JP Nel in surprise Lions switch?

In a move likely to rise the hackles of many a supporter, the Lions are reportedly trying to secure the services of former Bulls centre JP Nel to help alleviate their midfield injury crisis.

Pieter Jordaan, writing for Beeld, suggests this morning that the 78-times-capped former Bull has recently returned from Japan, with his contract there recently having ended. Nel, who publicly quit the Bulls and SA rugby a few years back, claiming he couldn’t get a fair deal from a disciplinary process that always took his shocking record into account each time he was handed a sentence for one of his trademark illegal hits, is back in the country ahead of the finalisation of a move to France. With a huge number of midfield injuries in the camp, Lions coach John Mitchell is understood to have made some enquiries as to Nel’s availability on a short-term basis.

Nel has played no Super Rugby since 2009, when a cynical tackle on Stefan Terblanche saw him cop a 4-week band that effectively ended his chances of participating in that year’s semi-final and final, against the Crusaders and the Chiefs respectively. It’s probably safe to say that most fans of teams other than the Bulls were pretty keen to see the back of him and it will be interesting, if this does come off, to see how willing Lions supporters are to forgive his prior transgression, in light of their current centre injury problems.

  • With both Butch and Nel the Lions will be playing with 13 men! Might as well cut your losses and start the game with 14 men at least you not paying salaries 😯

  • I remember him crying about how he couldn’t get a fair deal, dude landed more punches than the tackle count of each team.
