does the name Bosman and Joubert keep on popping up.

Are we not gonna give youth a chance, Jordaan or Whitehead at 12 and JP at 13.

Please can we end the Joubert ad Bosman Chapter, they will break our hearts Again. Their defence are nowhere. At least if youngsters have defensive issues it can be sorted, no hope in hell of sorting out Bosman and Joubert’s defence.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 25) : You are a wise man, Pierre!

Exactly what I would do, Maybe put Alberts at 8, and put Deysel in at 7.

Kanko’s low work rate and missed tackles is a problem.

  • @Reynier Jacobs (Comment 26) : Agree 100%. Bosman and Joubert is Vodacom Cup quality at best. Keep them far away from CC and Super 15.

Regarding Alberts at 8. I used to think so last year as well but I`m hoping for something different this year. Alberts or Deysel taking up the ball through countless phases only for us to turn over possession is not something I want to see again in the near future. We can`t afford to have them both on the park. Opposition knows we`ll never spread the ball and concentrate their defense close in.

@Original Pierre (Comment 28) : I also don’t like how Bosman plays too much, my favourite thing about him is his long passes; maybe a Whitehead/JPP combo with Jordaan off the bench could work…we shall see…I actually think if the backline looks like this it could be a masterstroke 😉

    9.Fred
    10.Lambie
    11.Mvovo
    12.Viljoen
    13.JPP
14.Jordaan (JPP and Jordaan can switch depending on what is required at a certain time within a game)
    15.Ndungane

  • @Reynier Jacobs (Comment 27) : I would always want Deysel 7 and Alberts at 8; but i just get worried that both get tired and then we will have to rotate to a very diffirent balance of loose forwards. Eg. Deysel Alberts gets tired, then keegan, Marcell and Kanko loosetrio…loosing 15 kg of Muscle mass right there.

Better to just have Alberts and Deysel rotate at 7, Keegan and Botes rotate at 6 and Kanko and Marcell rotate at 8…although Marcell can play 7 and Alberts at 8…either way we need to keep them all fresh.
