Lions lose hooker

The Lions have received a blow to their Super Rugby preparations after first choice hooker Bandise Maku tore a pectoral muscle, with the corrective surgery keeping the hooker on the sidelines for a few months.

The full extent and length of Maku’s unavailability is yet to be confirmed, but it does mean that the Lions will start the tournament with Martin Bezuidenhout and Callie Visagie battling it out for the starting hooker spot.

Callis Visagie is a new recruit to the Lions setup, having captained the Maties Varsity Cup team last year. They also have Francois du Toit, a former SA Under-20 hooker in their system, who is currently playing for UJ in the Varsity Cup.

The Lions kick off their Super Rugby campaign against the Cheetahs in Johannesburg.

  • What’s happened to Edgar Marutlule (spelling?)? He’s not even mentioned these days.

He is with UJ, i think sitting on the bench. I know he played a few games for the Lions mostly off the bench and toured overseas. I think the Lions coaching staff probably feel that he is a bit on the light side for Super rugby so id imagine he probably will be playing for the Vodacom Cup side.

This is a blow for the Lions, but I think at the same time it gives a fantastic opportunity for Callie Visagie to stake a claim for the starting berth. Martin Bezuidenhoudt is also around to provide cover along with Franna Du Toit.

  • @Pat (Comment 2) : not even on the bench for UJ. Not sure who their starting hooker is, but Shaun Malton was in 16 on Monday night.

Yip he is unfortunatly a little light weight for the hooker berth imo ..certainly is a very mobile hooker though and plays with alot of heart. This injury of Maku is rather unfortunate as I thought he was starting to hit some serious form last year.

Having our depth tested this early should answer a few questions early on.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : That’s right. He was Sharks u21 co-captain last year with Hadebe, wasn’t he?

Francois Du Toit, ex SA U20 player started, I think he will probably be first choice vodacom cup as well. I know Edgar is definitely in the UJ squad but looks like Malton may have leapfrogged him.

    @csb (Comment 4) :

I was impressed with Edgar, plays with a lot of energy and heart but yep just a bit too lightweight to perform to Superrugby level.

    Yes..

Malton is a good chap, should do well in the Varsity setup after he played almost all the U21 games last year, either starting or getting second half in tandem with Hadebe..

  • Blessing in disguise? Lions had lotsa line-out troubles against the stormers in the warm up.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : I think he’ll have his work cut out just getting a run-on start with Francois du Toit there at UJ as well.

Will du Toit not get the call for Vodacom Cup duty?

How does that work, can they play both Vodacom and Varsity Cup?

I think Du Toit will be Vodacom 1st choice, and then perhaps even Superrugby bench if there are niggling injuries, or player rotation. Then its up to Malton, Edgar and Mark Pretorius (SA U20 hooker) to fight it out for any other slots. I suppose the Lions could even look outwith the franchise or even to the Leopards and Pumas.
