Luke leads Kings against Bulls

Former Sharks flyhalf Monty Dumond will play at outside centre for the Kings when they take on an understrength Bulls side in a warm-up game in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

The team, comprising mostly EP players, will be led by Luke Watson from the number 8 jersey, but has been hampered by a number of injury withdrawals, including a freakish tally of cruciate knee ligament victims. SP Marais, Siyanda Grey and Joe Snyman are all out until at least April as a result of similar knee injuries, while thoughts and prayers are with fullback George Whitehead, facing an uncertain future after a car accident.

Good old Earl Rose will have an opportunity to play (yet again) for his rugby future, named on the bench alongside discarded Bulls scrummy Dustin Jinka.

EP Kings: 15 Mzwandile Stick, 14 Norman Nelson, 13 Monty Dumond, 12 Wayne Stevens, 11 Marcello Sampson, 10 Louis Strydom, 9 Danie Faasen, 8 Luke Watson (captain), 7 Devin Oosthuizen, 6 Mpho Mbiyozo, 5 David Bulbring, 4 Darren Nell, 3 Clint Newland, 2 Hannes Franklin, 1 Jaco Engels.
Replacements – from: Andre Schlechter, Bobby Dyer, Zane Kilian, Wayne van Heerden, Jacques Engelbrecht, Dustin Jinka, Earl Rose, Tiger Mangweni, Jaco Bekker, Shane Gates.

  • Very sad to hear about George Whitehead. I’ve followed his career with keen interest for many years.

Also SP Marais, a creative fullback with good lateral movement and a turn of pace, impressed at u/21 level. Not sure where he now stands in terms of making a comeback from injury. So unfortunate.

  • Cheeky Watson, Luke Watson and Earl Rose all pulling in the same direction just seems SO “right”.
Long may they keep each other company.

  • This is a damn good team no doubt about it one can see Alan Solomons is doing such a fantastic job with his coaching staff along with Oom Cheeky.

Lots of talent in this team it’s a shame the exciting full back SP Marais is injured rate that guy very highly he can jol.

Happy for young Danie Faasen he was a stand out junior player for tukkies last year it’s good to see he has settled well in PE.

Highly rated loose forward Jacques Engelbrecht who by the way turned down a bulls super 15 contract 👿 can not even find a place in that loose trio.

I expect Wayne Stevens to play well also Norman Nelson has some toe.

I see Dustin Jinka has moved down to PE he is not a bad player he was just not good enough for the Bulls.

It’s going to be a tight match ex bulls players Devon Oosthuizen and Jaco Engels will want to prove a point to Frans Ludeke.

  • Is Dumond at 13 an experiment or has he played there before?

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 8) : I thought EP didn’t have enough money to hold onto their own players let alone import Kiwis.

  • @beet (Comment 1) : Saw SP Marias score a hatrick of tries in one of the few first div matches i watched last year. I really hope he gets picked up by a big union and continues in that attacking vein.

  • I’m not excited about this EP Kings team. With the exception of Luke Watson, it looks like a lot of players who are either well past their prime or couldn’t cut it at bigger unions.

After last year’s poor performance by the Bulls vs Kings, I think they arrive in town a lot more prepared and motivated this time round. If the Bulls get their surprising choice midfield of Cronje and Beyers to function, they should win.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 12) : @KSA Shark © (Comment 6) : Ross Kennedy is the player you’re thinking of, he’s gone to the Crusaders and will be starting in their next warm up game. he is deputising for All Blacks Sam Whitelock and Tom Donnelly

  • @Megatron (Comment 23) : And PS mate – I have no beef with The Kings – like I said in a previous thread – lets hope they can make us proud with this opportunity they get – everyone respects a team that has the ethos to do well, no one likes a spoiled brat. It is what it is – and there is no denying the controversy that surrounds the Kings – but the only way to silence the noise is by showing their courage on the pitch… All the best for this season – and obviously good luck for next year… The knives will be out for you guys…

  • @Megatron (Comment 27) : Who are, in your opinion, the definites to play for the Kings in SR next year? Solomons keeps going on about players needing to use their chances to prove they are up to SR level.

To my mind the following could compete:

    SP Marais (a real talent!)
    Stick (a bit iffy?)
    Jacque Engelbrecht
Mpho Mbiyizo (really impressed Kings vs B & I Lions)
    Siyanda Gray (fast and incisive)
    Johan Snyman
    Jaco Engels
    Hannes Franklin (very underrated player)

My considerations are if they could compete at this level and I might be missing a few names.
