Sharks beat improved Kings

The Sharks beat a Southern Kings team that showed improvement from previous weeks gone by, at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Friday night.

As it was drizzling throughout the whole match both sides tried to adapt to playing conditions, playing with their forwards rather trying to play an expensive game.

The Sharks, known for their solid forward pack had some good resistance from the Kings, both packs had some good mauling up field, and some big hits by the forwards.

The Sharks always would’ve had the upper hand among the backs, with only Riaan Viljoen and Tim Whitehead not having the privilege to wear the Springbok jersey in a test.

The Sharks managed to score 2 tries in the 1st half through Odwa Ndungane and Ryan Kankowski, with the conversions both missed by Patrick Lambie.

In the second half the game opened up a bit with the Sharks running in 4 times behind the Kings goal line, Sharks had more opportunity to run the ball among the backs, and some good joining from the back by Viljoen.

Second half tries came through Riaan Viljoen, two from Keegan Daniel and the other one coming in the last minute by Paul Jordaan cutting straight through the Kings back line. Patrick Lambie convertied all 4.

Finale score 38-13

Overall it was a good performance in unfavorable conditions from the Durban team, much to look forward to from the youngsters and new signings.
Players to keep your eye on, Dale Chadwick, Anton Bresler, Marcell Coetzee, Tim Whitehead, Riaan Viljoen, Paul Jordaan.

Sharks 38: Tries: Odwa Ndungane, Ryan Kankowski, Riaan Viljoen, Keegan Daniel (2), Paul Jordaan. Conversions: Pat Lambie (4).

Southern Kings 13: Try Boetie Britz. Penalties: Falie Oelschig (2). Conversion: Earl Rose

  • I’m not sure why people are considering this an improvement for the kings. 38 points on a wet day with the sharks not taking shots at goal. I would love to see the kings play some good rugby but there is a reason why they have not qualified for the currie cup yet. Not yet good enough.

  • Sounds like the Sharks had a decent run out in this game, with a bit of resistance.

The game agaisnt the Bulls is going to be quite a step up from this though.

    Thanks Pierre for the report!

  • @soutie (Comment 3) : yes BUT…

    can’t believe I’m doing this….

how many players of genuine Super Rugby quality are going to commit themselves to the Kings without the assurance of Super Rugby?

  • Cavalliers 43 Kings 12… not many super rugby players in that team either. I appreciate what people are trying to do down there, just dissapointed that they havent been able to qualify for the currie cup yet. I actually want to see this team do well.

  • Hi guys can i add my 5c into the Southern Kings playing Super Rugby pot.
I think the main corcern for most guys (or excuse) for them not to play SR is, will they b competitive?
Like Rob said, how many players will really commit themselves to playing for the Kings if they dont play SR, any player would wanne play SR (except Earl Rose, he would just want a contract anywhere), even if Kings play CC theyll sit with the same senario, no SR.
Kings only have a handful of contracted players for 2013, which means they have some cash hidden away somewhere, or they waiting a commitment from a big sponser, which means theyll buy a competitive team, the two teams that played the Cheetahs and Lions will probably make out the reserve bench.
I know the results from the games where probably not what the public wanted to see (or maybe what they wanted).
If i look at the Kings side i recon they have a pretty good forward pack that will be competitive in SR, the backline needs some more stars.
They only lost two games in last years vodacom cup against Lions and Bulls with 1point and lost two games in 1st diff againt Boland, so in my opinion a very good win ratio, maybe not against the best teams, but hey thats where they play, must make the best of it.
Also in Kings defense they played warm ups without Luke Watson, SP Marais that was one of the stars in the backline last year, Johnny Nokwe, Paul Perez that played 7s for Somoa, Louie Strydom and Monty Dumond those players could b a match winner in any team.
Also Kings are a better setup then what they were in 2005 with the Spears.
Maybe theyll win one or two games in SR maybe none, but hey, if the Lions end up bottom of the log every year and win one or two games, why cant Kings replace them and give some big rugby for the people in PE, and people will go watch. In the promo/relegation game in 2010 there were more people at the EP/Puma game then in FIFA semi finale at the stadium (about 40 000)imagine SR or even CC, we hungry for rugby down here.

In my honest opinion i dont think its gonna happen, again SARU made promises that they cant keep, theres alot more behind the scene stuff thats not just about playing
    (binding contracts and so forth)

If Kings are in the plans forward and doesnt happen next year, make a plan and put them in CC and lets see how that goes!

Nothing to do with the Lions personally – whoever is least successful in SR should be the one to step aside for the Kings.

  • I would’ve liked to see the kings in this years currie cup. Saru are setting them up for failure without providing them the logical stepping stones.
