As we look at the game ahead, The Sharks will surely go into the match with their fins sticking out the water, after a very good second half performance against the Reds beating them 27-22 in Durban last week

After two close losses in the opening rounds of the competition against the Bulls 18-13 and the Stormers 15-12 the Sharks had a good bonus point win against the Lions 32-20 and a 27-22 win against the Reds last week.

Even though there’s still much improvement to be done it seems the Sharks are finding their rhythm and we can only hope it will continue this week against the Tahs.

Looking at results over the last few seasons its been very close games, with a bonus point being the only joy for the Sharks in the last three.

I reckon the Sharks need to take control from the word go, and everybody needs to bring their A game for a good result.

Average score: Waratahs 29 Sharks 19

Last five results 28 May 2011 Waratahs v Sharks 21-26 Durban

I’ve missed all the hipe about the ‘great comeback game’ but watched it 1 O’clock this morning, IMO the sharks had the upper hand in the full 80 min of last weeks game. even with 17-0 down we looked the better team….

  • @Franshark (Comment 9) : No ways man. The first thirty minutes up until we scored were horrendous. Leaky defence, and no penetration. The first time we scored was the first time we looked fluid in the whole game. Was like someone flicked a switch.

  • @klempie (Comment 11) : for the first 10 min we did all the play, on the stroke of 10 min all of a sudden they scored from nowhere with a great bakline move, after that they scored again and the penalty but still I felt they did not overwelm us, yes I knew the result so did not feel the panick of a loss coming so that may influence my ‘feeling’ about it….

  • Need to work on the defensive positioning – pillars were really bad.

Kick-offs were poor and we never competed at lineouts – disappointing from our locks.

I really hope JP is back next week – Whitehead (leaving aside the unfortunate defensive error) is a quality player, but doesn’t ask questions on attack the way JP does.

  • Chadwick is a huge liability for us on defence…even last week, the tackles chadwick misses leads to tries, because he doesn’t even slow down the attacker, he just somehow gets blown over…Chadwick’s play is honestly making me dislike him, cos it really isn’t that hard to tackle properly and catch the ball.

Having JPP back will be good for us, Sykes has to start next week…and why was Herbst on the bench…clearly wasn’t fit, i’ve never seen him get scrummed until today. Joubert can’t make an impact off the bench…so WTH is he on the bench and not jordaan??!!

Once again a game The Sharks had control of and should’ve won, but end up losing…

Deysel in the team will also help…our defence allows them to run at us…it’s only Sykes and Deysel that actually push onto the defender which is what we should be doing a lot more, we let the Tahs get go forward too easily in that 2nd half. Why did we take off Willem?? We take off Willem and they Bring on 2 Timani’s…how the hell are we gonna compete physically up front.

And bresler was terrible taking the kickoffs, he can’t use the sun as an excuse, cos Mumm did a great job for the Tahs looking into the same sun.

Chadwick was extremely poor in loose play .
MJ rush defence created a jagged defence ,Chadwick missed a tackle ,try in corner.
Don’t understand what was going through the coaching staffs heads when they put Coetzee at lock ,that could have cost us the game .Penalty at scrum ,1 jumper at line out…the hell.
Back 3 looked dangerous ,Keegan made some bold calls that paid off for us .

Why did he take Meyer off? Joubert is so slow it’s funny, his decision making is shit, Ludik had an overlap and he didn’t pass the ball to him. They a young team well coached by Jake. So not really sure what to expect from them. Just know we have to win that one, because Canes are playing far better than most thought, so a win there could be tough. By the time we get to play the Blues they might have all their players back as well. So not sure if we can pick up a win in NZ. Brumbies is a MUST win now.

Damn we just might have left Oz with two wins under our belt.

Come on Sharks we can do it. Deysel might be there next week too. Taking Alberts off we really do need a like for like replacement. So really hope Deysel is over there next week. Need JPP to start as well with Bosman on the bench and not Marius.

How can we be calm about performances like this? There is a problem in the camp, it’s not injuries! We lack the edge, we see some of it once or twice a season.

We got our fair share of ball but just couldn’t shift it properly. Not having a go at MJ but don’t think he’s the answer for us. My opinion anyway. Watch out for the Brumbies rush defence next week. It will be harder when we get to NZ. Not sure if we will pick up a win there. Canes are playing far better than we thought and the Blues could have all their players back by the time we play them.

We have just made it harder for ourselves now. Don’t rate the Tahs this year. We should have beaten them today. Need to up our defence like we had against the Bulls and Stormers.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 299) : Jordaan should’ve been on the bench…perfect guy to have if you looking to score a try…they only choose Joubert this week, because he played well for Sharks XV last week…Jordaan didn’t get any good ball because Joubert never passes and just bashes it up…don’t think it was fair on Jordaan…hopefully he is back on the bench this weekend.

Joubert must go play 12 for XV, again….Williams was a real weak link in a very good Sharks XV backline last night.

  • This loss has a lot to do with jet leg imo. The guys got tired in the second half. Fantastic effort, proud of the team but still disappointed at the loss.

Where’s the evidence of that in senior rugby, please? Must have missed the clip somewhere… πŸ™‚

  • @vanmartin (Comment 299) : Thought Tim’s first choice position was 13 though not sure. He can play both outside and inside centre.

I liked JPP at outside centre and hope he can be ready next week.

Bosman was really good today. So if JPP is back we are covered at inside centre with probably Whitehead starting and Bosman on the bench. We need Jordaan to cover JPP on the bench and not Marius.

Hope Deysel is over there next week too and hope he can be on the bench to cover Alberts.

  • if you’re going to blame someone here, blame Plumtree for picking a half fit Sykes and an unfit Herbst on the bench.

Completely WASTED the opportunity to bring a loosehead along to cover for Dale and then completely bottled it at the last minute by not even using Schonert.

You have to question the people making the off-field decisions here.

  • @war1 (Comment 302) : With the jet lag, we were playing at a frenetic pace in the heat. That can sap the energy right out of the players. Still though we should have won this game.

  • Bressler is turning out to be a let down, think this level is too much for him. There’s no aggression whatsoever from him. Not sure if he’s paying attention to what other SA locks are doing. Bring PSDT! Saw a bit of him play last week. Not bad.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 309) : you don’t think there’s a bit of a difference in intensity between Vodacom Cup and Super Rugby?

PSDT couldn’t dominate the WP Vodacom locks, but now suddenly he’s better than Bresler? Did you watch the Reds game? Bresler was immense.

  • @Puma (Comment 300) : that’s my issue, this isn’t a good tahs we lost to today and the other games are going to be harder. Fear is that we might go home winles.

  • Of course you can blame certain players for the loss.

People must just start to understand that one mistake, bad judgement can cost you the game.

So if a player gets a brain fart its not the teams fault.

  • @Honey Badger (Comment 315) : Yes, it wasn’t the teams fault we lost, certain individuals made bad dicisions and Chadwick, well we know all he can do is scrum…i’m just tired seeing him knock the ball 50% of the time he gets passed it, and also missing a large amount of his tackle attempts quite badly.

I also blame Plum for selecting a not 100% fit Herbst on the bench, he also should’ve started making subs around 50 minutes…everyone started getting tired around then…it’s like Plum forgot the players had to deal with Jet Lag or something…they were always gonna tire after 50 minutes.

  • @robdylan (Comment 310) : That would have involved dominating “Eldstert”! Very difficult thing to do. Was more impressed with the hunger PSDT showed which I think our young locks have not showed this year.

  • @robdylan (Comment 318) : Surely Jordaan canΒ΄t be worse than Joubert and will at least learn a thing or two, which could benefit Sharks rugby in the future. Joubert is a has been, who ads nothing now, and is very unlikely to ad anything in the future.

  • Let’s just be honest here. Neither Chadwick, Bresler nor Herbst are Super rugby material. Perhaps they may be one day, but for now, they are not.

  • @robdylan (Comment 318) : So am i understanding u correctly….u would rather have the slow has been with 0% x-factor over a young, fast and future Sharks star, come off the bench?

Im pretty sure most people would much rather prefer Jordaan coming off the bench; Joubert is just slowing down Jordaan’s development…and what has Joubert contributed to The SHarks since his arrival? Jordaan is still learning, but i would rather have a young x-factor guy that is learning, than an old over the hill guy that can’t really give much coming off the bench.

  • @siorc (Comment 320) : I agree with Chadwick, simply because his overall game is really bad for a loosehead prop.

Don’t agree with Bresler and Herbst…they are really good players…can’t judge them just on what they did today…Bresler has had some great games, but some average-poor…he just needs some consistentcy, and Herbst is one of the best tighthead props when it comes to the scrum, in South Africa.

  • Just watched the game again, Marais had the best seat in the house. Seemed totally disinterested, we were as good as playing with 7 forwards. Would love to see his stats.. Surely, PSDT can do a much better job.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 323) : Ja, i noticed that too…We have Deysel back, so chances that we see Marais in Starting XV in this superugby season, again will be rare.

Sykes and Bresler will probably be our locks next, Deysel and Alberts to be back up for the lock positions for the rest of the tour. I think Marais will drop out of the 22 next week.
