Whitehead, Coetzee in doubt

The Sharks website has this morning confirmed that centre Tim Whitehead and flank Marcell Coetzee are both in doubt ahead of Friday’s clash with the Blues in Auckland.

Coetzee, who has played a big role so far this season, went off clutching an injured shoulder during last week’s loss to the Hurricanes and coach John Plumtree has indicated that a call will need to be made during the week as to whether he can play against the Blues. With the Sharks boasting additional loose forward cover in Jacques Botes and Jean Deysel, there should be enough depth within the tour squad to offset the loss of Coetzee.

Whitehead, who is struggling with a groin injury, was the best of the Sharks backs by some margin against the Hurricanes and it would be a blow indeed were he to be ruled out of the final tour match, which is shaping up as one of the defining ones of the Sharks’ season. The former Stormers man appeared to break the line virtually at will against the Hurricanes and Plumtree’s backline will lose a fair bit of attacking edge should he be ruled out.

According to the coach, Whitehead will be managed during the week, so may yet play. In some good news, both Pat Lambie and Bismarck du Plessis are expected to be fit to start in Auckland.

  • Whitehead is a huge blow, and Coetzee…we have great guys to replace him, but don’t think anyone can has a workrate as high as Coetzee. Shoulder injury….hmmm didn’t Alberts also hurt his shoulder by being over played last season?

Coetzee has been managed like crap, a guy who makes that amount of tackles and that amount of carries needs rest… at least it means Deysel can hopefully get a start, he was really good off the bench last week, and if Whitehead is out hopefully it means we will need to have the similar flair and explosiveness of Jordaan in the 22, or even on the starting right wing if Plum wishes to add that x-factor.

  • Hope Whitehead can play. He is the unsung hero in our backline.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 2) : he’s not unsung here… we’ve rated him as the best in virtually every game he’s played!

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Agree, i’ve very much liked everything he has done at 12…he’s not so good at 13 for some reason.

  • Did you guys see Deysel bounce Lam twice within about 30 seconds…funny seeing Lam go down in a huge amount of pain after the second one 😆 The Deysel that was The Sharks’ best player is back people!! 🙂

  • These are both big blows. Not what we need at the moment. I suppose we just need to hope that these are niggles and not long term injuries.

  • Cant wait for Deysel to be part of the starting 15 again. I reckon the Sharks will be losing either Alberts, Deysel and Coetzee. Its time to determine which of those to lose. The reality is that the above mentioned are all really good ball carriers, but they cover same posiition/role in the team. They are too good to be on the bench for any union.

  • @Ozbok (Comment 7) : What u on about, we not going to lose any of them…it is all about rotation, and Deysel can cover lock, Alberts can cover lock and 8th man and Coetzee covers the whole loose trio…don’t see any reason why anyone of those 3 would want to leave. To be a championship side you need a championship squad, and that means having some top class players sitting on the bench from time to time.

Teams akways have to have at least 3 big ball carriers, because they are always most likely to get injured before nayone else does.

Crusaders have All Blacks on their bench, why can’t we have Boks on ours? Starting lineups don’t win you tournaments, a Squad does. Sharks made Deysel, Alberts and Coetzee. Coetzee came through Sharks ranks, Deysel was given a opportunity the Lions didn’t give him and Alberts became a Bok shortly after he joined The Sharks.

The last thing The Sharks need is suggestions that we can’t have all of Alberts, Deysel and Coetzee getting good gametime in the same side…ever heard of rotation? I’m fuming to be honest 👿 That comment of urs wasn’t well thought out…

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Needs to add a bit more bulk to him, Rob. Perhaps a bit too slight for an inside centre. But I’ve really enjoyed the positivity he has, his support play and his reliable defense.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 11) : He has gained 5kg since he joined The Sharks…hopefully he can gain a couple more, but not over 100kg, i don’t think that will work in his favour, he is a explosive player just like Mvovo, too much extra weight will just slow them down, they will gain strength, but they will most def.lose some of that explosive power/strength which works so well for them. IMO 🙂 But then again, many guys can gain a lot of muscle mass without it impacting speed, depends on the individual and his genetics.

For backs you want BMI’s of around 28 and for forwards you would want BMI’s around 30-32.

  • Can’t understand the big issue. Bosman can replace Whitehead if necessary. He is also in a excellent form, and when he played 3 weeks ago, he did very good. I’d like to see him next to Whitehead.

  • @springbok (Comment 13) : U seen Bosman’s defence Stats recently, the last game he attempted 8 tackles and made 3…that’s shocking.

  • @JJR (Comment 14) : I agree that is woeful defending and it’s a curse that hasn’t gone away from last year. A real pity cos Bosman has been showing some good attacking skills this year,

  • @JJR (Comment 9) : Relax bud, the point Im making is that they are way too good to be warming the bench. Look at the quality of the other loosies in the other teams. We are really fortunate to have such talented loosies. Why would you want to play lock if you are a flank??? I would want to play flank if im a flank. By playing a flank at lock is not rotation thats pressure from the player so the coach makes a compramise!!! Ok so we will be down a loosie or two during the international season, it still doesnt mean that its ideal. The bottom line is that the sharks have really good loosies. By playing them at lock and by not giving them starts will only last so long. They will be getting so many offers! Look at bismark du plessis while he was on the bench and being rotated with Smit. There were always rumnours of Bismark leaving! Im sure that there were some truth to all of that!

“Sharks made Deysel, Alberts and Coetzee.” Thats a load of crap! A union doesnt make a player!!! Try and apply that to your life… Thats not how it works.

  • Damnit – saw Marcell clutching his shoulder after the game still…perhaps a rest will do him good. He has put heart and soul into 7 performances, no one can last the way he is having a go each game.

  • @Ozbok (Comment 16) : When Bulls won superugby titles they had Flip and Rossouw on the bench a lot…why can’t we ROTATE our players well that they all stay fresh and injury free, and can have a consistent positive impact on the Sharks teams performances?

Which of our top 3 loosies which is Coetzee, Alberts and Deysel have been warming the bench? Deysel has just come back from injury so it makes sense…i’m sure Alberts would like to rotate with Deysel, because i’m sure he doesn’t want to go for another shoulder op. because he is forced to play every game.

Sharks used to have 4 springbok props…they all got enough gametime…rotation is so important these days, so a strong squad is key…look if Grant gets injured for Stormers…Francis comes in, huge difference in quality there, for Sharks Alberts needs a rest and Deysel comes in…a squad is needed. Players love to be on the field; but they also do not enjoy being played into the ground and having to sit out training sessions every week.

  • @Ice (Comment 17) : Once a ball carrier has hit 6 pretty much full games of starting super rugby in a row, then u know injury is a possibility…just look at the history of Deysel and Alberts and their injuries…@Ozbok 😉 Rotation and a squad not a starting 15 🙂

  • Two of our best players and both are producing each week. Pity to lose any of them really.

With Marcell we will be covered with Deysel and Botes. Would be a huge pity to lose Whitehead right now. That would mean JPP will have to stay at 13 with Bosman coming in at 12. Really hope that Jordaan is on the bench then. Damn that means we have to go with Ludick AGAIN at wing, he really was not up to it last week I thought.

Really pleased to read that Lambie and Bissie will start this week. Lambie has been missed big time.

  • @Ozbok (Comment 7) : I doubt we will lose them. I am with JJR here, in a tourney as long as S15 we need to be rotating players to keep them fresh and from picking up injuries, especially our big ball carriers.

JJR is correct, a champion team needs a champion squad. We need like for like players that are starting and on the bench. Unless you change your game plan.
