Herbst rewarded with first Sharks start

Wiehahn Herbst has been named to start at tight head prop for the Sharks against the Stormers on Saturday in a rotational change that rewards his good pre-season form – and a superb cameo against the Bulls.

In further changes to the pack that struggled in Pretoria, Ross Skeate comes in for Anton Bresler at lock, while the loose forward trio has been somewhat rejigged as a result of the loss of Ryan Kankowski to injury. Captain Keegan Daniel will operate at number 8, with Jacques Botes starting on the open side. Young Tera Mtembu comes into the squad and will look to earn his first cap of the bench.

Amongst the backs, only Tim Whitehead misses out this week, after failing to recover from a groin strain. His place in the number 12 jersey goes to Meyer Bosman, with Marius Joubert coming into the number 21 jersey.

Neither Willem Alberts nor Odwa Ndungane has made the match 22, as expected.

The Sharks

1. Dale Chadwick
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Wiehahn Herbst
4. Steven Sykes
5. Ross Skeate
6. Jacques Botes
7. Marcell Coetzee
8. Keegan Daniel (Captain)
9. Frederic Michalak
10. Patrick Lambie
11. Lwazi Mvovo
12. Meyer Bosman
13. JP Pietersen
14. Louis Ludik
15. Riaan Viljoen

Replacements
16. Craig Burden
17. Jannie du Plessis
18. Anton Bresler
19. Lubabalo Mtembu
20. Charl McLeod
21. Marius Joubert
22. Paul Jordaan

  • Our forwards will have to play really well if we gonna win with such light looseforwards…our heaviest is 106kg! Gotta be kiddin me Plum…I understand if Alberts is not ready; but at least pop Du toit on the bench in case we get smashed up front in the first half.

I will always shout my lungs out for The Sharks; but Stormers pack needs to be poor on the day if our backs are gonna get some decent ball on saturday. C’mon Sharks!!

One positive is that we should have that Underdog tag 4 sure…our pack doesn’t look too physically threatning as a unit to be honest.

  • Rob. Skeate in for Bresler not Sykes in for Bresler!

I’m worried about our ‘light’ loose trio. 😯

  • I would have preferred to see Charl start because with that light loose trio we will have to open up the game and Lambie will need fast service. Expect the Stormers to maul at every opportunity.

  • Overall, I’m happy with Plum’s consistency in selection. Worried about the light loose trio like everyone else but being an eternal optimistic Sharks fan I’m hoping we’ll finally see that game-plan (we were hoping to see last Friday) that relies less on passing the ball to Willem Alberts at every available opportunity. Perhaps the Botes/Daniel voodoo will be broken in this game. 😎

  • @Pokkel (Comment 4) : my thoughts entirely, our set pieces will be non functional:( all they have to do is get a line out in our half and maul it all the way up to the try line. And then if this was not bad enough I see a Joubert that is not named Andre on the bench πŸ˜₯ I love the Sharks more than anything but I think I’m not watching this one! I think ill go to church instead. The Stormers will really have to be kak to lose this one!

  • Looks like Plum will need to deviate from his forwards driven game plan to get over the advantage line. Botes/Daniel/Skeate wont get you over the gainline…and Coetzee never passes so they will isolate him. So looks like the backs will have to win the game. If they dont come to the party it could get ugly!

  • You know ever so often you spot a special player who might well be playing against your school. A couple of years ago I spotted a lad who was that special,a humble down to earth hulk called Terra Mthembu who put fear into all would be tacklers. While a physical beast,he also had a running game worthy of most centres. So today as a Border boy 1st and foremost I’d like to congratulate a Border schoolboy rugby legend and hopefully future Sharks legend on a Super Rugby debut come Saturday. Gilibenye Terra

  • Well all we have to do is give our support, cause for now I am worried about our light loose trio. Would have liked to see Du Toit getting a chance here. Also would have had McLeod start and Jordaan ahead of Ludik. Pity we lose Whitehead to injury.

    Go Sharks.

  • 😈 Well if we are to play “Sharks” rugby this is a good team and it will force us to play as a team. (Be careful what you wish for.) We should adapt to the breakdown rule, stop the pick and drives and contest the ball on the ground should the Stormers go to ground. The focus is to offload and create space for your mate.
If the lineouts fuction well we have nothing to fear. Sack before the drive starts! You can seldom defend the (obstuctive)drive anyway without losing yards or get penalised.
I look forward to see Tera, Jordaan and Joubert comming off the Bench. (Hope Joubert has climatised to the pace by now.) 😈

I’d have preferred PSD at 7 and Marcell at 8 with Botes but at least our backrow is balanced now.

We have a fetcher in Botes, a basher in Marcell and Keegan Daniel (note no S Ice  ) can play link in his best position.

Having a lighter pack isn’t a bad thing, it just means that we must play a faster style of rugby and run the heavier Stormers pack off their feet! Wish we’d included Sbura on the bench instead of Marius πŸ™„ We need him and Jordaan to counter the Stormers lightning back three!

  • @KILLER SHARK (Comment 13) : I’m desperate for Sharks rugby! The Sharks, when we’re playing well, (and most top teams) have the offload as a feature of their game and run opposition defences ragged.

Going to ground with the ball, especially considering the breakdown laws these days, should always be second choice behind keeping the ball alive and offloading!!

Terra was captain yeDale ngalanyaka and also star player and the Grey gameplan revolved around Siya,he was the star player and both were 8thman,must’ve been a titanic battle, was a close game though,Dale lost through a last minute try, think the score was 21-18. Terra matriculated at Dale in 2009. @Puma,thanks,Terra’s my favourite Dalian player ever,he was a pleasure to watch

For seasons now we have seen that Botes and Keegan do not work on the same field, Joubert showed all last year that is past it even in the warm ups he was below par, yet he is in the team:( I would have prefered to be bold start Terra in a rotational with Keegan, although I would have preferred more bulk in SDT. At the moment I see 2010 staring att me 4 losses in a row us making excuses for the team and missing the play offs

Except that the loosies are a bit light. But mind you, Koster and Kolisi are not exactly monsters now are they? Its just Duane that SLIGHTLY tips the scales in the Stormers favor in this department.

  • IMO … If Charl played @ 9, I would’ve favored our halfback pairing to win the battle quite comfortably, provided we get ball. With Freddie playing, the playing field just got much more level between the two teams.
12/13… Might be interesting…. We’v got two big and quite quick guys running there for us. Stormers have Jean and Juan… Can’t call this one.

Back three… Stormers will win that contest easily! Jordaan should’ve been backed, and handed a starting spot.

  • I’m gonna be positive, yes i hate that the Loose trio is soo light and that is my biggest concern; but let us hope we have in form Bissie back and that we can use our 1.9m over 100kg centres to get us over the advantage line…we can’t expect Coetzee to do everything. If we can stay within 5 points until 60 minutes we will win; cos i back the fitness and obviously the speed or the lineup…the more open it gets the better for this team.

If we could Win this one somehow, it would surely create some great momentum going into the home games and tour, aswell as Alberts and Whitehead hopefully available next week for selection, will also give the squad some lift and there will be more competition for starting places.

C’mon Sharks i believe it can be done…play Sharks rugby on saturday!!

  • @Megatron,I actually remember before I became a blogger, everyone was like I wonder if Mega’s cousin is as good as Mega says he is or is he being overhyped and I was thinking to myself boy oh boy is Sbura gonna show them and he made an emphatic statement with that try against the Cheetahs last year. Am glad he justified you punting him all that time, albeit at CC level, have faith he’ll step up in SR as well

  • @Ludz (Comment 79) : TBH i never punted him, i try not do it…i know there’s an inherent bias and inevitably i always end up being his biggest critic, like last year when his defence was a little shaky i was the first to pick on it and highlight. i back him though.

  • These few games without Alberts ,Deysel and Beast should serve sharks rugby well. We now have to develop a game not based on these big forwards, good.

  • I would have looked at Bresler at 7 and have this Du Toit kid on the bench. Good for Mtembu, player management wise that was the right thing to do Plum.

  • Chuffed for Herbst and Mthembu (both of whom I rate highly), but concerned about our light 5 and Ludik at 14.

I’m hoping for the best, but I think the Stormers will take this.

  • With several capable kickers in our backline we better not miss any attempts at goal.

  • Stormers will undoubtedly be the favourites. But that always suites us. Doesn’t it?

  • Would have started with Mcleod at 9 and Jordaan at 14 otherwise, good team. Happy for Botes, Herbst and Bosman. Don’t think the result should be the only measure of success. We should look at our game plan, metres gained, skills, sharpness, high temp error free game, tackles completed etc as these are the qualties that will determine if we will play in the knock out games. Season is too long to be going mad if we loose our first two away games…besides, there are teams that have lost their 1st few games and still won the competition just like we’ve won our first five games playing crap rugby mind you then crumbled. Victory is important but in the first few games I reckon the quality of your game is more important as it determines the season you are going to have. Increase the quality of your game and execute your game plan accurately the victories will sort themselves out. Once the victories come, you reset the bar and go for the kill.

  • I’ve been thinking about posting here more often but I think I’ll get kicked off because I get very the moer in when the Sharks lose. Come Monday’s after a loss I’m usually suggesting firing the coach, captain, half the players, Brian Van Zyl, even the ice-cream vendors! Luckily I’ve mostly calmed down by Wednesday.
