Bok centre Wynand Olivier has been cleared to return to action for the Bulls in this weekend’s Super Rugby derby against the Cheetahs. Olivier has been forced to sit on the sidelines for the entire pre-season, thanks to a combination of shoulder and wrist injuries which are now finally behind him.

The news is less good for off-season signing Johann Sadie, though. The highly-rated former Stormers centre sustained an AC joint tear in the opening quarter of the Bulls’ victory over the Sharks; according to team doctor Org Strauss, Sadie will miss two or three weeks of rugby, about the same as prop Morne Mellet and loose forward Arno Botha, who are out with shoulder and back complaints respectively.

The Bulls will need to make a call as to which of Olivier or newcomer Frans Venter will run in Sadie’s 13 jersey against the Cheetahs, since both play more regularly at inside centre.

Gaining weight is usually a bad thing .. think Olivier will count as dead weight ..

  • Talk about rushing a guy back. Wynand had to greet me with his left hand on Friday because his hand was still sore. Don’t be surprised if he hurts it again.
