Sharks coach John Plumtree has wasted little time in getting Willem Alberts straight back into the starting line-up.

In a bit of a surprise (to me anyway) Plumtree has stayed with the same starting front-row as last week leaving Jannie Du Plessis on the bench yet again. In fact the only change to the starting forwards is Willem Alberts coming in for Jaques Botes who drops to the bench dropping Tera Mthembu down to the Sharks XV, but we already knew that.

In the backs there are a couple of changes with Meyer Bosman and Louis Ludik losing their spots in the Starting XV. The halfback combination of Michalak Lambie is given another run. Meyer Bosman drops to the bench and Tim Whitehead starts at inside center partnering JP Pietersen outside him. The fit again Odwa Ndungane comes in for Louis Ludik on the wing who drops out of the match 22 completely, with Lwazi Mvovo and Riaan Viljoen rounding out the back three.

The bench has a four three split with McLeod, Bosman and Jordaan covering the backs. The forward cover sees only one change as already mentioned with Botes coming in for Mthembu.

The Sharks

1. Dale Chadwick
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Wiehahn Herbst
4. Steven Sykes
5. Ross Skeate
6. Marcell Coetzee
7. Willem Alberts
8. Keegan Daniel (Capt.)
9. Frederic Michalak
10. Patrick Lambie
11. Lwazi Mvovo
12. Tim Whitehead
13. JP. Pietersen
14. Odwa Ndungane
15. Riaan Viljoen

16. Craig Burden
17. Jannie du Plessis
18. Anton Bresler
19. Jacques Botes
20. Charl McLeod
21. Meyer Bosman
22. Paul Jordaan

  • Excellent news! Bosman played well last week but Tim needs a chance to prove himself.

Expect Butch to target Lambie in this game. Butch will either get sent off for his classic no arms tackles,go off injured of go off after 60 mins puffing and panting!

Good luck chaps right behind you!

  • Wow!! Insane loose trio!! Me Like!!!

Only change i personally would have made would be to give Jordaan the 14 jersey; but his time will come.

    Go Sharks!!! Make it Happen!!!

  • @slammerboy (Comment 2) : Personally, i think Whitehead was The Sharks’ best player in the first game against Bulls…he was all over the place and had a very positive influence on attack. Glad he is at 12 again…i also feel he linked up better with JPP than Bosman did…Bosman skip passes way too often sometimes.

  • Much better loose trio, while Alberts’ return will also help make up for our lighter than normal T5.

With 2 good ball carriers in the loose trio, I hope this equates to better attacking ball for the likes of JP and Mvovo.

No complaints regarding the backs either – we don’t have anyone experienced enough at SR level to push Odwa.

  • Wonder if a swop between Daniel and Coetzee could be good..otherwise I am happy! And stoked, coz I do not see a “Joubert” in the 22!!

    Welcome back Willem!

  • Not very happy with Fred getting another go at 9, I think his service is to slow and he trows too many wayward passes. But the rest of the team looks awesome.

  • Not sure about Marcell at 6, would’ve thought Keegan at 6 and Marcell at 8 would’ve been a safer bet?

Nonetheless, once again I have to applaud the new, ballsy Plumtree’s bravery and willingness to explore outside the box.

  • @Ice (Comment 15) : @Culling Song (Comment 17) : Even if Keegan was at 6 and Coetzee at 8 we would see them swop positions in the scrum depending on the area of the field, etc. Happened a few times during the Stormers game…Def. scrum Coetzee was packing down at 8 in the 2nd half if i remember correctly.

  • Great team. Only one issue. Marcell should be at 8 and Daniel at 6.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 17) : Why does it matter what number they have on their back ?

Butch at 12 imo to add another kicking aspect to their game . Think they know what Durbs is like at this time of year ,so they’ll opt to keep ball in hand and play a more aerial type game.

  • Yep good team selection from Plum, going to be a cracker of a game and cant wait for it. Really going to need to front up physically and muscle up defensively. The Hurricanes game showed that the Lions like to attack and are vulnerable on the counter attack so will be good if we make the most of inevitable opportunities in that regard.

Also glad to see that Plum has opted for Jordaan on the bench instead of Joubert, that would have been the conservative route.

  • I actually like the look of the loose trio . Keegan like a firing pin behind some large cannons 😆

Also puts some weight behind our front rows legs.

  • @Talent (Comment 20) : I agree that the number is irrelevant, provided their roles have been clearly communicated to them.

  • Decent looking team. I am a bit surprised not to see Botes in at 6 though, he played quite well there last week. Hopefully we won’t get blown to pieces at the breakdowns. Again.

HUH??? So are they going to keep it in hand or play a more aerial type game? Aren’t those two different things?

  • @Talent (Comment 20) : Agree, they all in the same trio, doesn’t matter what number is on the back.

People must just take some time to think…the number on your back doesn’t mean you can’t play another position during the game.

  • Will the real Jannie please stand up, please stand up… Great to see the Bone Collector back in the mix, and a welcome return to Odwa and Tim… Jacques Botes and Meyer Bosman both playing good rugby, sure to add some value upon entering the game… Ludik; feel for him, but has no edge to his game, he is a Fullback, and needs to jam some good footy to unseat Viljoen; who could just become a Shark Tank favourite. Sharks will take this game.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 25) : Meant to say they’ll play more aerial game . I really thought Bos would have kept his jersey, maybe why they chose butch at 12 ?

  • Really happy about the selections – especially the loose trio. We need a solid game from the forwards in order to unleash the backline. I hope Plum considers this Michalak’s last chance to push for a starting spot. He needs to ride the wood if he fails to pitch up for this one.

  • With Alberts’ return, about the only spot I am really worried about is our front row.

Who would’ve thought a Shark would ever say that?

  • @Talent (Comment 30) : Butch is gonna backfire badly for them, Whitehead should be able to beat Butch’s attempts to tackle him with ease…Whitehead simply has to change direction and he will beat Butch or win us a penalty thanks to a nice swinging arm from Butch 🙂

  • Our tight 5 needs to come to the party in a big way. The lions will target Alberts for turnover ball so he will need guys on his shoulder. On 60min we will see McCloed and Bosman at 9 & 10 with Lambie to 15- that seems to be the trend this season.

  • Good team, I had said we will need to start thinking about playing Coetzee at 6. Keegan offers so much at 8 and is so much more of a modern day 8 than the majority of our loose forwards. 7 is well covered. The Lions broke our winning streak it’s only fair their break our losing streak.

  • This is brilliant news.

Okay I probably would`ve started McLeod and left Fred on the bench, he covers so many options, but other than that I`m happy.

Now if only Bismarck can cut down on those penalties . . .

@war1 (Comment 24) : I`m worried about that as well. Would definately start Botes ahead of Keegan and keep Marcell.

  • Best team thus far, I would like to see Burder get game time thought….Jordaan to slot in at 12-I want to make a very very roekelose statement….but I reaaly feel that we need a scrumhalf, I played a bit with challas at varsity…and I can see the same old habits coming back now…my choice is Reinach at 9…fred/lambie at 10 or Prinsloo/Lambie at 15(ludik’s game is not on par) I would also like to see Prinsloo rotate with other youngsters on the bench, in my opinion Prinsloo is the next rolls royes-give him a run my Plum!!!

  • Great to have Alberts back. Also good to see Whitehead getting another start, he played well against the Bulls. Odwa is always solid, so have no problems with him starting, though in time would like to see Jordaan getting a start. Would have liked to see McLeod starting this week. Though giving the players more game time together is not a bad thing either.

Go Sharks. Just hope the weather clears up for Saturdays game.

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 41) : I thought Riaan Viljoen did a good job at the back considering it’s his first two games in Sharks colours. Would like to see him rotate with Odwa or Gouws as you’ve mentioned.

Ludik’s a bit of head-scratcher though. There’s no flash to his game but he’s a hard worker and always dependable. Solid without being spectacular. Put him on the bench ahead of Oupa Marius any day of the week in my opinion.
