Consider this

The Sharks started their season with a loss against the Bulls on Friday night, managing a bonus point for finishing within seven points of the men from Pretoria. This was a disappointing start to the season as a lot is expected from the Sharks this season. But let’s consider a few things before giving up all hope.

The Sharks went into the match as underdogs, with the Bulls favoured by both the bookies as well as the general rugby public. Although the Sharks generally do well at Loftus, it is still an away game. If you are an avid Sharks supporter like me, you would have been very sure that the Sharks would have gotten a victory against the Bulls on Friday night, but it was not to be, and we are left with disappointment filling us and fears of yet another disappointing season.

But there are positives, believe it or not. The fact that the Sharks kept the Bulls scoreless in the first half is positive, even though we didn’t score any points ourselves, much the same can be said of the Bulls. For a team that was not firing on all cylinders in the first half, we did okay to keep them at bay.

The Sharks managed to do what they do best, and that is to not play the first 15 minutes of the second half, and with that, the Bulls, or rather Morne Steyn, took full advantage of that, slotting penalties one after the other. This is something that can be worked on luckily, and is not an inherent problem.

The way the guys played in the last 15 odd minutes also left me with positive vibes. If only they had realized sooner that they now have a team capable of running the ball and capable of scoring tries. We did score a try though, through Jacques Botes, and looked like scoring more. I am also very sure that the Sharks would have walked off with victory, had the changes been made a few minutes earlier.

During last year, most supporters were crying to see new blood and an outside-the-box way of thinking, and that is what we got from our coach. He played the youngsters, he backed the likes of Anton Bresler, Tim Whitehead and a shift of JP Pietersen to wing. These things do not just work overnight, players need to settle and for a first run out, even though a win would have been best, the guys are primed to play really well.

A loss is a loss, and yes we are disappointed, it was our senior players who let the team down a bit, but this is not a hopeless situation. It was an away loss, which was not a hammering and we still managed a point, in the first game of the season. Things against the Stormers will be tough, but the team as a whole gained 22 caps in experience, and will take that experience into account when going down to Newlands this Saturday.

In conclusion, I am with Culling Song in my opinion that vast changes now will only ruin a promising season. We need to back the team, get behind each of the players and believe that the youngsters will again give their best and the senior guys will step up and stake their claim.

  • I agree completely. We lost and yes it is disappointing but things can only get better. Watch this space.

  • It’s one loss away from home. We have 17 more games to play, the wins will come and there will be enough of them.

I agree, we don’t need kneejerk changes.

  • Totally agree with this article! Normally I’m a half empty glass type of person but this time after the match I felt positive. What I found upsetting was that it was the old heads that let us down, but all the youngsters came through beautifully, JP is looking good at centre and Alberts is still to come back. As to the captain issue Keegan had better improve 100% this weekend – I wasn’t happy for him to be captain, and frankly after Friday I not sure about Bissie either – the way I feel about these two this morning they would both sit on the bench this weekend!

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 4) : This year he has no excuse he can’t hide behind not playing enough as an excuse.

Last year people were saying his throw-ins are rusty because he only plays 20min a game.
Last year some believed his antics were from frustration at having to play behind someone else.

This year there no places to hide and no excuses.

    Clean up your act Bismarck.

  • I was struck by the inordinate amount of penalties awarded in the whole of the South African conference. I was rather worried Mark Lawrence would injure a lung the way he shrieked into that poor piece of plastic. Was I watching a different super sport or did all the games stop start like a NH game? Difficult to get up and go with all those penalties. I’m please the Sharks crossed the tryline and the Bulls didnt. If the Lions and Bulls are going to rely on kickers for their points, they better have them armoured cos without them they look decidely vulnerable. 🙁 🙁

  • 100% with u on this Rich. I just saw too much that looked promising. The one change I WOULD make is to take Kanko off…he’s not firing and have not been firing for quite some time. We need to give Coetsee a chance at 8. Didn’t he get vc player of the year nomination playing 8th man?

I totally agree with your comments #5! But just for the record I don’t blame him entirely for our line out woes either! Our locks were dismal! What Victoria said in Boot n all irt Bresler came back to haunt me on Friday, and Sykes needs to show me why we welcomed him back when we have Marais and Dutoit playing vodacom cup! I don’t believe they would have been any worse than our “experienced” lock 🙁 (sorry Ice)

  • @Ice (Comment 7) : I’d play Marcell at 8 and PSD at 7. Sounds like he’s the only other option we have as a ball-carrier!

Bissie was supposed to help out but he was useless. Marcell was the only option and it was easy to read that he was the only option so the Bulls just gang-tackled him!

  • Agree with you there, will be interesting to see what will happen if Alberts does return this week – well not so much this week as he would come foo the bench but once he starts.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 10) : Poor Sykes was desperate to come back. Funny how some players leave and are welcomed back while others also leave on good terms and can’t even get a look in at ANY province in the country.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 10) : You also need to remember that the players who go to play in the NH never come back better players. It always takes a while to whip them back into shape and for them to get back to the same playing standards.
