According to the Sharks website this morning, the team came through Saturday’s Sydney encounter mostly unscathed and should have a full squad available for this weekend’s crunch encounter with the Brumbies in Canberra.

Jean Deysel has been confirmed as on his way and it turns out that he actually departed for Sydney yesterday, so should arrive shortly – if he hasn’t already landed. Pat Lambie, who took a knee to the face against the Tahs, will need to see a dentist to have x-rays on an injured tooth, but is otherwise expected to play, even if he never quite manages to smile the same way again!

JP Pietersen continues to recover from his hamstring injury and will need to pass a late fitness test before being included for this weekend’s clash, while both Wiehahn Herbst and Jannie du Plessis should be able to play as well.

With all players fit, the Sharks now have their full compliment of 26 players in the tour party. The selection for the Brumbies game will comprise 22 of the following 26 players:

Dale Chadwick, Jannie du Plessis, Wiehahn Herbst, Nick Schonert, Bismarck du Plessis, Craig Burden, Steven Sykes, Anton Bresler, Jandre Marais, Keegan Daniel, Jacques Botes, Willem Alberts, Jean Deysel, Marcell Coetzee, Charl McLeod, Fred Michalak, Patrick Lambie, Meyer Bosman, Tim Whitehead, JP Pietersen, Marius Joubert, Paul Jordaan, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, Riaan Viljoen, Louis Ludik

  • I would consider a 5/2 split on the bench for this game, with a full front row on the bench.

    The guys need a break..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : I was thinking 5/2 as well, but more to get both Deysel and Botes into the side.

Your thinking makes more sense, though, except we don’t have another loosehead

I thought Schonert can cover both sides? That is the reason he went over?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : I doubt Plum will select either him or Jordaan for the game. He seems to prefer the injured and the retarded than backing young talent.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Herbst has been going at loosehead in traning a few times…so we might see him there. Although i believe Schonert is the best loosehead option other than Chadwick with the current props on tour.

I’m very positive this weekend is going to get The Sharks firing properly for the rest of the campaign…i think we gonna dominate the Brumbies…i’m confident, if The Sharks were available to me on Last Man Standing i would’ve selected them for this week.

  • @JJR (Comment 11) : Agree with most of the team except:

    5. Marais
    7. Deysel (if he is going over this week)
    8. Alberts (I’ll drop Keegan until he stops believing miracle passes work)
    12. Whitehead (let him attack in the first 60 and then bring on Bosman who was our best defender against the Tahs).
    13. Jordaan

    21. Bosman
    22. Sbu Sithole (I’m dying for him to get his crack at Superrugby – but he does need to be flown over)

  • @JJR (Comment 11) :

I like your team, just that there is no lock cover, which I assume you will take either Marcell or Alberts to lock after 60 minutes to bring on Deysel? But anyway..

I really likes Bosman/Whitehead as a combination, and I’d hate to break that up if JPP is not fully recovered. If JPP is touch and go, but is able to play the match, rather run him on the wing in place of Odwa.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) : Dell can… makes the decision to pick Schonert that much stranger. He’s great as tighthead cover, but now we don’t need tighthead cover.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 13) : I just put the team i think Plum will select, not neccesarily the exact one i would pick, Deysel was confirmed Friday evening already by the commentators for The Sharks XV game and now The Sharks’ website. Sithole won’t come over unless a back goes down, and even in that case i think if someone like Ludik went down Sharks would bring Janro Van Niekerk over.

@Richard Ferguson (Comment 14) : Just naming the team i think Plum will select. Deysel and Alberts can cover 4…Coetzee can’t be used as lock…106kg, doesn’t matter how strong you are it is not gonna help the Props go forward. We saw what happened to our scrum when Coetzee went to lock, although i also believe Herbst wasn’t 100% fit, he got scrummed badly.

Would like to see JPP on the wing so we can accomodate everyone; but Whitehead defends poorly from 13, and JPP has done great on defence from there, and he rushes onto defenders which is what we hardly saw from The Sharks on the weekend…i hate it when i see The Sharks allow the opposition to run onto them.

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) :

We were never going to need tighthead cover after this game, and then didn’t even need it during the game..

    Very strange decision!

  • @robdylan (Comment 15) : Yup, it’s Plum going for experience over what we actually need from the player…even when selecting from 2 youngsters. Dell should’ve gone over, and his workrate is great, if he had to get a chance at 1, and be able to handle the scrummaging well enough, he would be selected over Chadwick, IMO.

  • @JJR (Comment 16) : In that case, I agree with you and have to say that it’s a sad state of affairs that Plum would rather have players cover positions not their own rather than trust a young up-and-coming player.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 19) : All i know is i want Bissie, Sykes, Deysel, Alberts and Coetzee in our match day 22 every week if possible(Regarding the forwards)…Plum probably feels the same…so some position specific players might miss out.

  • @JJR (Comment 20) : To be honest, Deysel has been out for so long (I know he came back toward the end of last year but then dropped again) that I have almost forgotten what a good player he is when he’s on form.

Marcell Coetzee has really stepped up and to be honest, I’d include his name in there as a player I want in my 22 for every game. If any player had to make way at the moment for Deysel, for me it would be Daniel.

I think his game has really been affected by the captaincy and would rather have him on the bench for an impact late in the game and start with a loose trio like Deysel, Coetzee and Alberts. They can really soften up the opposition and then let Keegan run them ragged when he comes on.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 21) : Agree, i actually hope Deysel can be groomed to become The Sharks captain. Deysel is 100% fit now, last year he came back from his op. and was still limping, probably reason why he ended up at lock…he is running freely now and put in some really big hits on the weekend, and told guys like Marcel Van der Merwe to get off…we will see Deysel back to his best soon.

Can’t believe the cheetahs are not making use of Marcel Van Der Merwe…if he was at The Sharks he would probably be in the number 1 jersey right now.

  • Ndungane out to the stands. Viljoen on the wing and Ludik to fullback (I would rather have Viljoen at wing than Ludik). If JPP is fit, then him at 14 and Riaan at 15.
I would leave Bosman and Tim mid-ship but sub Tim with Jordaan after 50min.

    Sykes and Bresler to start.

Keegan will obviously have to be there with Marcell and Willem. Don’t think I will opt for Deysel on the bench yet, unless Willem is given a complete rest. Rather Nick, Wiehan and Craig on the bench with Marais and Botes.

Ze Frog and Jordaan on the bench.

  • I see our beloved coach are going to have a tough decision to make in the not-to-distant future. This decision will intake the composition of the loose forwards as soon as all are fit for selection. I wonder if our chosen captain will pick himself if everone is fit. Coetzee, Deysel, Alberts, Botes, Kankowski, Mtembu and Daniel?

  • @shade (Comment 31) : thanks Shade… I wasn’t aware that Nick had played 1. Than again, that was back at school, so some adjustment would be needed.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d be bloody thrilled if Plum gave him a run there. Anything to give Dale a bit of a rest.
