Craig Burden has been named to start at hooker for the Sharks against the Hurricanes on Friday, with Bismarck du Plessis, carrying an injury niggle after 6 full games in a row, benching in New Plymouth.

Odwa Ndungane (who has flown home due to a groin injury) and Pat Lambie (ongoing dental problem) are both missing from the side this week, with Fred Michalak continuing at flyhalf and Louis Ludik coming into the side at right wing.

A late call will be taken as to who will fill the number 22 jersey this week, with Marius Joubert and Paul Jordaan bracketed in that position.

The Sharks are otherwise unchanged and will look to build on victory against the Brumbies last week.

  • I guess this is where I pray for Joubert to drop a dumbell on his toe.

@JJR (Comment 1) : If Joubert plays in the dry, he’ll probably leak four tries. If he plays in the wet only 2.

  • Can never underestimate the Canes at home but I think we’ll be alright. Will be good to see Deysel in action again and Bissie will benefit from a full rest, sure. Well be good to give Jordaan a run. #canethecanes going to start trending on twitter?

  • Weather forecast looks good…so hope to see Jordaan in 22…especially as we have seen how turnover tries saved our bacon last week, Jordaan would be a lot better guy to have on turnover ball than Joubert, i would think. Joubert would look for contact, whereas sevens star Jordaan would look for space. 🙂

  • @MikeN (Comment 6) : Canes team isn’t bad 4 sure…Forwards are fast; but not what i would call powerful…we need to target the set piece, and maul them to pieces.

  • Too bad that Lambie is not ready 😥 But i hope Plum backs Jordaan on the bench. We may need his innovation at the end of the game.

  • Don’t know why Plum continues to start Michalak ahead of Bosman? Nothing against the frenchman but has Bosman not done enough already to merit a start at flyhalf?

  • I’m gutted that Lambie isn’t starting. I would have loved to see him against Barrit.

What exactly is wrong with Lambie? Do you know Rob?
Did he have dental surgery? Why can he still not play?

    Advantage Hurricanes I’m afraid.

  • Need big games from Jannie ,Sykes and our two flanks ;they are gona have to pick up their game now with Bis out …

Backline will be fine ,michalak can have nightmares on attack but he is sound on defence.
Sykes and Jannie need to lead that tight 5 by example!!

  • @Pokkel (Comment 14) : @Talent (Comment 15) : Hurricanes pack is fast not powerful, we will take them up front comfortably…the challenge will be at the breakdown, because they have 2 open side flankers in their pack. 🙂

  • @JJR (Comment 18) : All the more reason to start with MB in my opinion. At least he can successfully pilfer the odd ball every now and then.

  • @Ice (Comment 11) : Really psyched that Burden is getting a start, but at the same time I’m pissed that it is due to Bismarck carrying a niggle, and not a case of the coach showing faith in his understudy 😥

I know that Lousi Ludik has been copping some flak on other threads, but in the absence of Odwa I think it’s a good selection. He may not have the pace and elusiveness one would want of a wing, but he is dependable, and a solid defender, and against the ‘Canes defense is going to have to be watertight. I know Paul Jordaan is supposed to be this x-factor player, but he still has to demonstrate that consistently at Super Rugby level. There’s also some question marks over the Bushmaster’s defense.

Having said that, I hope that Plum is willing to take the gamble and rather have Jordaan than Joubert on the bench. Jordaan may not have set the world alight yet, but he has potential, and time on his side. Joubert is on the wrong side of the age curve, and offers… er… what is it that he offers again?

  • We have to look after Bissie as this tourney is still a long way to go.

Really was hoping to see Lambie start. What exactly is wrong that he can’t play? What kind of dental injury keeps a player out for so long? Could it be more than just a dental injury?

    Hope Jordaan makes the bench.

  • Worrying news regarding Lambie. Would have preferred Bosman at 10, personally. Also think Jordaan should bench – starting Ludik on wing is already a very conservative selection.

  • Ludik has heart, to bad that doesn’t help you in a footrace. Admire his commitment though.

  • good to see Bismarck not being rushed back and I’m sure Craig will be playing well. The other fetchers need to step up though because Bismarck was really great in turnover ball, this is not Craig’s forte. He is more magic with the ball already won in hand.
