Four positions still in doubt

By my reckoning, John Plumtree and the Sharks coaches will have at least 11 positions in their starting lineup for Friday’s match against the Bulls written in pen, with up to four spots still under debate. The bench, also, appears to be a little less certain.

The pack looks mostly settled; don’t expect any variation from the front row that played against the Kings (like there is any option!), with Steven Sykes also a definite in the number 4 jersey. It’s at number 5 where the coaches will need to decide whether Anton Bresler has done enough to get a start ahead of Ross Sekate, or whether the latter’s perceived advantages at lineout time will settle the argument in his favour. Bresler has enjoyed start in both of the previous warm up games, but knowing how Plumtree thinks, I would expect to see Skeate start, with Bresler in jersey 18.

The loose trio of Keegan Daniel, Marcell Coetzee and Ryan Kankowski is, I would think, a formality as well, although I feel the coaches might spring a little surprise by including both Jacques Botes and Pieter-Steph du Toit on a 5-man forward bench.

Amongst the backs, scrumhalf, inside centre and right wing are still uncertain, with Pat Lambie, Lwazi Mvovo, JP Pietersen and Riaan Viljoen assured starts at 10,11,13 and 15 respectively. Plumtree will need to pick between the known (Charl McLeod) and the unpredictable (Fred Michalak) to partner Lambie, with the other a sure pick on the bench. Tim Whitehead and Meyer Bosman will scrap it out for the number 12 jersey, while 14 could go to virtually anyone, but will probably be entrusted to either Louis Ludik or Sibusiso Sithole. Given that there is likely to be only a single backline replacement spot up for grabs, that number 22 jersey will be a hotly contested item, with any of Bosman, Whitehead, Ludik, Sithole or Paul Jordaan in line for it. My feeling, though, is that Plumtree will back Jordaan’s dazzling array of skills and aim to use him as a second-half impact substitute; a tactic that has worked well in each of the warm up games to date.

Probable Sharks 22:
1 Chadwick, 2 du Plessis, 3 du Plessis, 4 Sykes, 5 Skeate, 6 Daniel (capt), 7 Coetzee, 8 Kankowski, 9 McLeod, 10 Lambie, 11 Mvovo, 12 Bosman, 13 Pietersen, 14 Ludik, 15 Viljoen
16 Burden, 17 Herbst, 18 Bresler, 19 du Toit, 20 Botes, 21 Michalak, 22 Jordaan

  • One change from the team I selected in my article yesterday, with Odwa now ruled out.

I like the team, and we will win with them..

  • I was just looking back a bit at some team sheets and i won’t be surprised if Ludik plays at 15 and Viljoen at 14.

  • @Franshark (Comment 4) : i reckon it is a 50/50 thing, Ludik is the Sharks seasoned no15 after all.

  • Burden,Michalak and Jordaan offer the excitement off the bench and Bresler & Botes offers the stability. Pretty decent team. Lets hope our frowards can provide front foot ball- the key against the Bulls!

  • I want Fred to start at 9; but if i see that team taking into consideration who is not available for selection…i will be happy if that lineup is named.

  • @G West (Comment 2) : Viljoen played 14 for Cheetahs won’t happen for Sharks, Viljoen is wasted when he plays wing, we need his boot in play, and he is good running through the centre channels. Ludik is faster and his boot is not as good as Viljoen and he offers little in terms of Flair from the back…I just think 14.Viljoen and 15.Ludik will never be the case at The Sharks.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : Yup it could; im just wary of Mcloed’s high error rate, it still worries me.

Ludik at 14, would rather go for someone with more Flair; but if Plum was looking for a player that plays the most similar to Odwa and can Cover 15, obviously Ludik is ur man, so it makes sense that he will be in Odwa’s place if Odwa isn’t fit. Lots of talk about the impact Jordaan has made off the bench, so i really hope to see him in that 22 jersey. They probably juggling Whitehead and Jordaan a bit in their heads…but the way the coaching staff has been talking it sounds like Jordaan; i really do hope so πŸ™‚

Regarding the match against the kings, The running lines of paul jordaan when he moved to 13 was really good!! I liked him next to Bosman!! Jp didn`t do anything wrong, his passing to the right was just bothering me a little!! Did not look comfortable at all!! But lets hope for the best!!!!

  • Mcloed has been the King of the Unforced error this past year…Forwards give us some great front foot ball, Mcloed goes crazy and tries to offload while being tackled by 3 players, and obviously knocks on…Mcloed seriously lacks some composure…Please Fred at 9, Please!!

I thought Mcloed was better this pre-season; but after hearing he had a shocker against the Kings, nee asseblief, i almost broke my hand last year when i punched the wall because Mcloed was knocking the ball so much.

  • Methinks that if we dont get at least parity in the scrums and lineouts then we will be a sad bunch come Saturday morning.
And Im really worried that we wont get that parity, especially after reading in the Afrikaans press that The Kings gave us a hard time in both the scrums and lineouts.

I do all my thinking in Afrikaans as well..

JPP does battle with his passing to the right, but as a seasoned professional I am sure he is working on it.

  • @JJR (Comment 20) : Thats exactly what happened in pe!! It seems to me as if Mcleod is turning into a second Cockett!! Trying to do everything on his own, dont get me wrong Mcleod is one of the main reasons we won the currie cup in 2010,but he just doesn`t look to be the same player!!! I truely hopes he proves me wrong, but with us having much better centers it would be a shame if we had a cockett type player ruining our quick ball!!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 22) : Four nocks in one game for a scrummie and being taken off early in the second half….. Not good enough! Evereyone around me started booing him!! and I can promise you they weren`t kings supporters!! The reserve scrumhalf had a much better game!!!

    @Evan 101 (Comment 28) :

I remember from previous seasons, when doing the stats articles, that rain affected games would always create anything from 8 to 10 knocks for the scrumhalf, purely because he touches the ball so often, and almost always behind a pack or in a ruck where there are feet all over the show..

Four knocks in a half in a wet game in preseason can be forgiven..
