The Bulls have selected an almost full strength outfit to take on the Cheetahs this Saturday, with a very young and exciting centre combination playing together.

Chiliboy Ralapelle will lead the team in Pierre Spies’ absence, who has a calf injury. Other players not considered due to injury are Wynand Oivier and Jacques Potgieter.

The young Francois Venter teams up with former Stormer Johann Sadie in the midfield, and will be looking to show the coaches, and the rest of South Africa, how great they are together.

The other combinations to keep an eye on are Steyn and Hougaard playing in the halfbacks, as well as Flip van der Merwe and Juandré Kruger in the second row of the scrum.

CJ Stander at the back of the scrum will want to impress as Pierre Spies as captain will get ost of the game time in this position.

Bulls: 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 CJ Stander, 7 Dewald Potgieter, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Flip van der Merwe, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle (captain), 1 Dean Greyling.

Substitutes: 16 Willie Wepener, 17 Frik Kirsten, 18 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 19 Arno Botha, 20 Jano Vermaak, 21 Louis Fouché, 22 JJ Engelbrecht.

  • Good team it’s a pity we have to play the sharks in the first match. 👿
Everyone is excited about Venter and Sadie, J-J has a sore calf the bulls coaches do not want to risk him.

It will be a hard match vs Grey Frystaat hope the guys give it horns.

Adendorff doing well to hold off the challenge from guys like Lean Schwartz, Jonno Ross and Wiaan Lieb. Even Nardus.

  • I’m very excited about the Venter-Sadie partnership. 2 Boks in the making. I’m keen to see how many passes they make between them. Could turn back the clock to the days of Dries Scholtz and Tian Botha who used to try mimic Anton Leonard from out of the centre possies.

Some of those young loose forwards are playing varsity cup under 20 rugby.

Still pretty pissed off about Marnus Schoeman i will actually ask xander why on earth they let him go.

  • I rate that Marnus Schoeman. An out and out opensider. Scored loads of tries a couple of seasons ago.

You see that van Velze is playing at lock for the Bulls ‘B’ team

But if the Currie Cup is anything to go by we are poor in the no name games…so I am not too perturbed….

We are back to winning ways at Coke park….and we have plenty of home games before we tour…
We have the ability to win close games….

  • I think the Stormers are going to have a bit of a tough time…

The Sharks look good…with those forwards they should win most and when lose not by much….

The Lions are still a wildcard….but we definitely going to win a good few…and a few overseas too…

The Bulls look good again…but I don’t see them challenging for the playoff’s…

Cheetahs will be better in the comp…take my work for it…and with Goosen there….who just needs to find his feet….willl def help them win a few close games…

So Sharks are SA fav with all other with a chance….

  • Cheetahs will be fine but they are going to find out, like we did last year, that rugby is still a collision sport that requires you to be physically strong and not just fit. They’ve focused on fitness and will take a month or so to adjust to the physical requirements of this competition especially if the majority of their round 1 games are against physical teams. You need to get the balance between fitness and strength right. We more especially need to spend a lot of time working on our strength during preseason as our game is about dominating our opponent, hope we got it right this year. Still haunted by the sight of a thin Bismarck, Jannie, Beast, Kanko last year this time. We didn’t dominate too many packs last year hence I’m happy we have Sykes back.
