Only in Australia…

Breaking news from across the Indian Ocean today is that the Force’s head coach, Richard Graham, will replace Ewan McKenzie at the helm of the Reds next season.

McKenzie is apparently being lined up for a less hands-on “director of something” type role with the Reds, with rumours also suggesting that he’s next-in-line to coach the Wallabies after Robbie Deans steps down. Graham, who has failed to do much with the perennially-shafted Force, seems to have been rewarded for this mediocrity by being handed the reigns of Australia’s best-performing team. I guess the lack of quality depth in Australian rugby doesn’t only extend to playing personnel…

Then again, perhaps failing to deliver results as head coach of the Force is not really a career death sentence after all – it hardly stopped John Mitchell from being appointed as head coach of the Lions. Now what was that saying about frying pans and fires (or the one about pots and kettles)?

Meanwhile, we still find the Aussies clinging on to a single top-6 spot through the Brumbies, with their next-best sides tied in 9th and 10th spots on the overall log. It would be interesting indeed to see the log after this weekend’s games, assuming the Bulls manage to beat the Brumbies and knock them out of the top 6. That would mean a guaranteed 3rd-place on the log for a team that, in terms of log points alone, wouldn’t even qualify for a wild-card play-off place after more than half of the competition has elapsed.
