Cheetahs selections for the greater good

The reasoning behind the Cheetahs’ strange selections have been explained in the Volksblad this morning, with the Cheetahs’ backline coach coming clean.

Should the Cheetahs have selected their preferred inside backs of Piet van Zyl, Johan Goosen and Philip Snyman, the three would have had no Super Rugby experience between them

The decision to name Tewis de Bruyn and Andries Strauss has all to do with surrounding the young flyhalf with as much experience as possible, ahead of his Super Rugby debut.

Both Piet van Zyl and Philip Snyman started the majority of the preseason game inside and outside Goosen, with van Zyl managing a spot on the bench and Snyman not even making the match 22.

In other news, Lappies Labuschagné has had to withdraw from the team as a result of his shoulder injury in a Varsity Cup clash on Monday night, and Philip van der Walt will take his place in the starting line up.

  • Do they actually rate Lappies more than Phillip van der Walt?

  • “Andries Strauss out of position at inside centre” ??

Wasn’t that where he excelled for the Sharks and received his Bok call-up to play against the Baa-Baas?? I thought that Strauss and Eberhson would be their starting centre combination anyway.

Countering the Lions playing both Cobus Grobbelaar & Derick Minnie.

Not always a case of the best XV. Your (supposed) best XV aren’t always the best XV for the opposition your facing.

Agree with them playing Tewis de Bruyn as well. With Tewis they know what they’re going to get, in a game they MUST WIN. If they lose this, they are probably looking at missing out to the Kings.

  • Andries Strauss out of position at 12!??? It’s not April the 1st is it?

Hope it was a typo and not done of purpose, cos that is almost the same as saying Beast is a tighthead prop.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 17) :

    Fair enough. Won’t happen though.

The Boks will continue as a strong defensive team, and will pick players that have the best goal-kicking percentages, and work from there.

Time to accept it and move on.

And yes, you’re only hope of replacing Morne, which many seem to want to do, is to hope that Goosen becomes the all-round flyhalf you’ve all been hoping for.

It’s not going to be Lambie, fact.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 19) :

Fair enough. Sorry my previous post was a bit harsh… but I never said he doesn’t need to grow.

My Bok flyhalf would be Morne Steyn, just to clear things up.

I don’t want to lose close games because we couldn’t slot kicks from halfway… It’s a necessary skill that Lambie doesn’t possess at this stage.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 21) :

And yes, we have Frans Steyn… but goal-kicking in general also.

What did Goosen kick during the CC? Close to around 97% if I remember correctly…

    Morne also hardly ever misses.

The Boks won’t go into a game without one of these guys. They’d be crazy to do it.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 16) : Jantjies won’t be succesful at international level, and i’m looking forward to see the Lions take some big defeats this season…I hate arrogant John Mitchell, and he can’t think CC comes anywhere close to Superugby, especially when Boks are flying in and out of CC all the time…

There is a reason the Lions don’t have any current Boks, most of their players are as average as they come…they certainly look like a CC lineup, not like a superugby lineup.

I agree with you… Jantjies had a good CC season, but I just don’t rate the guy all that highly.

I’m sure the Lions will win a few games, because while Mitchell is a genuine prick who definitely gets up to some very shady things, he has instilled a hard-working culture within the Lions franchise… They won’t win enough though, and hopefully not enough to avoid relegation. I’d hate to see the Cheetahs go down 😐

    @Zibbie (Comment 24) :

Even then I think for accuracy, and distance clearing your line they’ll go with Morne Steyn.

Lambie is just not the type of 10 Heyneke is going to pick as his first-choice. Off the bench he might be able to do a job there… Hard to say because I rate Lambie (as a rugby player) as much as the next guy, but he’s not the 10 for the 2012-15 Boks.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 25) : You will beat the cheetahs, i will give u that…i hatin cos Lions actually believe they can win Superugby? There is being positive and just being darn Crazy…Lions will finish bottom 5 of superugby 4 sure, i have no doubt. My theory has backing, as simple as just comparing their squad with everyone else…Lions lack some serious quality to be anywhere close to contenders for superugby.

Good Coaching and Team spirit can only take a team so far; Quality is what takes teams to the next level…watch how the Crusaders dip in form and the Chiefs perform a lot better…Quality in and Quality out.

Don’t think they’ll beat the Cheetahs.

Last season the Cheetahs put almost 50 over them. Another years experience… sorting out their game-plan and so forth, and adding Goosen who is going to slot them from everywhere, only makes the Cheetahs harder to beat.

Think the Crusaders is a bad example hey. I’m picking them to win it overall, they look very impressive.

Crotty is a heck of a good 12, IMO better then SBW who narrowed down what the Crusaders could do in their backline. One-trick ponies in the midfield are never a sustained success. SBW is a good offloader, not a good rugby player.

That, adding a bit of depth in each position and bringing in Tom Donnelly as a starting lock will make them near unbeatable this season I reckon.

At least in the latter stages when they have McCaw & Todd back also, but Bleyendaal & Todd are also two very very good players, who would be starting almost everywhere else.

Also, look for Robbie Fruean to score a lot of tries and end up as the unanimous choice for best centre in SR 2012.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 55) : I think the Lions pack looks Solid this year with Roodt in there; but the Biggest worry for the Lions IMO, is the Centres, Great Defenders, but superugby has often showed that the most attacking teams are the ones that end at the top of the pile…i just wonder if the Lions backs will complement some of the good work i think the Starting pack could provide.

And Bondesio…a lot of question marks…get Ross Cronje in there and the Lions will be a lot more effective on attack.

My Lions team(All players fit), if Lions are hoping to Finish top 8-10.

    1. Cj Van der linde
    2.Maku
    3.Cilliers

    12.Le Grange
    13.Mapoe
    14.R.Combrink
    15.Taute

Best starting XV for Lions me thinks.

That’s my gripe. I find this habit of some bloggers of saying that some talented kid WILL rewrite rugby history based on some early promise to be infuriating. Similarly this matter-of-fact way of talking up or writing off certain favoured teams – like its destined and they have read the tea-leaves.

Plenty of young stars never made it – Bosman and Waylon were Boks at 20, and gone since then. Other made it late – like Honibal or Andre Joubert. Life isn’t that predictable.

    @JJR (Comment 54) :
Hating a team for being ambitious seems rather small-minded. Would anyone have predicted a Lions CC victory last year?

And a fit Rhodes is a must in the starting 22…have high hopes for that kid.

i agree with that . Look i have no problem with Goosen . But he really needs to prove him self . Same with Elton . He had a bad SR season last year . He needs to show that he can play well at SR level . He has shown in the Currie cup that he has the potential to do it .

Im very nervous about the game against the Cheetahs .. im glad im not playing cause im sure i would have cocked it up ..

For me the Sharks should be the best SA bet . they have a great team and good backup .

  • @Big Fish (Comment 58) : Never said i hate the team…i don’t like the coach.

I just don’t like it when people really unrealistically rate themselves high or low(Humble brag)…it would be like Alan Solomans saying Kings will win Superugby in thier first season or the other side, the Crusaders saying they will struggle to make to the Knockouts.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 64) : @Zibbie (Comment 65) : No, Don’t think Reds would’ve won; but i thought a lot of winning last year had to do with their easy conference 😉 . Saffas and New Zealanders have it tough…more so us, because our derbies to my eyes seem to be a lot more physical and fast compared to the New zealand ones.

Yes, a lot is in the mind, main reason why Sharks have not been consistent in the past, they have not been mentally geared up for the easier games and then end up slipping some points.

Obviously Setting ones standards high is a very good thing; setting unrealistic goals is not, IMO…maybe that’s why teams rather just say we will take it game for game and then see where we are end of the Tournament 🙂 Basically reach the best of ur potential, and to be honest i don’t see the Lions’ potential as winning Superugby…maybe more being consistently in the top 10-7 teams in Superugby.

Sharks and Stormers pretty much every season have the squad and potential to win Superugby; Bulls…not this year, next year they will have a chance, especially if Arno Botha, Sadie, etc have grown/developed some more. Lions i simply don’t believe they have a squad to compete with the Top 6 or so teams of superugby.

My Top 6 for Superugby 2012- Sharks, Stormers, Blues, Chiefs, Crusaders, Bulls and Tahs. Unfortunately with the Conference format, it won’t end up looking quite like that.

  • True . But the reds still had to go and win the Final . look you have to set your goals . if you dont have a goal to work to you wont have anything to aim for . i think aiming for something is the best . the Lions days of excuses are over . we are here to win it and win it now .

well maybe not this year . if we end 7th this year ill be over the moon . 3rd in the SA conference ? what a bargain

  • @JJR (Comment 66) : Your top 6 contains 7 teams. Clearly you’re not one of the many accountants on this site…

After listening to yesterday’s budget speech, you may be one a tax practitioner though 😈

  • @Culling Song (Comment 68) : 😳 Okay, no Aussie side then(People wonder why i did Maths Literacy 🙂 )…obviously they will have a couple in the Knockouts; but i believe the SA and New Zealand teams are far stronger than them this year.

@Zibbie (Comment 67) : 3rd Place in conference…Possible, Yes. If you don’t run into injuries and the Bulls keep playing the kicking brand of Rugby it surely is a possibility.

Cheetahs have talent; but they have always been seriously inconsistent…so not sure weather they will be able to keep away from 5th in the SA conference. Coenie, Brussouw, Goosen, Adriaan Strauss and later J.Smith will have to be on form if they don’t want the SA wooden spoon. We will see how the Cheetahs/Lions game goes this weekend, the cheetahs can be very crap on one day, and beat the best the next…so always hard to predict what the cheetahs will come up with.
