Deysel, Alberts eye tour return

The Sharks this morning confirmed that neither Willem Alberts nor Jean Deysel is likely to feature at all during the opening month of Super Rugby, with both players earmerked to return in time for the Sharks Antipodean tour.

The Sharks kick off their campaign with two tough away games, against the Bulls and the Stormers, before taking on the Lions and the champion Reds back in Durban. The first tour fixture is against the Waratahs in Sydney on 24 March and it’s by this stage that Plumtree looks set to have the selection of headache caused by having both Alberts and Deysel available, in addition to his other loose forwards.

Alberts is understood to be recovering more quickly than Deysel, though, so there’s a slight chance he might come into the reckoning earlier, perhaps even in time for the game against the Lions in round 3.

This blow is tempered somewhat by the great form shown by a number of young loose forwards in the Sharks squad, most notably Marcel Coetzee and Tera Mthembu. With a gaping hole now at 7, Plumtree is likely to entrust Coetzee with a full-time role at the side of the scrum, with Mthembu pushing Ryan Kankowski hard for the number 8 jersey. Don’t discount the possibility of Pieter-Steph du Toit making the bench as a fifth forward, though, able to offer an option either in the second row, or on the flank.

  • i think it is actually better, cause last year alberts started burning out by the end of the tournament from being overplayed, so this will help him stay on fomr longer.

  • @MJ (Comment 2) : I agree with you… Just for once, I’d prefer the Sharks to finish more strongly than they start.

  • Am I the only one who`s a bit nervous because of this?

We need our heavy hitters early on already . . .

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 4) : Gives Marcell and PSDT a chance to stake a claim and it’ll improve our depth! Alberts and Deysel were overplayed last year…especially considering their function in the team. Bash, bash…and bash some more!!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : And it will give the young guns some S15 experience while the tournament warms up.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : We have to find a balance between keeping our number one players fit and in form and not burning them out. Maybe benching or resting them completely every 2-3 games…

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 4) : actually no, I am not worried really. Deysel’s play has become very predictable…I reckon some new ways might just be what we need!

  • I see that 365 is a bit behind in running an article on who could be the next Bok captain. They seem to favour Schalk and Fourie Du preez.

Hope Bissie gets it. We need someone guaranteed of a starting spot!! Choose the team and then the captain. Schalk has too much competition for a starting spot in the loose-trio!!

  • @Ice (Comment 10) : He needs to mix things up a bit. Start offloading in the tackle instead of going to ground the whole time. Hope he’s regained his pace. He looked slow during last year’s Currie Cup!

When did Deysel ever have pace? I must have missed that… πŸ˜†

  • @Culling Song (Comment 13) : He wasn’t Kanko-quick but he seemed like a carthorse last year! He used to run like Alberts and have some momentum going into contact. πŸ˜†

  • 😈 Coetzee has played for his place and it will be up to Deysel & Alberts to lift them. Healthy competition is good for the team. They will all get playing time during the season and might just be hungry again?? Deysel needs to check his discipline as well! This is not to bad, but I am nervous. Will we be able to barge over the line from 10m out? 😈

  • It is a good thing to have Alberts and Deysel back a bit later, in that they will be able to go full tilt for the rest of the tournament, and hopefully Plum rotates them both, so that we don’t get the same situation as last year and year before where Deysel and Alberts were run into the ground.

Need and want to see a lot more rotation in Superugby this year. So marcell is gonna get through a lot of work the first month, so 4 me it is a must that Du Toit is on the bench…since he is the only other guy(Other than Coetzee) suitable and capable of playing the 7 role for us, with Deysel/Alberts still out.

I really hope Mthembu has done enough to have jumped above kanko in the pecking order…i wasn’t sure he could do it; but with some Big Boys out injured and doing Rehab, he has showed real hunger and fight, and i admire that. I can’t say, from what i have heard, that Kanko is showing as much commitment and hunger, compared with the younger guys.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 4) : Yes, i’ve been stressing about it since i heard that Alberts/Deysel had ops. I trust Marcell can do the job, 4 sure; but a Month of Superugby without Deysel and Alberts will take some doing.

@Ice (Comment 10) : I thought Deysel was coming right, again, he added offloading to his game in the Currie Cup which was great to see, and we have to admit even when they said Deysel was fit, he continued to limp and favour the one knee…so hopefully this recent Op has sorted that out and we can have a 100% fit Deysel…been having lots of injury problems the last 2 years or so…i’m praying and believe those worries will be over.

  • Don’t think our pack without Beas, Dyselt and Alberts will be able to manage the Bull’s pack. Saw their game against FS, they were brutal.

Let’s give them the points now and not bother showing up.
